4 What is phonics all about? phonics is skills of segmentation and blending + knowledge of the alphabetic code (phoneme grapheme correspondences)
5 Blending and Segmentation Blending Segmentation Merging the individual phonemes together to pronounce a word. Hear and say the individual phonemes within words To read unfamiliar words a child must recognise (sound out) each grapheme, not each letter, then merge the phonemes together to make a word In order to spell, children need to segment a word into its component phonemes and choose a grapheme to represent each phoneme

7 Why is phonics important? Research shows that phonics is a really effective way to help children to read and write The government want children to learn in this way Y1 children will be tested in the summer term to make sure that are making expected progress
8 Letters and Sounds At Kennall Vale School staff teach daily phonics lessons in Key Stage 1.These lessons follow a systematic progressive order Your child will enter the programme on a level appropriate to them and will move through each level as they are ready. Your child will read books that are aligned to the phonics they are learning in class
9 Daily Phonics Your child will have a daily phonics lesson. These are taught in small groups of children at the same level as them. Each session contains opportunities for applying new knowledge in reading and writing.
10 There are 44 sounds in our language. Children need to be taught how to read and write them. Look at graphemes chart.

19 Moving on Teachers at Kennall Vale School want children to learn to read as quickly as possible. They aim to teach children all 44 phonemes by the end of Y1 Most children will achieve this, but a small number of children may need additional support and the school will put this in place as soon as possible Teachers at Kennall Vale School want children to keep up not catch up!
20 What happens in KS2? Children no longer need a daily phonics lesson Children begin to learn spelling rules and patterns such as prefixes, suffixes, plurals, past tense etc. They still use phonics as the prime approach to spelling
21 Helping at home Aim for 100% attendance Practise quick recall of letter sounds Prompt your child to sound out words Use the correct pronunciation of letter sounds Support children with correct letter formation encourage them to think about handwriting families! Encourage children to use phonics first when they want to read or spell Listen to your child read every day and talk about the story to develop comprehension Read aloud to your child so they enjoy stories foster a love of books Talk to your child as much as possible and feed them new and different words
