2 RWT and AIM in partnership The University of Wolverhampton s Academic Institute of Medicine (AIM) has been commissioned by The Royal Wolverhampton Trust (RWT) to deliver a high quality training programme for doctors seeking experiential service-based learning outside of the standard UK training programmes. The MSc Clinical Medicine As a Fellow on the programme, you can work towards attaining a Master s-level qualification through AIM. The course is focused on learning that occurs within Fellows professional practice. Your programme will be developed around individual, employer and sector needs, ensuring that learning is current, reflective and targeted. The intention is to enhance the reputation of The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust as a preferred place of work for such doctors thereby enabling the organisation to deliver effective and high quality care. AIM has designed a clinical medicine programme with the dual purpose to benefit the organisation and individual medical practitioner: Trusts can use the Master s as a tool to recruit and retain medical professionals. The programme enables trusts to work with a reputable university to conduct research, allowing the possibility to income-generate. For individuals, this offers a clear framework which supports CPD, recognition of prior learning and work-based learning. Individuals can understand and manage their career steps and aspirations better. You will identify projects and activities you engage with in daily practice, and use that learning experience for assessment. You, your manager and University course leader will co-construct the negotiated learning experience. There are three levels offered: Postgraduate Certificate Postgraduate Diploma Master s You can enter at any level and gradually build up your attainment using the suite of available Master s modules (along with other Level 7 modules available through the wider University framework), taking one or more relevant modules as you progress through your career and continuing professional development. It is a high expectation that Fellows progress onto Master s level (MSc Clinical Medicine). During the two years, subject to satisfactory progression, you would be expected to register for a Master s level qualification. AIM will fully support you through this process. You will have a named contact, and an induction; which will include an assessment of your learning needs set against your career progression objectives and a negotiated and tailored programme of Master s modules. Future prospects It is the intent of the clinical services and of the programme that, at the end of your posting, you will be fully prepared and highly competitive for the next stage of your career by virtue of your clinical experience, educational portfolio and higher qualification. Becoming a Fellow on an AIM programme We are aware from various official surveys that as many as 50% of doctors are deferring the next step in their training progression, and thinking of going out of programme. We understand the reasons why junior doctors may wish to do so. We agree that the pressure to progress up the training ladder isn t always in a trainee s best interest. Recognising this, RWT is offering a number of high quality posts. The AIM programme focuses on clinical experience (in a speciality of your choice), with the opportunity to sit college exams and gain Master s level qualifications within a high quality educational framework. The posts All posts in AIM s Clinical Medicine programme will be fully paid substantive posts within the NHS, with a very clear medical education framework including the opportunity for Master s level accreditation. Posts are available in general and acute medicine with a variety of other specialities. Posts are for one or two years, depending on experience, grade and preference. Posts are available in the majority of the specialities of internal medicine. Appointments are at a level equivalent to junior or senior NHS residents depending on the level of previous training.

3 Programme content and assessment Who is this programme for? The Clinical Medicine programme has five vocationally-focused academic strands: Clinical leadership and management Teaching and learning/ medical education Evidence-based practice Speciality Medical innovation and practice (overseas doctors) These will prepare you to become an effective professional in the workplace, develop and improve your existing skills and knowledge. Summative assessments will be based on: presenting evidence and attainment of agreed objectives and outcomes assignments work-based learning projects a research dissertation. The routes to MSc Clinical Medicine offer the opportunity to engage with key CPD, but also to extend skills and personal development through the strands of self-awareness, application and innovation within their organisational context, delivered by specialists from the Faculties of Social Sciences, and Education, Health and Wellbeing, together with clinical supervisors at RWT. Clinical role and experience Fellows will work with a team of consultants, specialist trainees, core trainees and Foundation Year trainees. Your precise role within this team will be dependent on the grade of appointment and the speciality chosen but would generally include ward-based activities, outpatient commitments and on-call emergency-hours working. There will be a full Trust and team induction and an in-built twoweek period as an observer. For candidates unfamiliar with the NHS or to working in the UK, formal training in language and communication skills can be made available during your initial period of appointment. Throughout your tenure, you will be supervised and guided by consultants who will provide clinical training during day-to-day working and more formally at supervised learning events and organised protected teaching sessions. Further clinical training will be provided during team educational meetings and multidisciplinary meetings. Flexibility to meet your career progression needs In all cases, the clinical role and experience will be matched to applicants and assessed at interview and through information submitted. The post can be tailored to meet your development needs including valuable front door acute/emergency medicine experience, general medical experience and speciality postings to complement your vision for your training in a balanced and reasonable mix. Standard tenure is for one year, but may be extended to two years by agreement. Learning agreements and governance All Fellows must agree an educational contract and the objectives of their programme. The Master s component will be in line with service objectives and support RWT strategic objectives/issues. Evidence of training will be retained within your individual portfolio and validated by the authorised senior clinical officers of the NHS origination as your training record. In each organisation there will be a named senior clinician who will be responsible for running the programme, ensuring the provision of a high quality experience, and the satisfactory progression of Fellows in attaining agreed outcomes. That officer will report to the Academy Steering Group and upward to the NHS Trust Board in order to ensure organisational accountability of the programme. The MSc Clinical Medicine programme is ideal for doctors at various stages of their career from the UK or abroad under the Medical Training Initiative (MTI) scheme. Examples include: 1. Doctors who have completed their basic medical degree (MBBS) and the Foundation Programme, or 18 months of post-registration overseas clinical experience post-qualification, for example, junior residents. 2. Doctors who have completed a recognised postgraduate qualification in General Medicine and are seeking further specialisation or qualification, for example, senior residents. 3. Doctors (established practitioners) who have attained specialist status in any of the medical specialities and seek further specific experience and research opportunities. UK equivalent NHS grades Junior resident: Foundation Year 2, core medical trainee Has MBBS and up to 3 years general medical experience. Seeking further general and acute medical experience. Seeking broad speciality experience. May wish to sit Royal College exams. May wish to attain a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Medicine. Senior resident: specialist registrar Has MBBS and greater than 3 years general medical experience. Seeking further general and acute medical experience. Has some speciality experience and is seeking greater exposure. May have a postgraduate medical qualification. May wish to sit Royal College exams. May wish to attain a Master s in their clinical medical speciality. Established practitioner: consultant Has substantial previous experience. Wishes to attain further sub specialization or specific skills. May wish to attain a Master s in their clinical medical sub-speciality.

4 Benefits of the Clinical Medicine programme Information for overseas applicants As a Fellow on one of AIM s clinical medicine programmes, you will benefit from: a named educational and clinical supervisor 4-monthly formal supervisor meetings access to an e-portfolio and appraisal record annual appraisal including 360-degree appraisal and a personal development plan access to internal and external study leave with a defined study leave budget exactly equivalent to the matched NHS training grade, with a lighter, less prescriptive and more pragmatic touch than standard training programmes training, leave and support to pursue college examinations and higher qualifications opportunity to actively participate in medical student teaching programme opportunity to undertake research and audit. Upon completing the programme, you will be able to demonstrate that you: have completed all requirements of the proposed training programme including documentation of attendance at the agreed internal and agreed external continuing medical education (CME) opportunities have engaged in clinical governance activity and evidence-based practice by giving multiple examples of such practice, undertaking at least one in-depth project to show this, which may relate to an audit cycle, risk assessment, incident reporting, critical event analysis, critical review of evidence, or topic dissertation around clinical cases have engaged in assessed and evaluated teaching activity as a teacher are a compassionate doctor assessed through portfolio by supervisors are maturing as a reflective practitioner assessed through portfolio by supervisors. We are offering overseas doctors a high quality, fully remunerated post providing clinical experience within the NHS under the visa regulations of the UK Medical Training Initiative, including a clearly defined medical education framework with the opportunity to attain Master s level accreditation. Overseas doctors will enter this programme under the UK Medical Training Initiative The MTI enables suitably qualified overseas postgraduate medical specialists to undertake a fixed period of paid employment to gain clinical experience and training in the UK before returning back to their own healthcare systems. To be eligible for applying on the MTI scheme, Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) examination is not required, although the International English Language Testing System (IELTS 7.0 and above) and 18 months of postqualification clinical experience are essential. Applications from overseas doctors Overseas doctors may make themselves known to us individually, or may be recruited by us through tripartite and formal relationships between the NHS, the University and their home medical organisations. Applicants must submit their outline application, a CV, and references (as per UK doctors). They must complete all steps required of the MTI scheme. If your application is successful, you will be introduced to our partner local NHS organisations. There may be a preliminary interview (usually by video conferencing). If mutual agreement is reached then the partner organisations will support the completion of further GMC, College and Visa requirements. This will lead to the offer of a substantive NHS post. The partner NHS organisation will agree to undertake all components of the defined education requirements of the Fellowship and to register Fellows for the University of Wolverhampton s AIM programme. The University will act by mutual agreement as the independent scrutinizer of the quality of that programme as well as providing Master s level qualifications.
