3 Page 3 Volume 39, Issue 1 Vice President s Report Kathy Schumacher I have been on the WCMT Executive Board for about 16 years consecutively including Secretary, Treasurer, President and Vice President. It has been fun watching the association grow and change. My first few years on the Executive Board, we actually corresponded by snail mail! Can you imagine? At this time, we are in need of several people to run for office in our upcoming election. A slate of officers will be presented at our Fall meeting on October 8 th. We are in need of a Secretary, Vice President, President Elect and President and we urge you to consider running for office. The camaraderie with other professionals is a ton of fun and the impact you have on music therapy clients is immense. As Vice President, I don t have much to report. So, I m going to send another song your way. Perhaps I will continue the trend after my time on the board has ended. To prepare for Fall, I m sending one of my favorite interventions to use for Thanksgiving, appropriately titled Thanksgiving Song. I like to pass an object around the circle to live or recorded music. When the music stops, whoever is holding the object gets to tell us one thing for which they are thankful. I have used this with all ages. It has an ending everyone loves and seems to be an appropriate way to end this newsletter article I am thankful for you, and you, and you, and you, and you! The population may include Autism Spectrum Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, Mental Retardation, Psychosis, and Dual Diagnosis. In addition, the position offers unique opportunities for continued growth professionally. This individual will benefit from participating is a work environment that focuses on team work and problem solving. The following are some highlighted parts of the position: provide weekly one on one music therapy sessions completed in the home or office setting, communication with family members and team members for the purpose of enhancing quality of life, complete weekly progress notes to summarize client progress toward goals, completion of yearly comprehensive music therapy assessments, narrative assessments, and a music therapy treatment plan, and participation in quarterly meetings along with other community opportunities in addition to continuing education opportunities, supervision, and co-therapy services. Eau Claire AMTAS Update Amber Tappe, Representative Over the summer UW Eau Claire students Iansa Zaldarriaga, Kathryn Henderson and Rachel Philipps have been working with Lee Anna Rasar at the Syverson Lutheran Home on a grant to examine short term memory for rhythm patterns for residents on a dementia unit. Congratulations to the new officers for AMTAS for this coming year: President: Amber Tappe President Elect: Olivia Szmanda Business Secretary: Iansa Zaldarriaga AMTAS will be sponsoring students in providing music in therapeutic venues in the community on a weekly basis this coming fall. A group of students who were going to a local nursing home across the street from their dorm had contacted Lee Anna Rasar about some service learning opportunities. Lee Anna joined them at the Clairemont Nursing and Rehabilitation and then they sent a representative to join in with AMTAS members at Mt. Washington Residence at the end of the spring semester. Lee Anna Rasar received a grant from the UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity curriculum development program. The goal of the project is to develop the curriculum for a new course on the history of the guitar and four targeted ethnic groups: African American, Hispanic, American Indian, and Asian American.

6 Page 6 Volume 39, Issue 1 News from Dr. Dale Taylor, MT-BC On Thursday, July 21, 2011, at a meeting of the Wisconsin Board on Aging and Long Term Care, Representative Daniel Knodl, on behalf of Governor Scott Walker, presented to the agency a Proclamation declaring August 1st through August 7th as Board on Aging and Long Term Care Week in celebration of the agency's 30th anniversary. The picture shows Dr. Dale Taylor, MT-BC, Chairman of the Board, accepting the Proclamation on behalf of the Board. It should be noted that in addition to the board chair, the top two staff members of the agency, Executive Director Heather Bruemmer, and Kim Marheine, Ombudsman Services Supervisor for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, also are music therapists. The Proclamation reads as follows: STATE of WISCONSIN OFFICE of the GOVERNOR PROCLAMATION Whereas; the board on Aging and Long Term Care was established and enabled by sections 30h, 30i and 57m of Chapter 20 of the Laws of 1981 which was signed by then Governor Lee Sheman Dreyfus; and Whereas; the board on Aging and Long Term Care is given policy direction by the Board of Directors which is composed of a diverse group of seven citizens who are active participants in establishing the focus, goals and plans for the agency; and Whereas; the board on Aging and Long Term Care Ombudsman and Volunteer Ombudsman Programs of the Board of Aging and Long Term Care have proven to be conscientious and committed advocates for the rights and interests of the elderly and disable citizens of Wisconsin living in long term care facilities; and Whereas; the staff of the Medigap Help Line of the board on Aging and Long Term Care is widely recognized as being extraordinarily competent at providing assistance to persons who are seeking to navigate the complex systems of Medicare and Medicaid; and Whereas; the board on Aging and Long Term Care has been recognized by citizens as a committed organization working within state government to serve the wider goal of a more compassionate society; and Whereas; the board on Aging and Long Term Care has engaged in direct advocacy on behalf of individuals with Alzheimer's and other dementia, and programs within the board continue to conduct effective public outreach to educate and empower individuals and their families; NOW, THEREFORE, I Scott Walker, Governor of the State of Wisconsin, do hereby designate the week of August 1 - August 7, 2011, as BOARD ON AGING AND LONG TERM CARE WEEK throughout the State of Wisconsin, and I commend this observance to all of our citizens. IN TESTIMONY WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Wisconsin to be affixed.
