1 Nokia Siemens Networks his 700 Integrated signaling application solutions Today s and the next generation networks use the Signaling System No. 7 (SS7) to exchange information within and between the networks. Engineered to provide peak performance and the highest reliability with a condensed hardware footprint, the future-proof Nokia Siemens Networks his 700 is the perfect solution for SS7 signaling implementations. Designed to deliver flexible SS7 signaling application solutions, its resilient design and superior capacity make his 700 the stand-alone Signaling Transfer Point (STP) of choice to covering critical areas of signaling, SMS control platform, EIR and number portability. The his 700 can handle all current and future TDM / IP fixed, mobile, cable, packet-oriented and intelligent network (IN) platforms as well as IP network signaling requirements. The efficient and costeffective way to run your network The Nokia Siemens Networks his 700 is a market leader and is deployed in over 100 live networks boasting a first-rate set of integrated signaling application solutions. There are four major application sets shown in the diagram to the right. Since the his 700 is deployed as a Signaling Overlay Network (SON), it is positioned in the heart of the network. All SS7 signaling traffic has to pass through the his 700 which utilizes its unique position to distribute, convert, steer, monitor and control all signaling traffic passing through the network. The integrated signaling applications allow Nokia Siemens Networks to provide flexible solutions which meet the specific needs of each of our operators. his 700 Signaling applications SMS applications Screen Route GW SIGTRAN Fraud prev. 2 SS7 signaling The Nokia Siemens Networks his 700 provides a powerful, reliable, versatile and scalable Stand-alone Signaling Transfer Point (SA-STP) for time division multiplex (TDM) networks and as a Stand-alone Multiprotocol Signaling Gateway (SG) for both carrier signaling access and the transition of TDM-based networks to IP-based Next Generation Networks. Network migration from legacy R99 to R4 or R5 with the his 700 is guaranteed to be smooth and easy. The main features and supported standards are: ANSI ITU Gateway BICC Bearer Independent Call Control Enhanced MTP and SCCP Load Sharing Gateway Screening (MTP and SCCP) GSM MAP Screening GTT Global Title Translation HSL High Speed Signaling Links M2PA MTP Level 2 peer to peer adaptation M3UA MTP3 User Adaptation Layer MRVT MTP Routing Verification Test Multiple SS7 Networks and Point Codes OMAP Operation and Maintenance Application Point SCTP Stream Control Transmission Protocol SS7 Accounting SUA SCCP User Adaptation TCAP Transaction Capabilities Virtual HLR and flexible IMSI addressing The accounting function provides detailed information on all MAP and CAP/INAP operations, which are recorded according to ITU-T and can be us for billing and reconciliation. The screening function ensures security in the signaling network by blocking specific combinations of parameters this feature protects against unauthorized use of MTP or SCCP relay facilities, thus blocking unnecessary signaling load on the network. The Load Sharing and Control function improves traffic distribution and increases the amount of destinations, thus eliminating SS7 Bandwidth limitations as well as providing overload protection towards SCCP destinations. The SS7 Routing function provides SCCP traffic partitioning and MTP International Carrier Routing, i.e. MTP incoming link set based routing. Routing tables can be tailored to the operators needs. Thus the SCCP traffic partitioning provides flexible SCCP routing for OPC/SCCP calling party address and SCCP called SSN, AC/OC. The Signaling Gateway (SG) in the his 700 provides for a smooth migration of services and features from the TDM network into the data network by offering SS7 signaling over IP. By using his 700 as signaling gateway, both legacy TDM and new IP equipment can seamlessly continue to operate over the scalable high bandwidth IP-based core network, instead of burdening the TDM-based legacy SS7 Network. The architecture is based on three components: Standard IP (IP V4 and IP V6) Transport protocol (SCTP) with support of SCTP bandwidth control A common signaling transport protocol, that supports a set of reliable transport functions for signaling transport Adaptation sub-layer protocols (M3UA, M2PA, SUA): Specific adaptation layer protocols that support specific primitives, such as management indications, required by a particular signaling application protocol (ISUP, INAP, CAP, MAP, SCCP) A Call Mediation Node (CMN) is a functional entity in the separated architecture of call control and transport. The CMN routes signaling messages (BICC) according the content of the signaling message in the control layer. The LUP Watch function monitors the location updates (LUP) process handled by proprietary steering products. The his 700 provides back-up default routing to ensure that connections are completed. Number policy registers The his 700 includes an integrated Number Portability and Policy (NP) Server and an integrated Equipment Identity Register (EIR). These functions optimize network resources because they are coupled together with other SS7 functions handled also by the his 700. Both Fixed and Mobile Number Portability are supported. The implementation of the Intelligent Network Application Part (INAP) as well as Mobile Application Part (MAP) and Camel Application Part (CAP) allow the his 700 to deal with various LNP and MNP network scenarios. In addition to these applications specific features like virtual HLR and flexible IMSI handling have been implemented to create OPEX savings for the operator. Flexible number handling, Trigger less NP method and Statistical data collection via NP ticket mechanism are all supported. This integrated solution results in minimal call establishment delays. Although the Nokia Siemens Networks his 700 is equipped with its own powerful internal DB, it is flexible and can be used as a data less application server querying an external DB for MNP and EIR data using e.g. LDAP, INAP and ENUM protocols. IS41 support allows a TDMA operator to access MNP information stored in a GSM network to migrate a specific subscriber(s) into the TDMA network and vice versa. The EIR function includes: IMEI Grey, Black, White list management, IMSI-IMEI management to lock certain subscribers to particular mobile equipments, IMSI management to exclude inbound roamers from the check_imei_request procedure, Statistical data and measurements collection via ticket mechanism for blocked (black), track (grey), allowed (white) and not match (unknown equipment) results. The Number Portability Server provides LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) and SIP (Session Initiated Protocol) interfaces to allow read only access to the data stored on the Number Portability (NP) database. 2

3 Global SS7 overlay network SMS security & fraud prevention his 700 Network his 700 monitoring EIR & number portability Management system Signaling transfer point SG signaling gateway SS7 over TDM Signaling over IP M3UA, M2PA, SUA SIP Diameter ENUM LDAP Softswitches TDM POTS/ISDN Mobile Circuit switched networks Classic IN/SCP Mobile IP/MPLS core Application servers Applications (LDAP) Subscriber DB (LDAP) DNS (ENUM) Charging server (Diameter) Next generation networks (R4, R5, VoIP, IMS, etc.) The ENUM Client Interface enables access to ENUM (Telephone number Mapping) DNS servers, i.e. where telephone numbers are mapped to internet addresses. This allows the operator to access a DNS server to find the location of an IP phone, i.e. IP Address. Network diagnostics utilities SS7 Monitoring is usually achieved by third party probes and monitoring equipment, which is very expensive both in terms of CAPEX (the initial equipment purchase) and OPEX (physical set up for each measurement). Flexible Monitoring is steered by SW engineering on the his 700, without the need for probes since the his 700 will duplicate and store the traffic of interest. Therefore it provides a cost-effective and integrated monitoring module thus eliminating the need for additional and expensive test equipment. The collected and stored SS7 Traffic (MSUs), is then available for further post-processing or call tracing applications. Additionally, this can be combined with other analysis tools such as Traffica and other probing mechanisms to provide flexible and real-time statistics. This feature is based on the MSU traffic duplication capabilities of the his 700. The Flexible Record Generation Application is available that categorizes the received MSUs according to provisioned filter criteria, e.g. all SMS traffic from a specified operator defines a record that basically contains the amount of MSUs received or sent over a given period in time, which fit the filter criteria. The information can then be used by post-processing or billing applications. The SS7 Accounting facilities are greatly increased as compared to SS7 Accounting defined in ITU-T, both in terms of amount of records and sets of filter criteria that can be defined. The record generation application can also more easily be fine-tuned to the operator s clearance and billing needs. 3

4 SMS support SMS Multi-Layer Screening and Routing provides the operator with a wide range of administrative, security and management tools to secure and improve the SMS business. Likewise it is instrumental in providing fraud prevention. SMS screening is realized by means of intelligent rule-base filtering and anti-spoofing/anti-faking measures, such as a location check with the HLR. SMS routing takes into account short code numbers, calling/ called number types (prepaid or postpaid) or any other number related feature. SPAM SMS messages can be blocked, saving network resources and increasing the user experience. SMS First Delivery Attempt allows the operator to off-load its SMSC resources by letting the STP execute the first SM delivery attempt. It is estimated that 70-80% of SM traffic can be delivered directly because the called subscriber is usually attached and available. Operator CAPEX and OPEX are reduced significantly and the user experience is improved due to faster SMS delivery. SMS Home Routing redirects MT SM traffic of outbound roamers to the home PLMN by interception the interrogation to the HLR. This puts the operator in the value chain for MT SM traffic and avoids direct delivery from other networks to subscribers roaming abroad. Thus preventing fraud and ensures that interconnection agreements are upheld. It also enables the operator to perform screening functions on the MT SM traffic even for their own outbound roamers. Technical data SON his 700 SMS content scanning & flood prevention feature enhances the SMS gateway security features. It expands SMS Gateway functionality by inspecting deeper into the packet; i.e. into the SMS content (text or binary format). In addition the SMS Gateway functionality is expanded not only by inspecting a single SMS, but by bringing the history into consideration enabled by a feedback statistics function. There are three scanning levels: Keyword Search, Digit String Threshold and Identical Message Thresholds. Administration terminals allow policies via GUI to be set for; pass or discard decisions, alarm and record (CDR) generation. MAP/SMPP Messaging Gateway application is able to transform IPoriginated SMS into GSM MAP (Mobile Application Part) SMS and vice versa. This feature provides a SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer Protocol) interface to and from a SS7 Network. SMS Charging Application provides the Operator with the capability to use the CAP charging method or perform SMS online charging via a Diameter interface towards the SCP. The SMS IMS charging gateway offers an interworking service to seamless offer a prepaid IMS charging service to legacy SS7 Networks. Call Data Records (CDR) can be generated for each of the SMS functions.
