Masters (Part-Time): If you are an experienced professional and want to accelerate your career, develop skills and insights to complement existing strengths. Masters Degrees for non-business Graduates: We have a range of Masters degrees that are suitable for non-business graduates. 11 MSc Business Courses One year full-time or two years part-time* These courses are designed to help you acquire a strong understanding of business processes and procedures and to develop the skills necessary for a career in your chosen area of business. Many of these courses are also suitable for non-business graduates. Refer to the eligibility chart on pg. 8 for more information. Semester 1 (30 credits), Semester 2 (30 credits) and the Summer Term (30 credits). Each semester you will complete a number of core and option modules and in most cases you will be required to complete a research project and/or modules in the summer term. *Part-time With the exception of ibusiness and Project Management, MSc Business parttime classes are held during the working day. Part-time students will have approximately 6 hours of class per week - either two 3 hour or three 2 hour sessions each week during term, which can take place during the hours of 9am- 5pm. If you are in full-time employment, employer support is usually essential to undertake an MSc Business on a part-time basis. See page 36 for information on evening, weekend and other part-time options. Entry Requirements You will need one of the following: A minimum second-class honours or equivalent GPA in a business degree or area related to the MSc specialisation you choose (See eligibility chart pg 8) or An honours Higher Diploma in Business Studies or A primary degree with a minimum of three years relevant work experience. 12 MSc in ibusiness One year full-time or two years part-time (part-time classes held 2 evenings per week) What is the course about? This course addresses technology-centric innovation; for graduates and business professionals seeking to become more adept managers in ICT initiatives, and for technologists seeking to become more effective business managers. The course takes a global perspective on interdisciplinary high-tech environments to develop analytical, teamwork and communication skills. Who is it for? Student backgrounds reflect the dual focus of this course coming from arts, business, economics, finance, accounting, law, sociology, sciences, computing, informatics, architecture and engineering. While having diverse professional backgrounds with varying levels of experience, students all share a deep interest and concern for innovation, technology and organisation. Where can I go? Graduates of the MSc in ibusiness are pursuing careers such as: Entrepreneurs in start-ups delivering or leveraging ICT solutions. Business analysis and consultancy in major firms like Accenture, KPMG, PwC and the public sector. ICT project management experts working with solutions providers in the service sector, manufacturing, banking, pharmaceutical, retail, export, NGO and public sector. ICT solution development in both SMEs and multinational technology companies like IBM, Google and Microsoft. Doctoral studies/ict research. The MIS (Management Information Systems) subject area also offers an MSc in Business Analytics (see pg. 31) which is a branch of applied mathematics that uses quantitative and computer techniques to optimise decision-making in business. The course is currently included in the Graduate Skills Conversion Programme, which is funded by the NDP for EU students. Please refer to our website for details. 13 MSc in Finance One year full-time or two years part-time (Part-time classes held during the working day) What is the course about? This course is designed to give you advanced specialist knowledge and a practical understanding of finance with research into the financial services industry. You will acquire the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as the skills required, for a career in the financial services industry - in investment banks, commercial banks, fund management, insurance companies, securitisation and trading houses and in the finance divisions of firms in other industries. An undergraduate degree in business, economics, finance or any degree with a significant quantitative element is ideal for this course. Students on the course have an opportunity to apply for a number of internship positions, allowing you to gain practical investment experience and draw valuable skills from industry professionals. Graduates of the MSc in Finance receive special recognition as a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) with the CFA Institute. This means that our course contains at least 70 percent of the CFA candidate body of knowledge, so you will benefit from a head start towards the internationally recognised CFA qualification. This is a challenging and interesting course; I gained a broad insight into global capital markets while also having the opportunity to focus on the specific areas of finance that interested me. Furthermore, in addition to the education and skills I learned in the lecture halls, I was fortunate to make many life-long friends with my class mates, which was an unexpected but hugely positive benefit. The effective management of human resources is recognised as a key element in an organisation s strategic capability. This course provides you with conceptual and practical insights into Human Resource Management. It reflects the changing character of the Irish, European and global context by emphasising the integration of knowledge and approaches in personnel management, industrial relations and the behavioural and human sciences. This course, which is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD)*, is ideal for students with an undergraduate degree in business, or in cognate areas such as: social science, psychology, economics, politics or law. Students can opt to pursue a professional pathway which is accredited by the CIPD or they can study for a joint masters, an MSc Business (HRM) and a European Masters in Labour Studies (EMLS). The MSc in HRM is awarded by UCD and the EMLS degree is awarded by the EMLS consortium of leading European research universities. Students participating in the EMLS programme spend a semester in one of our EMLS partner universities. For further details see * To qualify for membership of the CIPD students must complete specific modules that are accredited by the CIPD. Prizes Two awards are normally available to Human Resource Management students who demonstrate exceptional ability on the course. The Merc Partners bursary is awarded to the student who obtains the highest mark in the HRM stream. The Richard Maher Memorial Medal is awarded to the part-time student with the highest first-class honours mark. This course is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills and competencies required to operate in the global market place. On completing this course, you will be expected to be able to critically appraise the theory and practice of international business; and demonstrate your expertise and competence in meeting the challenges and opportunities (professional and personal) of international business. The MSc in International Business attracts many international students and their presence and contribution, along with the learning approach adopted, enhances the student learning experience. A small number of places are available to students to complete Semester 2 at a leading French business school. Where can I go? The course, formerly known as the MSc in Management and Organisation Studies, is about people, organisations and change. It is about working in, managing and developing organisations in an ever-more complex and demanding environment. The course utilises collaborative learning to think deeply about human behaviour and the theory and practices of change, strategy and organisational processes and to develop insight and skills to help organisations work better, and become better places to work in. The course is ideal for those who want to engage with groups and organisations in a range of settings, whether business, social or public sector, and those with an orientation towards management, human resources or consultancy. The course is suitable for students with an undergraduate degree in business, social science, psychology or related areas, or those with cognate workplace experience. Where can I go? This course provides you with first-hand knowledge of the tools and techniques used by successful consultants in the competitive management consulting industry. On completing the MSc in Management Consultancy you will have a detailed understanding of the consulting industry - how it works, its dominant players, key success factors and the management issues that drive it. You will also know how and when to use different consulting tools and methodologies, how to write a consulting proposal and other key skills needed to be a successful management consultant. It is ideal for students with an undergraduate degree in business, computer science, economics or law. As part of the course, students can complete a company internship over the summer term. Students work one-on-one with a client company to complete a consulting project and gain valuable work experience in the process. Where can I go? The course is focused on developing the marketing knowledge and skills that will enable you to operate at the highest level of management. The course develops the conceptual and practical skills needed to perform successfully in the marketplace and is ideal for students with an undergraduate degree in business, psychology, social science or related area. 19 MSc in Project Management One year full-time or two years part-time (Part-time classes held 2 evenings per week) What is the course about? This course will equip you with practical skills in planning, organising, control and leadership at the very highest level, within a framework informed by both academic learning and practical experience. It is suitable for graduates from all backgrounds and disciplines. This course prepares you for a career in project management. Real-life projects are used to reinforce your understanding and you will also be given the opportunity to carry out your own projects and experience the reality of achieving your goals using the tools and techniques acquired. The MSc in Strategic Management and Planning will equip you with the skills and techniques needed to succeed in strategic management such as: strategy, management, leadership, critical thinking, negotiations and decision-making techniques. You will develop and hone your understanding of the various activities involved in the formulation and implementation of strategic initiatives: evaluating a firm s external and internal environments, assessing and designing its planning and control systems, acquiring and allocating financial and non-financial resources and implementing strategic initiatives. Who is it for? This course is ideal for students with an undergraduate degree in business, economics or related areas, postgraduate business diplomas, or degrees with a significant proportion of business subjects.
