2 What has the FAA been doing recently?

3 FAA UAS approval update Approval for Commercial Use Small UAS Notice of Proposed Rule Making (NPRM) delayed until Nov month public comment period following NPRM release FAA modifications based on public input months Other Fed agency reviews and approvals 3-6 months Best case for approval August 2015 Worst case for approval May 2016

4 Who can fly a UAS now in the US? Government agencies with a COA There are currently 545 active COAs (as of Dec 2013) Companies with a Special Airworthiness Certificate (SAC) Approx. 60 active SACs Very limited use restricted to a specific, isolated location For marketing demos, R&D testing and training only Model Aircraft operators For recreational activities only Authorized by AC-91-57

5 FAA Recent UAS Activities The Roadmap for Integration of UAS into the National Airspace System (NAS) was released publically on 7 Nov 2013 Six UAS research and test site operators were chosen on 30 Dec 2013 Approval was given to two UAS operators in the Arctic for commercial UAS work

6 FAA enforcement activities FAA does investigate reported use of UAS for commercial operations Approx. 23 cases have been investigated by the FAA; administrative and/or legal action was taken in each case Most common is the issuance of a cease and desist letter Example- Letter to Univ. of Missouri School of Journalism At least two individuals have been fined $10,000 for flying in a careless and reckless manner endangering life and property Raphael Pirker fined; has appealed the lawsuit, it is now being reviewed by US DOT administrative hearing judge UAS used to photograph a fatal auto accident site in Hartford, CT - now being investigated by FAA Case in Minnesota being investigated
