1 If you will be participating in the Geauga County Barn Quilt Trail your Barn Quilt design will need prior approval. Submit your proposed Barn Quilt design, a photo of the proposed location on your barn/business, your Barn Quilt Trail Application and the fee to Destination Geauga. Only 4x4 or 8x8 Barn Quilts may participate in the Geauga Barn Quilt Trail. This guide may be used to assist you in the production of your Barn Quilt. We assume no responsibility if these instructions do not produce the desired end product. There are many instruction guides online that may also be helpful to you or offer different ideas in designing, building, painting and installing your Barn Quilt. Quick Reference for Step by Step Guide 4x4 Barn Quilt: 4x4 Barn Quilts can be constructed and preassembled/framed and primed prior to drawing/painting your design on the board. 1. Create Design 2. Construct/Frame 3. Prime 4. Transfer Design to MDO Board 5. Paint Barn Quilt Design and Frame 6. Mount 8x8 Barn Quilt: It is recommended that 8X8 Barn Quilts be assembled/framed just prior to mounting due their size. Drawing, priming and painting the design will be done prior to assembly of the painted frame. If you choose to frame the Barn Quilt first follow the steps above for a 4x4. 1. Create Design 2. 2 Graphing Your Design on Paper 1. Determine the grid of your selected quilt block (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12 etc.) A 3 patch block has 3 blocks across and 3 blocks down and is referred to as a 3 block; a 16 patch block has 4 blocks across and 4 blocks down and is referred to as a 4 block. Note: in order for a pattern to have a center block it must have an uneven number of blocks (3, 5, 7, etc). Graph out your quilt block design on graph paper. To try different variations of colors make several copies. 3. Color in the blocks on your drawing and choose your final color scheme. Many quilt designs are geometric. Study the geometry of your design. Most traditional quilt patterns are geometric, with 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 squares on a side. This pattern has two squares on each side. The deep purple triangle is one-half of a square divided along the diagonal. The pink and green triangles are made by drawing the other diagonal through each square, but stopping when it hits the purple colored triangle. Various graph paper grids are provided in PDF for use in your design. Construction & Framing of Your Barn Quilt Tables or saw horses to support the Barn Quilt Sand Paper Screw gun/drill 2

3 5 drill bit (appropriate size for your eyebolts) Putty knife 4X4 Barn Quilt (1) 4x4 one sided exterior grade MDO Outdoor Sign Board. This board is sold in 4x8 sheets and must be cut to the 4x4 size. (3) 8ft 2x4 treated lumber * sub cut into 5 pieces 2 for the Top and Bottom 48 and 2 for the sides cut at 41 and 1 for the leveling board cut at 41. (4) 4 or 5 connector plates (1 pound box) 2 stainless steel screws to hold the frame to the MDO Board (2) 4 or 5 stainless steel eyebolts * used to hoist the Barn Quilt up onto the structure Paintable exterior caulk Assembly of a 4x4 Barn Quilt Directions 1. Lay out the frame on a clean flat surface (2-48 boards for the top and bottom and 2-41 boards for the sides) Precut a 41 Leveling Board t be used during installation. 2. Attach the connector plates at each junction of the 2x4s. The plates will go on the backside and against the surface of the barn/structure. 3. Turn frame over with the connector plates on the bottom and lay the 4x4 MDO board on the frame making sure the frame and board are square. 4. Use 2 steel screws to fasten the MDO board to the frame. (See helpful hint) 5. Drill two holes in the top board at 1 and 3 feet to accommodate the eyebolts (installed after painting) 6. Run a bead of paintable caulk around the sides of the MDO Board and the seams of the framed Barn Quilt and use a putty knife to smooth caulking. For a more finished look: You may want to use 1 5/8 screws rather than 2 screws and counter sink them when attaching the MDO board the frame. If you choose to do this you will need exterior wood putty to fill the screw holes. Sand wood putty to a smooth finish prior to priming the MDO board. You may choose to frame your Barn Quilt in the same manner of the 8x8 (see figure 1) where the Leveling Board is placed at the bottom of the Barn Quilt. If you do this it should be cut at 48 NOT 41 and will need painted the same color as the sides of your Barn Quilt. Also be sure to seal with clear silicone at the seams after installation. 3

4 8X8 Barn Quilt (2) 4x8 one sided exterior grade MDO Outdoor Sign Board. (6) 8ft 2x4 treated lumber * cut 3 to 85 ½ inches for sides and center seam board * two 8ft boards will be used for the top and bottom and one 8ft board will be used for the Leveling Board (6) 4 or 5 connector plates (1 pound box) 2 stainless steel screws to hold the frame to the MDO Board (2) 4 or 5 stainless steel eyebolts * used to hoist the Barn Quilt up onto the structure Clear exterior silicone caulk * will be used after painting to seal seams 1. Drill 2 holes in the top board of the frame to accommodate the eyebolts at 2 and 6 foot points. (Installed after priming and painting the top board) 2. Lay the frame out on a clean flat surface. (2 8ft boards for the top and bottom and 3 85 ½ boards for the sides and center seam). 3. Attach the connector plates at each junction of the 2x4s. The plates will go on the backside and against the surface of the barn/structure. 4. Turn frame over with the connector plates on the bottom and lay the 2 4x8 MDO boards (your painted Barn Quilt) on the frame making sure the frame and boards are square. Your Barn Quilt will extend 3 ½ beyond the bottom of the frame to accommodate the Leveling Board during the installation. 5. Keeping the MDO board flush with top and sides, use 2 stainless steel screws to attach the board to the frame. Fasten inside corners to the center 2x4 first at the seam. Space the remaining screws about 18 apart along the outside and center edges of the Barn Quilt. 6. Run a bead of clear silicone caulk around edges of the MDO Board and the sides of the framed Barn Quilt and use a putty knife to smooth caulking. Helpful Hints It is suggested that an 8x8 Barn Quilt be assembled on the site where it will be installed. See figure 1 for assembly diagram Priming Your Barn Quilt High quality EXTERIOR wood primer.. : Paint Rollers/brushes Paint thinner Paint Pan Paint Stir Sticks Drop Clothes or something to protect the work area 1. Prime the MDO board and the framing lumber. 4

5 2. Apply 2 coats of primer on flat surfaces and 4 coats of primer on the sides. Helpful Hints; Oil based primer is recommended If you choose to use a Latex Exterior Primer we recommend painting the underside of your Barn Quilt. Transferring Your Graphed Design on Your Barn Quilt Board Referring to your graphed design: 1. Lightly draw gridlines onto your primed MDO sign board. 2. Using the pencil and straight edge/yardstick begin your design by measuring and finding the center of the board working outward in both directions to draw the gridlines. 3. Once you have your design onto your MDO board thoroughly erase all gridlines not needed to identify the chosen pattern. 4. Mark each section of your pattern to identify the color to be painted. You can use a pencil and mark an R for red (etc) or use a post it so you don t have to erase it. 8X8 Barn Quilts will be made up of two 4X8 boards and the seam must be lined up vertically and have the exact image drawn in mirror form. (A vertical seam will help prevent moisture from collecting at the seam. Be sure your pattern lines up at the seam.) Painting Your Barn Quilt Exterior Latex Paint. Recommendation -Sherwin Williams Resilience or Duration. Paint brushes Yellow Frog Tape Utility knife/exacto knife/scissors to trim and cut painter s tape 1. Using tape, outline the areas the lightest color in your designed Barn Quilt pressing firmly on tape around edges 2. Allow the first coat of paint to dry and apply a second coat 3. Remove tape and begin taping the next area to be painted 4. Paint all frame pieces (and the Leveling Board if used at the bottom of an 8x8 Barn Quilt) 5. Touch up as needed 5

6 Helpful Hints Light or translucent colors may need more than two coats of paint. Paint multiple thin coats rather than fewer thick coats of paint If you are using a Post Mount for a 4x4 be sure to apply 2 coats of paint on the backside of your MDO board and frame. Allow plenty of time to dry between coats of paint and before moving on to next section of taping and painting. When taping, place tape just outside the pencil lines and be certain tape is pressed tightly to the board. If you are painting a border paint the sides of the MDO board for a more uniform appearance. A sealer is not recommended for a top coat. When/if the square needs repainted or touched up a sealer will hinder repainting. Installing/Mounting Your Barn Quilt 4x4 Barn Quilt Structure/Barn Mount Pre-cut Leveling Board cut to 41 (2) 4 or 5 eye bolts: Recommendation - stainless steel or zinc to prevent rust (4) 2 deck screws (5) 4 or 5 long contractor stainless steel deck screws to attach the Leveling Board to the structure (4) 6 large contractor stainless steel deck screws to attach top of the Barn Quilt to the structure/barn Screw gun Level Clear Silicone Caulking 1. Install 2 eyebolts in the predrilled holes at the top of the frame. Drive eyebolt through each hole with a galvanized washer at the top and bottom of the eyebolt and secure with a nut. The eyebolts will be used to hoist the Barn Quilt up to the mounting location on the structure and can be left in place. 2. Attach the 41 Leveling Board to the Barn/Structure with the 4 or 5 deck screws at the desired height making sure it is level. See figure Hoist the Barn Quilt into position using the eyebolts 4. Rest the top board of the Barn Quilt on the Leveling Board and secure the Barn Quilt to the Leveling Boards with 2 deck screws. 5. Use one 6 deck screw at each corner to secure the Barn Quilt to the Barn/Structure. 6. Apply the clear silicone between the Barn Quilt and the Barn/Structure to keep moisture out. 6

7 Screw heads can be touched up with matching paint. There are many hardware options to secure your Barn Quilt to the posts. If you prefer not to directly screw the Barn Quilt to the Barn/Structure see a local hardware dealer to discuss your hardware options. 4x4 Barn Quilts can also be mounted on posts. If you are using a post mount option be sure to seal all seams on the backside with caulk and to paint it to protect from the weather. 8x8 Barn Quilt- Structure/Barn Mount Leveling Board (1 2x4 8ft) (2) 4 or 5 eye bolts: Recommendation - stainless steel or zinc to prevent rust (4) 2 deck screws (5) 4 or 5 long contractor stainless steel deck screws to attach the Leveling Board to the structure (4) 6 large contractor stainless steel deck screws to attach top of the Barn Quilt to the structure/barn Screw gun Level Clear Silicone Caulk 1. Using the 4 or 5 screws, attach the pre-painted 8ft Leveling Board to the Barn/Structure at the desired height making sure it is level. The board should be centered and placed exactly where you want the bottom of the Barn Quilt to be. 3. Hoist the Barn Quilt to position using the eyebolts 4. Rest the bottom board of the Barn Quilt on the Leveling Board and secure the Barn Quilt to the Leveling Boards with 2 deck screws. 5. Use four 6 deck screw at the top to secure the Barn Quilt to the Barn/Structure. 6. Apply the clear silicone between the Barn Quilt and the Barn/Structure to keep moisture out. Screw heads can be touched up with matching paint.
