2 Network Neurology was founded by Dr. Robert P. Turner, MD, MSCR, QEEGD, a pediatric neurologist with nearly 30 years clinical, teaching, and research experience. Dr. Turner holds multiple board certifications; has practiced and taught at MUSC for over 16 years with dozens of clinical and teaching awards; has diagnosed and treated some of the most complex and rare neurological disorders effecting children; and is considered a national and international expert in his field, with academic collaborations throughout the United States, Mexico City, Cape Town, and Shanghai. Dr. Turner is supported by his Network Neurology team of highly qualified and experienced advanced practice medical providers, including two pediatric nurse practitioners and a physician assistant, each of whom are known and valued for their diligence, expertise, excellence in clinical care, and dedicated commitment to this challenging yet rewarding specialty of neuroscience. As an integrative neurological practice, the Network Neurology team combines the experience and diagnostic expertise of our medical providers with various treatment options, including pharmaceutical interventions, nutritional interventions, as well as proven innovative, noninvasive neurotherapy techniques implemented by our team of highly skilled clinical neurotherapists and EEG technologists. In order to provide comprehensive and compassionate care, we work in partnership with our primary care colleagues and specialists throughout South Carolina and the Southeast. We also work with expert dieticians trained in the administration and oversight of specialized nutritional therapies, such as the ketogenic diet, which have shown significant success for those suffering from epilepsy and seizures. Additionally, we collaborate with physical, occupational, and speech & language therapists to maximize developmental potential and outcomes. At Network Neurology, we provide consultation and treatment services for children of all ages with a wide spectrum of neurologic conditions. We also offer neurodiagnostic testing and neurotherapy training to children as well as adults. Our clinical team is highly trained and experienced in the diagnosis of outpatient neurological disorders, as well as treatment and/or management of: Seizure / Epilepsy Developmental Delays / Regression Autistic Spectrum Disorders Neurometabolic Disorders ADD / ADHD Demyelinating Disorders Migraine / Headache Concussion Cerebral Palsy Movement Disorders Our primary goal is to accurately diagnose the source of neurological problems and work toward eliminating them with the clinically appropriate use of medications, along with other complementary therapies. When it comes to your health and healing, obtaining the right diagnosis is critical. Our thorough clinical assessments, along with dynamic neurophysiological evaluations of brain function, help us accurately determine the most appropriate interventions to resolve symptoms and restore health. Along with excellence in clinical care, we provide education and support for both our patients and their families, many of whom experience significant distress and uncertainty as a result of these neurological problems. As such, the assessments we provide not only offer diagnostic sensitivity and specificity but also hope, encouragement, and a clear roadmap toward recovery.
3 An Introduction to Neurotherapy Neurotherapy is a clinical process for changing the electrical activity of the brain using electroencephalography-based feedback and/or electrical stimulation. Neurotherapy consists of a variety of different therapeutic techniques which improve self-regulation and condition the brain to work more efficiently by adjusting excessive or deficient brainwave activity. The disciplines of neurotherapy and neurophysiology involve using newly applied, scientifically validated, diagnostic techniques, including 3D tomographic source analysis and quantitative EEG (qeeg), along with standard surface-derived electroencephalography. These diagnostic techniques produce amazing accuracy in defining regions and networks in the brain that are functioning in unhealthy ways. The precision of these approaches, combined with progressive, noninvasive training techniques, such as neurofeedback, peripheral biofeedback, and heart rate variability training, allow for optimal re-training of brain networks toward stable, healthy patterns. Under the direct supervision of multiple board certified pediatric neurologist, Robert P Turner, MD, MSCR, QEEGD, our BCIA trained and certified team offers these unique diagnostic and treatment options to children as well as adults experiencing a wide spectrum of neurological problems. Network Neurology is the first (and currently only) medical practice of its kind in South Carolina and is one of only a handful of similar practices nationwide. What is a qeeg? A quantitative electroencephalogram (qeeg) is an extremely reliable and sophisticated method of detecting neurological conditions that may be overlooked through other methods of testing. The qeeg measures electrical activity from multiple areas of the brain and mathematically analyzes the data to precisely determine locations where brainwave activity is outside the standardized range and has caused neurological symptoms. Once analyzed, the information is then synthesized into a comprehensive and detailed report, including a functional brain map which clearly depicts affected areas correlating with symptoms. The qeeg report and brain map are used to develop extremely effective and targeted plans for neurofeedback training which has the potential to normalize brainwave activity and eliminate or significantly improve symptoms. What is qeeg-guided neurofeedback? Neurofeedback is a self-regulatory, therapeutic process used to promote better health and restore the brain s natural internal balance through a series of noninvasive training sessions. Electrode sensors are placed on the head at appropriate training locations as identified by the qeeg brain map analysis. Sensor placement is unique to every person, as well as specific to their needs, as is the number of training sessions needed to achieve optimal results. During the session, brainwave activity is recorded and interpreted to generate data that instantly and continuously feeds back visual and auditory stimuli to the brain through games, videos, and/or audio feedback. This feedback then conditions the brain to produce the desired brainwave activity ( self-regulation ) by using a system of reward reinforcement. Once optimal activity is established, neurofeedback is no longer necessary. Neurofeedback training can resolve symptoms noninvasively, painlessly, and effectively; and the results are almost always permanent, much like when a person has learned to ride a bicycle. Common conditions treated with neurofeedback: Seizures / Epilepsy Concussion / Traumatic Brain Injury Autistic Spectrum Disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Migraine / Headache Encephalopathy Learning Difficulties Depression ADD / ADHD Anxiety and Stress-Related Disorders
