Kapsch CarrierCom EN 3GPP Release 4 All-IP Voice Core Network for GSM-R. always one step ahead
The four key benefits of Kapsch CarrierCom s 3GPP Release 4 Core Network architecture are: 1Standards-compliant, carrier-grade, all-ip Voice Core solution The solution is based on Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA) supported by Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware. 2 Mature and field-proven software with full EIRENE service continuity As a leading provider of GSM-R, Kapsch CarrierCom has contributed to establishing technology standards in renowned standardization bodies such as the International Railway Union (UIC), the European Railway Agency and various technical committees. This includes the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) which recently published a new technical specification for Release 4 Core Network architecture. 3Network efficiency Our next-generation core network solution reduces operating expenses (OPEX) and capital expenditure (CAPEX) significantly, due to a simplified and flat network implementation. Accelerated installation and deployment By implementing our solution, railway operators can eliminate risks. Kapsch CarrierCom has demonstrated its expertise in a number of successful projects despite harsh climatic and geographic conditions. And by using open standard platforms and advanced SIP and IP services, our equipment can be adapted to future innovations. 4Foundation for further evolution The flexibility and adaptability of Kapsch CarrierCom s next-generation voice core solutions to technological evolutions, new advanced services, and its capability to integrate with future network architectures helps to preserve operators investments in the technology. With this in mind, Kapsch CarrierCom will continue to leverage IP-based technology with the introduction of SIP for railways between the Network Switching Subsystem (NSS) and the Fixed Terminal Subsystem (FTS) as defined by the Technical Specification The solution reduces total-cost-of-ownership as follows: Reduced site infrastructure The reduction of required space by more than 60% helps operators to install and operate their core network even within limited space. Reduced power consumption The solution consumes 40% less power compared with legacy switches. This enables railway operators to run a greener network and reduce OPEX substantially.
Kapsch CarrierCom s All-IP Voice Core Network for GSM-R. As the world s leading provider of GSM-R networks, Kapsch CarrierCom is moving with this trend and is currently introducing its next-generation voice network solution, based on the 3GPP Release 4 Bearer-Independent Core Network (BICN) standards. To provide flexibility for future evolution and innovative applications, we have chosen IP technology instead of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) for the Core Network. Kapsch CarrierCom s next-generation voice core solution is designed specifically to provide the critical mix of reliability, robustness and scalability that is essential in today s GSM-R industry. Over the past 10 years, railway operators around the world have migrated their mobile communications infrastructure to GSM-R. The system was first introduced in some of the largest public mobile network operators, and is now also being successfully deployed in major GSM-R networks across Europe and Africa. As mobile communications continue to evolve, many of these operators are now looking to upgrade their networks from legacy Time Division Multiplex (TDM) technology to a next-generation packet-based architecture. Success stories around the world Kapsch CarrierCom has expanded its customer base and its technology is now present in multiple markets around the world. Among the early adopters of 3GPP Release 4 Core Network architecture are the largest railway networks of Europe: Germany s Deutsche Bahn and the UK s Network Rail. Lithuania and Austria also rely on Kapsch CarrierCom s 3GPP Release 4 Core Network solution as well as Algeria, which is the very first African country to join in.
The 3GPP Release 4 Core Network Architecture. Kapsch CarrierCom s next-generation Voice Core solution is a state-of-the-art soft switching solution that complies with 3GPP Release Core Network architecture and fully supports Voice over IP (VoIP). bearer management function supported by the Media Gateway from the call control and signaling functions provided by the Call Server. This delivers higher flexibility to scale the network independently, enables geo-diversity and increases resiliency. The 3GPP Release 4 architecture also referred to as Bearer Independent Core Network (BICN) architecture, separates the CORE SCP MSC SERVER MGW HLR SGSN GGSN GPRS TECHNOLOGY FOR PACKET-ORIENTED DATA COMMUNICATION CORE APPLICATIONS RAILWAY PROVISIONING MANAGER VOICE RECORDING SYSTEM SMS - SC APPLICATIONS 2G 2.5G PROFESSIONAL SERVICES PROFESSIONAL SERVICES Superior redundancy and reliability With a complete set of enhanced redundancy features and capabilities, Kapsch CarrierCom s next-generation GSM-R solution delivers the levels of reliability and robustness that railway operators require for their safety-related applications and services. Geographical resiliency To complete high-level nodal redundancy, Kapsch CarrierCom offers a full geographical redundant core solution. Automatic switchover capabilities provide service continuity by moving traffic from one site to the other in case of disaster (for example, loss of a specific network element or loss of a complete site). Carrier grade robustness The solution leverages the ATCA standard to incorporate full hardware redundancy, fault-tolerant software architecture, and self-monitoring/self-healing features.
Kapsch CarrierCom s 3GPP Release 4 architecture at a glance. Kapsch CarrierCom s next-generation Voice Core solution is a further example of our commitment to delivering customizable communication solutions to the railway industry. The next-generation Core solution is fully integrated into Kapsch CarrierCom s end-to-end GSM-R portfolio, which offers all of the features and capabilities GSM-R users are looking for. We have already successfully deployed our solutions on major railway networks in Europe and Africa, and will continue to offer the best available GSM-R technology, architecture and platforms to our customers.
