2 WELCOME Whitgift School is an outstanding British independent school, founded in 1600, renowned for its first-class education. During the summer holidays, Whitgift runs its own Summer School, utilising all its fantastic facilities and new boarding house. This Summer School, with its innovative syllabus and focus on the use of English in Action, is designed to appeal to girls and boys from all over the world. In our English language course, students in the Middle School (11 14 years) and the Senior School (14-17 years) learn in small groups, and, through immersion, develop confidence and fluency in their English language skills. To ensure communication continues in English, careful consideration is given to the balance of participating nationalities. Pupils of Whitgift School and our sister school, Old Palace of John Whitgift, who are English native speakers, also assist within English lessons, co-curricular and social programmes. These students, known as Student Hosts, play an integral role and give a real purpose to the use of English. Whitgift s superb facilities are utilised for an exciting and varied sports and creative activities programme, in which students can deploy their newly-learned English skills. Through team and group work, pupils develop social skills, and are encouraged to continue learning in a dynamic and exciting way. Our passionate, caring and enthusiastic staff focus on creating an inclusive and safe environment, thus generating a home-from-home setting, in which students can thrive, and, importantly, have fun. Teachers, social organisers and activity staff all encourage interaction with other students, and ensure integration in order to help them become part of the Whitgift Summer School family. 4 WHITGIFT SCHOOL Whitgift School is located in South London, in 18 hectares of beautiful parkland. The inspiring and spacious grounds were once owned by King Henry VIII. Whitgift Summer School has full use of all of Whitgift s outstanding facilities. On the sports front, there is a modern, indoor Sports and Conference Centre, with a 25-metre, variable-depth swimming pool, fitness suite, sports hall, and four glass-backed squash courts. There is also a large number of sports pitches, including an all-weather pitch, a golf practice facility, and three tennis courts. For our Creative Activities, students use our Performing Arts complex, which consists of a Performing Arts Centre, Concert Hall, music practice rooms, and film studios.

6 LEARN ENGLISH English Lessons The English language is at the centre of all lessons and activities at Whitgift Summer School. Our students are completely immersed in English throughout the day and evening. We have developed a unique syllabus, which combines English Skills lessons with using English in our carefully-balanced English in Action lessons. Students have a total of 23 hours of English lessons per week. English Skills Pupils are placed in classes, by age and capability, to make sure that they are in a group most suited to their ability level. The maximum class size is 14 (classes are often smaller), to enable the teacher to give students individual attention. English in Action The English Skills lessons are linked to the innovative programme English in Action. In these lessons, students in the Middle School (11-14 years) will focus on life and social skills. They will be taught presentation techniques and will work on tasks focusing on communication and teamwork. Students in the Senior School (14-17 years) will have an emphasis on life and business skills. Besides acquiring presentation and debating competence, they will undertake fun and exciting entrepreneurial activities. This is a completely different approach to learning, and whilst students learn new skills, they will also use English for a real purpose. The fact that we have English pupils taking part will be a huge benefit to our international students. English Student Hosts We want to encourage our Summer School students to communicate in English throughout their stay. To help achieve this aim, pupils of Whitgift School and our sister school, Old Palace, take part in all aspects of the Summer School. We believe interacting with English native speakers of a similar age makes the English learning process more meaningful, and leads to potentially long-lasting friendships.

8 SPORTS/CREATIVE ACTIVITIES We place great emphasis on learning outside the classroom; our Sports and Creative Activities programme is a vital part of the experience. Groups will be split into Middle School (11 14 years) and Senior School (14 17 years). Our English Student Hosts will take part in the full range of the Sports and Creative Activities Programme. Whitgift s outstanding facilities come into play in this part of the Whitgift Summer School course, and the following sports and creative activities are available: Sports Football Tennis Hockey Survival skills Basketball Badminton Table tennis Dance Swimming Water polo Horseriding* Golf* Creative Activities Arts and Crafts Music Film-making/YouTubing Performing Arts (Dance, Drama, Singing) Academies and Multi-Activity Course A wide variety of Academies and a Mult- Activity Course are offered, enabling every student to find activities which interest him/her. Academies include four 90-minute sessions of specialist coaching, with appropriatelyqualified instructors, over a one-week period. 10 EVENINGS/WEEKENDS In the evenings and at weekends, there is an organised programme put on by our team of dynamic and enthusiastic social organisers. This programme is designed to be fun, but also to encourage our students to deepen their friendships with others from all over the world. There is a wide variety of evening and weekend activities, for example: Talent Shows, Discos, Karaoke Evenings, Fun & Games, Quiz Competitions, Cinema Trips, Bowling, Wakeboarding, etc.

12 ACCOMMODATION Our students stay in Founder s House, a new, state-of-the-art boarding house, opened by HRH The Duke of York, KG, Whitgift s Patron, in October The boarding house is situated overlooking our Water Gardens, which are home to exotic species such as flamingos and wallabies. Some staff members also stay in Founder s House to supervise students, and there is a nurse on call 24 hours a day. and internet access is available, enabling students to stay in touch with their families. Inside Founder s House, there are communal areas which invite Whitgift Summer School students to relax and socialise. All bedrooms are single, double or triple rooms, and have their own en-suite bathrooms. Students will share their room with somebody of the same sex and a similar age, but of a different nationality.

16 LONDON Whitgift s excellent links to the London transport network make it possible to access central London within 30 minutes. Given this enviable location, trips and excursions are an integral part of Whitgift Summer School, and we want our students to experience all that London has to offer. These trips are part of the syllabus, and are researched and prepared for in lessons. Linking these trips to lessons results in a more meaningful experience, and it will also create longerlasting memories.
