1 Programme Specification Every taught course of study leading to a UAL award is required to have a Programme Specification. This summarises the course aims, learning outcomes, teaching, learning and assessment methods, and course structure. Programme Specifications are developed through course validation and are formally approved by UAL Validation Sub Committee (VSC). They are available to prospective students through the course web page, and must be reviewed on an annual basis to ensure currency of information (for example, following any modification or local developments). Awarding Body University of the Arts London (UAL) Teaching Institution London College of Fashion Final Award BA (Hons) Fashion Design Relevant QAA Benchmark Statement Art and Design Date of production/revision August 2016 Course Aims The aims of the degrees within the undergraduate credit rated framework identify the rationale underlying your educational experience, your own personal achievement from studying on the course and its effect upon your long term achievement and career. Within the context of the undergraduate credit rated framework, the aims of the course are to: enable you to participate and develop within higher education by offering a specialist part-time educational route. provide a challenging and stimulating educational experience, which will enable you to develop a range of vocational, personal, intellectual and transferable skills; enable you to acquire and develop a broad knowledge and critical understanding of the fashion industry and related processes through a multi-disciplinary approach to the subject; encourage intellectual and personal development and expertise in your chosen subject specialism; develop your abilities to respond to professional opportunities or to undertake further study. Course Outcomes. The outcomes that you will have demonstrated upon completion of the course, are: 1. an awareness of the relationship between fashion theory and the design process from both practical, theoretical and aesthetic perspectives; 1
2 2. a coherent and systematic knowledge of fashion in its aesthetic, commercial, theoretical and cultural context. a practical and theoretical awareness of the design process from concept to consumer; 4. the ability to articulate and communicate your ideas and design propositions through visual, verbal and written presentation methods to both industry and non-specialist audiences; knowledge of the underlying industry concepts and principles associated with the fashion industry; 5. an ability to evaluate and apply appropriate research methods that enable you to sustain a systematic investigation and/or apply problem solving skills using methods of analysis and enquiry appropriate to your specialist discipline; 6. an ability to situate practice within cultural and historical contexts and debates; 7. evidence of engagement with the Personal and Professional Development (PPD) principles as outlined in this document. Learning and Teaching Methods: The following learning and teaching methods are employed to support the integrated achievement of the course outcomes: Presentations, demonstration, interactive workshops, workshop practice, group projects and discussions, lectures, seminars, critiques, student centred learning supported through self-directed study, on-line learning and collaboration, using open access facilities and tutorials. Assessment Methods: The following assessment methods are employed to assess the achievement of learning outcomes in an integrated approach: Your ability to apply intellectual and academic skills will be assessed through written and practical assignments, presentations and reflection. You will engage in formative and summative assessment and peer assessment. Programme Summary Programme structures, features, units, credit and award requirements: In Stage 1 you are required to complete 1 at level 4 in order to progress to Stage 2. Introduction to Fashion Design, Fashion Media, Fashion Business Undergraduate Degrees (Part-time); Design Process to Product; Introduction to Cultural and Historical Studies; Understanding the Business of Fashion; Digital Catwalk; 40 credits In Stage 2 you are required to complete 1 of which a minimum of 100 must be at level 5. Cultural and Historical Studies Options; Fashion and Environment; Sustainable Skin; Creative Collaborative Project; Cut, Contour and Control; 40 credits In Stage you are required to complete 1 at level 6. Employability and Enterprise; Researching: Global Landscapes; 40 credits Final Major Project; 60 credits A 20-credit unit is approximately equivalent to 200 hours of learning time, which includes a mixture of taught time, independent study and assessment. All students are entitled to a tutorial package that consists of: one tutorial per stage for the duration for their course of study at LCF; group tutorials as required an appropriate level of confidentiality Distinctive features of the course: Distinctive features of the Programme The programme can be completed in four years of part time study and offers a flexible route into higher education for students from a diverse range of backgrounds who wish to develop undergraduate level knowledge and skills, or to upgrade their academic qualifications. You undertake common units of study that enable you to develop a broad
4 understanding of the fashion process in a commercial and cultural context. The programme directly relates to the areas of specialism currently delivered in full time courses within the undergraduate credit framework and as such is well resourced by specialist staff and a wide range of equipment. The final stage of the programme enables you to develop a highly individual outcome relevant to your future career and life aspirations. The integrated programme of PPD enables you to move progressively toward independent study and management of your own project. Distinctive Features of the Course This is the only part time Fashion Design degree course in the UAL and one of the only part time degrees in the UK that may be completed in 4 years The course is a route for students to engage in internships and potentially work full or part time whilst they are studying so that their exit profile and CV is strong. The course directly relates to the areas of specialism currently delivered in full time courses within the LCF undergraduate credit framework and as such is well resourced by specialist technical staff and a wide range of equipment. The course is unique in that it covers a broad range of fashion subjects and techniques (textiles, contour, tailoring, forecasting ) The final stage of the course enables development of an individual, career focussed outcome and there is a good record of career progression into the fashion industry by BA (Hons) Fashion Design graduates. The course has well-established links with a range of high profile brands which provide direct industry feedback and advice on the currency of the curriculum as well as networking opportunities. The College supports the course via, access to industry research (WGSN and Fashion Monitor or Mintel for example), project support, visiting speakers from industry and industry visits. Common cross discipline units include a highly commended co-creative Industry Collaborative Project which involves BA (Hons) students from Fashion Media, Fashion Visual Merchandising and Branding, Fashion Design and Fashion Business. This enables students to work on a live industry project which develops a broad understanding of the fashion process in a commercial and cultural context. The course is responding to the principles of widening participation and lifelong learning through the mode of delivery. 4
5 Recruitment and Admissions Admission Policy/Selection Criteria The course seeks to recruit students from a wide range of backgrounds. If you are likely to meet all the entry requirements, you may be invited for interview so that your suitability for the course can be assessed. The interview process will include portfolio review and an interview with members of the course team. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the course. The course seeks to recruit students who can demonstrate: visual awareness, graphic skills and sensitivity in the use of colour/texture, fashion awareness; an interest in fashion, cultural and social trends and the ability to engage in discussion; technical and design ability research skills and the ability to develop ideas; coherent and structured arguments and the ability to communicate their ideas; the ability to analyse and solve problems; the ability to work independently and as part of a team. This might, for example, be demonstrated by: related academic or work experience; the quality of the personal statement, a strong academic or other professional reference; or a combination of these factors. Entry Requirements Prospective students should: have minimum entry requirements of 2 Advanced Level passes at grade C or above supported by passes in subjects at GCSE grade C or above to include Maths and English or equivalent awards. This course requires a minimum 160 UCAS tariff points. have IELTS level 6.0 or equivalent if English is not the first language. Applications are welcome regardless of age, gender, race, class, sexuality, or religion. Consideration may be made towards applicants who have relevant work experience which can be shown to be equivalent to formal qualifications.
