This Programme specification provides a summary of the main features of the CIPD Diploma in HR Management course, the programme of study and the learning outcomes that a typical student might reasonably be expected to achieve and demonstrate if he/she passes the course. 2 COURSE AIMS The course aims to: Develop the skills needed for a career in Human Resources Management. Give an introduction to the Human Resources manager s role. Provide an awareness of human resources functions and the key issues that impact on HR issues. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of the course, learners will have developed: Knowledge and Understanding An awareness of the context of HR functions. An awareness of the key issues that impact on human resources issues. A platform for studies in Human Resources Management. Intellectual Skills a broader perspective of the organisational issues facing HR professionals. effective analytical and problem solving skills. Learners must demonstrate that they are able to: plan and administer resources. contribute to the interpretation of human resources information. Learners must also demonstrate that they understand and can explain: the corporate environment. factors affecting individual performance (eg systems, relationships, performance criteria, motivation and reward). performance management process and its rationale. employment relationships. roles in relation to human resources and development (ie training, personnel and line management). the concept of contribution to organisational success. REFERENCE POINTS Subject Benchmark Statements: Business Studies LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT Learning and Teaching Strategies Barking & Dagenham College is committed to widening participation into Higher Education and we provide a supportive learning environment for students from a range of backgrounds. In the early stages of the course there is an emphasis on identifying individual needs and providing additional support where required. You will be well supported by a well established virtual learning environment (e-campus). All teaching and assessment materials are available on-line. Your personal tutor is a member of the delivery team and there will be opportunities to set up tutorial meetings as required. Your progress will be recorded using a CIPD Student Progress Form and a CIPD Certificate of Achievement Record (CAR). Teaching and Learning Methods Your skills and understanding of processes will be developed through a planned series of assignments and practical skill based activities. You will participate in, and contribute to group work and group practical assignments. The underpinning knowledge and understanding of human resources will be developed through
4 formal teaching sessions and seminars. Work Experience Work experience is not part of the Diploma in HR Management programme, however the Curriculum Area has strong links with companies in the City of London and the local area and job/career opportunities are frequently brought to our attention. Visiting speakers A range of outside speakers with HR backgrounds will be incorporated into the delivery of the programme. Group visits Visits will be arranged to local CIPD Branch events (East London & Docklands Branch) and HRD Exhibitions. Assessment methods and strategies The standard of your work will be assessed through the completion of written and practical assignments which have been set by the CIPD. Each assignment will have clear learning outcomes and guidance on what you need to do to be successful. The achievement of learning outcomes will contribute to your success in one or more units of study. Once all learning outcomes have been completed your achievement will be recorded Students who achieve one unit will be eligible to claim a CIPD Award in HR Management, four core units plus two optional units will give students a CIPD Certificate in HR Management and students who complete all eight units will be awarded the CIPD Diploma in HR Management. Upon completion of the full CIPD Diploma in HR Management, students will be invited to attend Barking & Dagenham College s Higher Education Graduation Ceremony which is held in November. Destination and Progression When you successfully complete this programme you should have the skills, knowledge and experience to progress to the CIPD Advanced Diploma in HRM Level 7 or the CIPD accredited MA in HRM at a UK University. However, students may choose to enter the employment market and the CIPD Diploma in HR Management is recognised by all UK employers. She can also provide information and an access point to other specialist help. The College offers confidential health advice and checks. They also arrange visiting clinics including sexual health and contraception. Careers advisors and opportunity coaches offer individual appointments and can support you in your next steps whether to further study or employment Barking & Dagenham College Students Union the college employees a coordinator who provides continuity and advice to the SU Executive that run the student union for the students. There is also a Higher Education Student Union officer as well as an active HE Student Forum Financial Advice is provided by a team of advisors that help college students access the financial support they are entitled too. This is available through Advice Street Learning Support and Disability support is available to assist students with identified support needs. The college has an excellent track record of supporting students with a wide range of difficulties and disabilities. Learning Resources the college LRC areas are equipped with bookable PCs with standard software and internet access. The facilities are open until 7.15pm each week day. The Head of Higher Education provides a voice for higher education in the colleges management structure and he coordinates activities and events and ensures quality standards on programmes. Course Specific Resources The CIPD Diploma in HR Management is run at the main campus.
6 ADMISSION TO THE COURSE (See also the UCAS Entry Profile) Entry Requirements Applicants should be a minimum of 18 years. Have achieved the CIPD Diploma in HR Practice Level 3 Have experience working in an HR environment preferably at managerial level. Mature Applicants We are committed to improving access to education for those without formal qualifications. We will consider applicants who can show evidence of experiential learning that is equivalent to the required formal qualifications. If you have been out of education for a few years but have relevant vocational experience in business, marketing, human resources, law or finance, accreditation of prior experience will be considered as an alternative entry requirement. All candidates will be required to attend an interview where your ability to undertake the course will be assessed. METHODS OF EVALUATING AND IMPROVING QUALITY AND STANDARDS How we evaluate and improve standards of learning As a student of the college you are entitled to express your views on your course and the college in general. You will be asked to respond to at least two surveys each year that you are at the college. You will have the chance to air your views through an elected student representative at termly course meetings. Your representative may also attend a cross college HE Forum where your views on the college and any concerns will be discussed. The college has a comprehensive quality assurance programme that monitors all courses through course review, achievement of performance indicators and observation of teaching and learning. In this provision all project briefs and assignments are internally verified to ensure that all learning outcomes and grading criteria are met. This course is externally monitored by the CIPD s external examiners who advise on academic standards and ensure that all learning outcomes and assessment criteria have been met. The results for all students are ratified through two course boards and an eternally chaired end of year examination board. The CIPD, the awarding body assign an External Examiner to evaluate and quality assure this course. This course is also inspected by the Quality Assurance Agency.
