(American Music Therapy Association, 2013) Increasing Knowledge Music Therapist Training Bachelor s Degree (BMT) Includes practicums Music, psychology, & health science courses 6 month internship (at an approved site) Board Certification Exam Recertified every 5 years (100 CMTE s)

7 Jam Break Music Therapy in Practice Music therapy goals are: Measurable Based on collected data Specific to the individual Appropriate for the ability of the individual Music Therapy in Practice Examples of Music Therapy Goals: To increase communication skills to increase positive coping skills to reduce anxiety to increase self esteem to increase gross or fine motor skills to increase academic skills
8 Music Therapy in Practice Examples of Music Therapy Goals Goal: To increase articulation. Objective: Johnny will clearly pronounce the letter P 50% of the time, for 6 consecutive sessions. Intervention: At two points during each session the music therapist will provide the client with a song passage to read that includes at least 7 opportunities to pronounce the letter P. Music Therapy in Practice Examples of Music Therapy Objectives Goal: To increase motor skills. Objective: Mary will independently strike the drum 10 times during a song, for 8 consecutive sessions. Intervention: During the session the music therapist will provide Mary with at least four opportunities to play the drum along with a song of her choosing. Music Therapy in Practice Examples of Music Therapy Objectives Goal: To increase self esteem. Objective: Frank will work on songwriting for at least 10 minutes each session, for 4 consecutive quarters. Intervention: The music therapist will provide choices for Frank to choose from regarding song topic, genre, and instrumentation. The songs he writes will be performed at his quarterly meeting for the team.

11 Working Together Case Example: Started with Music Therapy B 16, autism verbal, but mostly repetitive, one word MT goal: to increase communication BC goal: to increase positive coping skills teaching her to engage in a chaotic environment teaching her to state what she needs, instead of repeating Techniques used with B Require her to take turns choosing songs Require her to make requests using full sentences Work on dynamic changes Work on receptive communication (requiring her to listen) *have her recall words from a new song each week *have her play an instrument on specific words in a new song Discussion & Questions
