Genuine spare parts from Flygt No worries In a long-term perspective, the advantages of using a hardened metal are many: lower energy consumption, reduced maintenance costs and fewer unexpected problems. In other words no worries. 2

3 Hard, hardened, hardest At first glance, most impellers look pretty much the same. But when it comes to wear resistance, our impellers are incomparable. At Flygt, we manufacture the impellers ourselves, in our own foundry and workshop. This allows us to make products that are substantially harder than anything else on the market. We ve developed a hardened high-chrome cast iron that gives an HRC of 60 (a standard impeller measures just HRC). Add to this the high chrome content and you get an impeller with outstanding wear resistance. In real life this means longer operation at rated performance, lower maintenance costs and extended impeller lifetime. Go with the flow When it comes to slurry impellers, it s not just a question of finding the right material. It s also a matter of minimizing the damage caused by abrasive solids. With the help of advanced in-house computer programmes, we have been able to simulate an infinite number of hydraulic patterns. The swept-back design of the slurry impeller vanes is one result of this design work. We found that by altering the angle of the vanes, we could reduce the separation of solids from the carrying fluid. By making the flow more homogenous, we ve reduced wear, prolonged service intervals and cut energy consumption. Wear parts that wear less It s not only impellers that are subjected to high wear. The same goes for the diffuser, the suction cover and the oil-house bottom. What s the point in having the world s toughest impeller if you still have to change wear parts all the time? The secret to longer service intervals is to use the right material in the right place. For media that contain larger particles or that are warmer than 50 C we recommend nitrile rubber. And for liquids with smaller solids and cooler temperatures, PolyLife provides excellent wear resistance. Bearings made for submersibles Using poor quality bearings is a risky business. They can overheat and then seize up. And should bearings fail, the consequences can be serious: seals will leak and the rotor and stator can get damaged. That s why we don t take risks. In a Flygt pump, the main and support bearings are based on a special design. This is necessary to counteract the powerful radial forces generated by the rotor and impeller. What s in a grease? One of the main reasons bearings fail is because an unsuitable grease was used. An incorrectly specified grease might stop working because: first, it cannot tolerate the kneading action in the bearing and becomes either too hard or too soft; and second, it cannot take high temperatures, which results in the grease melting and dripping out. But it s difficult to know how a grease will perform just by looking at the specifications. Flygt s bearing grease is the result of years of testing and field experience. It offers a high level of physical and chemical stability, which gives you the security to plan service intervals. There s one further reason why bearings fail: they are packed with too much or too little grease. With Flygt s grease cartridge, you can control exactly how much grease goes into each bearing. 3

4 The right stuff Most materials used for the face of the seal offer either good corrosion resistance or high durability. Working together with metallurgists, we have developed a unique tungsten carbide alloy that offers both. The result is a surface material that will give you long-term reliability under the toughest conditions, including corrosive environments, high pressure and poor lubrication. A smooth transfer of power A low quality shaft unit, or one that has been badly repaired, can make a pump unbalanced, which can result in vibrations. These will increase noise levels, damage the stator and even weaken the seals. To maintain good balance in our pumps, we ve developed a highly accurate manufacturing process that allows us to produce shafts and shaft units to the most exacting tolerances. A smoothly running shaft also ensures high motor efficiency and lower energy consumption. More power to your pump Standard rubber cables are not designed for submersible use and that can lead to problems. SUBCAB has been developed by Flygt for use in submersible applications. Due to its low absorption rate, it retains its mechanical and physical properties even after long periods of use. SUBCAB also provides high mechanical strength thanks to an outer sheathing of chlorinated polyethylene. The coolest operator What causes premature motor failure? Nine times out of ten, it s due to overheating. We ve reduced the risk of heat build-up in many different ways. Here are two. The most common method to insulate stators is to dip them in a bath of varnish. However, this can leave pockets of air in the windings and air doesn t transfer heat well. At Flygt, we let the insulation trickle through the windings. The capillary force between the densely packed wires sucks the resin from strand to strand, fills the gaps and eliminates any pockets of air. The stators in most Flygt pumps are build to insulation class H, the highest class for normal use. Class H is rated to run at 180 C, which is 90 C above the average operating temperature. The reason why we insist on such a large margin is simple: for every 10 C a motor runs under its insulation class, you double its lifetime. To ensure a leak-free fit, the cable has been designed to work together with the cable entry sealing device. SUBCAB easily withstands the high pressure of the sealing grommet and its precise tolerances provide a good tight fit. SUBCAB can be used in media with ambient temperatures of up to 70 C. O-rings with 0 tolerance Even the humble O-ring is an important link in the chain. Flygt s O-rings are made to exacting tolerances use one that more or less fits and the few pennies you saved could turn out to be a costly mistake. Made of nitrile or fluorinated rubber, our O-rings are specified to seal effectively at both high and low temperatures. Since old O-rings keep just 80 percent of their original shape, it s important to replace all O-rings every time you dismantle a pump. 4

We found that sand and other abrasive solids have a tendency to find their way into the area behind the impeller, known as the seal chamber. There the particles rotate, wearing down the outer seal and the oil-house bottom. Spin-Out consists of a spiral groove in the oil-house bottom that spins all solids out of the seal chamber. The results have exceeded expectations: in some cases, seal lifetime has been increased by up to 50 percent.
