29 Model Import Columns modeled to nodal points If importing from RAM or another design model, the columns will more than likely be modeled from floor-to-floor, not from base to roof or base to splice level. BE CAREFUL HERE ABM KILLER!!

30 Model Import Beams modeled to nodal points If importing from RAM or another design model, the beams may be modeled at beam centerline. Beams may be come in at top of slab instead of top of steel. If importing from REVIT, this can be controlled make sure to ask for a drawing model (not an analytical model or analytical / drawing combo).

36 BIM Building Information Modeling A process, not a software The AGC defines BIM as an object- oriented building development tool that utilizes 5-D modeling concepts, information technology and software interoperability to design, construct and operate a building project, as well as communicate its details.

37 BIM What is your definition / application of BIM? Receiving a model from the engineer. Providing a model to the engineer. Providing a model to the MEP sub for duct penetration coordination. Providing a model to the architect for incorporation to the design model, Providing the contractor with a model for incorporation into a multi-discipline model. Receiving AutoCAD drawings from the A/E team, with instructions to scale all dimensions.

38 Keys to a successful BIM project Walk away (JUST KIDDING!!) Know your capabilities. Define the scope of BIM up front. It s probably too late to go BIM mid-way through the project. Do you need to model in all of the bent plate, hangers, kickers, etc? Test compatibility with other software before starting.
