1 COURSE OBJECTIVE This course aims to introduce fundamental visual communication techniques and basic drawing techniques to communicate complex visual information, and places emphasis on the use of drawing process as a part of design process. COURSE DESCRIPTION The course aims at developing students capabilities of executing a broad range of architectural communication tasks, and introduces fundamental graphic communication techniques. It focuses on fundamental visualisation and graphic communication techniques and theory in order to introduce students to architectural drawing techniques. It involves studies on various representation techniques like orthographic and free-hand drawings besides computer aided drawing and modelling techniques to enable students to develop and present their design ideas in different mediums. It is important to appreciate the relationship between architectural communications techniques and design process, where drawing and model making are not considered only ways of representing the design ideas but also primary means of visual thinking. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to - to understand the basic design principles of graphic communication - to conceptualize visual and graphic expression - to produce two and three-dimensional architectural drawings and models through using orthographic, paraline, pictorial drawing and rendering techniques - to use graphic communication techniques - to produce quality work; accurate and neat drawings and models, correct line hierarchy, line quality and lettering - to organize a clear and coherent presentation - to use different techniques and media as a major part of the design process - be aware of the relationship between design and different means of architectural communication SYLLABUS The topics that will be covered this semester are: Introduction to drawing instruments & drawing materials & their use Basics of architectural drawing & abstraction Weblog design Architectural photography & Photo editing - Photoshop tutorial Freehand drawing & Sketching techniques Colour theory Collage & Relief Orthographic projection Shade & Shadow Paraline drawing techniques: Isometric Drawing & Axonometric Drawing Diagram & Expressive drawing techniques Model making & using model workshop Drawing complex geometries and relations in 3D Poster design W1 25 September 2013 Abstraction and basics of drawing Objective: Abstraction principles, line weight and line quality, depth of field, differentiation of light and textural properties with line. W9 20 November 2013 Orthographic Projection / Shade & shadow Objective: Producing a set of orthographic projections of the project studied in Basics of Design course (ARCH101) by applying shade and shadow to emphasise and develop design idea. W10 27 November 2013 Paraline drawing techniques: Axonometric - Isometric projections Objective: Producing the axonometric projection of the project studied in Basics of Design course (ARCH101). W11 04 December 2013 Paraline drawing techniques: Axonometric - Isometric projections (Mid-term assignment) Objective: Producing the axonometric projection of the project studied in Basics of Design course (ARCH101) by introducing shade & shadow W12 11 December 2013 Diagram / expressive drawing techniques Objective: Producing set of drawings and diagrams to express the main idea and relations discovered in ARCH 101 final assignment. W13 18 December 2013 Model making / model workshop Objective: Developing and trying different model making and detailing techniques that best refine the main idea and relations discovered in ARCH 101 final assignment. Using the model workshop. W14 25 December 2013 Model making / model workshop / presentation boards & posters Objective: Working on developing model making and detailing techniques and working on refining the final presentation boards. W15 31 December 2013 Final Submissions EVALUATION Students will be evaluated on the basis of the quality and process of the work, the completion of assignments, and contribution to the studio environment. For any graphic work, craftsmanship, precision, and accuracy will be taken into account for grading purposes. Attendance and Class Contribution: %10 Weekly assignments: %55 Midterm assignment: %15 Final assignment: %20
3 Late submission: Late submission will not be accepted unless it qualifies as excused. All submissions are due at the date and time indicated. Late assignments if otherwise accepted will be downgraded. Incomplete work is generally discouraged. Severe incompleteness will be evaluated based upon the degree of incompleteness. All assignments are due in completed form. GRADING SYSTEM For each course taken, the student is given one of the following grades by the course teacher. The letter grades, coefficients and percentage equivalents are given below. AA BA 3.5 BB 3.0 CB 2.5 CC DC 1.5 DD F 4.0 outstanding 2.0 average 1.0 unsatisfactory 0 fails to follow requirements of the assignment LANGUAGE Students are expected to develop both oral and written language skills in acquiring architectural terminology as well as daily communication in the studio. CLASS STANDARDS Studio Rules: Each student is expected to respect for each other and for the work environment at all times. Students are encouraged to work together in the studio during and outside of class time. Due Dates, Deadlines and Presentations: Assignments must be submitted and presentations should be performed on time. Sketchbooks: Each student should keep a sketchbook which s/he will use to take notes, make sketches, document daily observations etc. Documentation of Work: Students are required to keep all work during the semester, as they can be used in different exercises throughout the term. Moreover, students should photograph or scan the work produced in ARCH 101, ARCH 111 or ARCH 121 regularly to document and reflect their progress in their weblogs & portfolios. Weblog: You are obliged to document all the work you produce during the term in your weblogs. Each weblog is expected to be regularly updated so that they become your online diary and an interactive environment, where you share your personal experiences and progress in the first year of your architectural education. Detailed description of Weblog design and how you are expected to use this medium is going to be explained in the class. Equipment: Each student should bring all the necessary equipment and material required for the course and set up their desk for work before the class begins. COURSE MATERIALS Good quality equipment will serve better in the class and in further education. Additions to the following list of materials may be made during the course in which students will be given advance notice. Drawing notebook (Sketch book, min. 20 cm) Parallel Straightedge (at least 90 cm) 50x70/35x50 cartridge papers.
