Egcovoid Using Egcovoid is a safe and secure way of ensuring that the required void is always achieved. The void size is determined by the grade of product that is used (see Product Range). The introduction of water into Egcovoid at a clearly defi ned point in time ensures that the product structure collapses, thus creating the designed void. Any applied loading from the underlying substrate is relieved and all loads are transferred into the piled foundations, etc. Contents Potential applications Handling instructions Product range References Installation Guidelines Technologies for the construction industry 3
Egcovoid Separation of new and existing structures Sound decoupling of new and existing structures Targeted load application Separation of concrete elements from sheet-pile walls Load transfer into piled foundations Avoiding the transfer of loads into underground structures Vibration decoupling of machine foundations 4
Potential applications Load transfer into piled foundations To ensure the transfer of all imposed building loads into piled foundations, the void created between the foundation slab and the ground using Egcovoid ensures the desired result. In the presence of soils prone to moderate swelling (40mm maximum) the use of Egcovoid ensures that these unpredictable movements, which could cause damage to the foundation slab and/or the entire building structure is avoided. For all other swelling soils and to create voids of up to 200 mm plus, the use of Pecavoid is recommended. Avoiding the transfer of loads into underground structures In order to protect existing underground structures (e.g. tunnels, drainage channels, etc.) from any superimposed loads from new structures, a void can be created using Egcovoid. By this means, the old and new structures are statically separated. Sound decoupling of new and existing structures To ensure an acoustic separation of a new wall from an existing wall, a void can be generated using Egcovoid. After watering of the void former, an air gap is created. In contrast to lost formwork with perimeter insulation, acoustic bridges and static interference can be ruled out when using void formers. Separation of concrete elements from sheet-pile walls Using Egcovoid ensures that a void (vertical gap) is maintained between a sheet-pile wall and the newly built structure. Any potential extraneous loads are thus prevented from acting on the newly built structure. Separation of new and existing structures For new structures, it is often a requirement that no new loads should be transferred to any existing structure. Gaps created using Egcovoid ensure a static separation of both old and new constructions and targeted load application onto the existing columns. Targeted load application When redeveloping old structures it is often required to increase column sizes to support the additional superimposed loads onto existing foundations. In order to ensure that the bearing surface is not increased, Egcovoid can be used to achieve targeted static separation of the foundation soil from the additional superimposed loads. Vibration decoupling of machine foundations Machinery and plant often generate high levels of vibration, which can be transferred to the entire building if no means of separation is incorporated. By using Egcovoid as vertical shuttering (lost formwork), the creation of a void is easily achieved. By separating the building structure from the plant/machinery, any transfer of vibrations is minimal. Technologies for the construction industry 5
Handling instructions Easy and fast processing on the construction site Egcovoid elements can be easily and quickly laid. A pre-prepared schematic setting-out plan will always ensure a smooth and successful installation process. Cutting the individual elements to size or incorporating holes, e.g. for drilled piles, can be easily realised by simple means, such as a jigsaw or a hand-held circular saw. Subsequently, all cut edges must be sealed using a special Egcovoid sealing and repair tape in order to prevent ingress of water at the installation stage and prior to the planned time for water injection into the slabs. Installation of additional valves for special cut shapes, allows for hose connection between the individual Egcovoid elements. After all of the elements have been correctly installed, all of the elements are connected to the main watering hose. A maximum of 17 m² (for 50 mm thick elements) or a maximum of 23 m² (for 35 mm thick elements) to be jointly connected to one hose system. After concreting and after the concrete has achieved the desired compressive strength, the void is then achieved by injecting water in the prescribed quantities into the slabs through the hose system. 6

EVSPL035KW: with moisture protection and integral hose system Dimensions: 2,400 x 1,200 mm Maximum permissible load for dry slabs: 150 kn/m² Void size after watering of Egcovoid: 25 mm Sealing and repair tape Tape (Art. No. EVKB120) for repair of damaged elements, sealing cut edges, sealing edges of incorporated holes and for securing and sealing of adjacent elements together. Hose Hose (Art. No YFXPSETZS), for connecting the individual void formers with each other and for supply of water into the hose system in the elements. Valves T-shape valves (Art. No. FXVENTILT) and L-shape valves (Art. No. FXVENTILL) for secure connection of all Egcovoid hose lines. Couplers Couplers (Art. No. FXKUPPLU) for safe connection of the Egcovoid hose to the water supply line. Technologies for the construction industry 7
References Vibration decoupling of a spectators stand in St. Pauli, Hamburg, DE Egcovoid was used in order to protect a new spectators stand located above an existing underground railway line from vibrations. Void formers were used as lost formwork and were installed between the existing underground railway and the foundation slab of the spectators stand. The load-bearing foundations were installed at a suffi cient distance from the source of the vibrations thus ensuring that any transference of vibrations into the newly built structure is largely eliminated. Authorised dealer: Building company: Behrens + Lüneburger, Hamburg WALTER HELLMICH GmbH, Dinslaken German Pension Fund Administration Building, Würzburg, DE A new service and administration centre to accommodate 150 employees of the German Pension Fund in Northern Bavaria has been built on Äußere Bayreuther Straße in Würzburg. In order to avoid any loads acting upon the roof of the underground car park and to achieve load transfer into the columns of the underground car park, Egcovoid with moisture protection and integral hose system was used. At a defi ned point in time the void was created by injection of appropriate quantities of water into the Egcovoid. Authorised dealer: Building company: Kropfelder GmbH & Co. KG, Bamberg Firmengruppe Göbel, Würzburg 8
References Party wall separation for a new logistics centre at Hagenholz, CH In order to achieve static and acoustic separation of the walls of a new building from an existing party wall, a planned space of 50 mm was generated using Egcovoid. The grouped sections of Egcovoid were enclosed in an additional layer of a PE fi lm in order to allow for separate water injection and subsequent removal of sections with a height of 5 m and a width of 1.2 m. Authorised dealer: Building company: Egco AG, 3178 Bösingen, Schweiz Marti AG Bauunternehmung, 8050 Zürich, Schweiz Redevelopment of the former abattoir/ livestock centre, Karlsruhe, DE A historic drain composed of brick-built vaults passes through the middle of Karlsruhe and is currently used as sewer channel. Within the scope of the development of the former abattoir area, a new concrete road crossing was built above the vault; the requirement was therefore to prevent the transfer of building work loads and traffi c loads from the new construction into the historic structure. This separation of structures is guaranteed by the use of Egcovoid with moisture protection and integral hose system. At a defi ned point in time the void was created by injection of appropriate quantities of water into the Egcovoid. 10 Installation Guidelines Ø 10 mm to p to p mm ~23 m2 50 mm ~17 m H2O 35 mm >10 min/plate 50 mm >15 min/plate! x This Installation Guideline is exclusively regarded as a recommendation and does not replace any expert knowledge required for installation. The instructions are always state of the art and are constantly updated. It may be necessary to alter these recommendations, as more information becomes available. The currently updated and valid version is available from our homepage at In addition, our General Terms and Conditions shall apply. 10 w w w. m a x f r a n k. c o m
Installation Guidelines 1 Bearing surfaces must be kept level and free from surface water and impurities (levelling layer made of sand). 2 Lay Egcovoid on the prepared ground or install with an accurate fi t into the shuttering, adjusting for local conditions. Egcovoid can be cut by means of conventional site tools (e.g. jigsaw). The cutting edge must be sealed off using FRANK EVKB120 sealing and repair tape to achieve water tightness. The valves are installed by the customer using a drill and a 10 mm drill bit. To do this, drill a hole at any point of the circumferential edge and affi x the valve. 3 Install Egcovoid without gaps. Connect them into a row with hose sections, valves and couplers (with the 35 mm-thick plate up to approx. 23 m² and with the 50 mm-thick plate up to approx. 17 m²). Large gaps/faulty spots should be closed with polyurethane foam or sand. Any damage to the void former must be sealed off using FRANK EVKB120 repair tape. A connecting hose should lead outwards from each row. 4 Before covering the void formers with a minimum 50 mm layer of clean/protective concrete, a PE fi lm must be installed onto the void formers. Prevent the fi lm and the void former from being damaged. Egcovoid can withstand a maximum loading of 150 kn/m² in the as-built condition. 5 Concreting: Lay the lower and upper reinforcement layers of the slab onto the layer of clean/protective concrete. Take account of the size of the resulting void in sizing the concrete element! 6 After the design compressive strength of the concrete has been achieved, water is injected via the connecting hoses of the Egcovoid. Watering should fi rst take place for 10 minutes with low pressure (approx. 2 bar); after a reaction time of approx. 30 minutes, watering can be continued with increased pressure. Depending on the thickness of the plate, Egcovoid must be watered with approx. 15 to 25 litres of water per m² (e.g. volumetric measurement of the water volume using buckets). Note: The smaller the surface to be watered and the smaller the number of valves, the lower the water pressure, which is to be selected for watering. Descriptions and technical data sheets for Egcovoid are available for download on our website at / Products / Building acoustics / Void formers Egcovoid Images of the performance of Egcovoid in laboratory experiments: after short-term watering at low pressure and a reaction time of 30 minutes after 2 hours and watering at 15 l/m ² after 24 hours the load-bearing capacity of Egcovoid is eliminated Technologies for the construction industry 11
