COMMUNICATION WITH HITACHI PROGRAMMABLE CONTROLLERS Communication is a complicated process; there are many things that can go wrong including incorrect settings; everything must be correct to make it work. To facilitate the communication we have put together some instructions for making the correct adjustments. We will discuss baud, stop bits, parity and protocol. If you do not fully understand the meaning of those expressions, it does not really matter since you can use the default values described after each section. NOTE: Communications cables discussed in this document fall in to two categories; one-piece, and modular. Cables normally supplied with software packages are of the modular variety, and are discussed throughout this document (color coded), and discussed in detail on the last page. Elsewhere, pin-outs for the one-piece cables are provided. - Communication through a PGMJ-R(2) - PGMJ-R (and its successor PGMJ-R2 is still the most common method to accomplish communication with the smaller programmable controllers (series J 1 /E 2 /EB 3 /EM 4 ), but the newer model programmable controllers will connect directly to the computer. The PGMJ-R(2) has a serial connector that can either be used for computer communication or for printouts (utilizing a serial printer). The PGMJ-R is delivered from factory with the default setting: 4800 baud, 1 stop bit and no parity. To achieve the best results with the ActSip programs, the setting should be 9600 baud, 1 stop bit and no parity. The DIP-switches on the PGMJ-R should be set like this; NOTE: Communications to the PLC using the PGMJ- R(2) is only possible on computers with 286, 386, and 486 processors. Communications errors may result if attempted with Pentium grade (or better) processors! Switch 1 changes the PGM-JR(2) from a hand-held programmer, to a protocol converter. It should be ON for computer communication and OFF for handheld programming. Cable: Connect the PGMJ-R with the long main cable (MAIN/EB) (color-coded grey/red) together with the small PGMJ- R cable (red/blue). (Other modular cables are discussed on the last page of this document.) - Direct communication with a programmable controller At this time only the older model programmable controllers use the PGM-JR(2) (or PIF-J (See notes 1 & 2 below) ) for connection to the computer. This includes the J-series, E-series, EB-series (as indicated in footnote #3 below), and the early EM and EMII processors (see footnote #4). To enter a program into these older models, there are two choices; use the PGMJ-R as a hand-held programmer, or use the PGMJ-R (or PIF-J) as a protocol converter (direct communication to the PC using COM1 protocol). More recent units such as the EMII with CPM-E3 processor, or the EC(2) have provision for the two previously mentioned options, and have a third option of using the new fast method (COM2 protocol) again connecting the PGMJ-R to the PC. The latest models PLCs have direct connection capability. Please note! Do not confuse the names of the protocols (COM1/COM2) with the serial ports of the computer. In the ActSip programs MODE2 is used as the convention for COM2 PROTOCOL; of course it is possible to configure the communication port to meet the requirements of your PC.. In this text we will use the convention COM1 /COM2 protocol to indicate the protocol mode. Again, this does NOT refer to the serial ports on the PC. 1 Interface Module PIF-J featured a serial port used instead of the PGMJ-R(2). 2 The E-series could use the PIF-J. 2 EB-series: Programmable controllers of type CRP are the only one that can be used; the other two types do not have computer connection (see footnote #3). Connect the main cable (grey/red) between the EB and the computer. The settings in the software should be: PGM: through PGMJ-R COM 1: 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity. COM2: 9600 baud, MODE 2. EM-series: Only the CPM-E3 processor has a computer (serial) connection. The small E3 cable (red/green) should be connected with the MAIN/EB cable (grey/red) to the programmable controller. The speed (baud rate) is set with a switch on the CPU board. The default value is 9600 baud but can be changed to The software settings should be: PGM: through PGMJ-R COM 1: 9600 baud, 1 stop bit, no parity. COM2: 9600 baud, MODE 2. One-piece cable pin-out shown below. (See last page for descriptions of the modular cables). 4 The PGMJ-R(2) is required for the CPM-E and CPM-E2 processors. The CPM-E3 features a serial port. 3 EC-series: The EC and EC2 series 5 has a EIA232 6 port. Like the EM above, it features a three-position switch near the port. The switch positions are exactly the same as on the EM series: PGM, for connection to the hand-held programmers (PGM-J and/or PGM-JR(2)), COM1 for direct communications to the (IBM)PC, and COM2 for the enhanced (faster) communications. COM2 is the setting for optimal communications directly from the EC/EC2 to the computer. The port configuration is a 9-pin Mini Din, as compared to the DB9F on the EM (CPM-E3). 5 In 1998 the processor speed of the EC was doubled. This newer processor series is identified as EC2. 6 In the early 1960s, a standards committee, today known as the Electronic Industries Association, developed a common interface standard for data communications equipment. Over the next 30+ years three modifications (or upgrades) were introduced. The latest was in 1991, and besides changing the name from RS232 to EIA232, some signal lines were renamed and various new ones were defined, including a shield conductor. Page 3

4 MICRO-EH: The is the newest member of the Hitachi PLC family. Like all other Hitachi PLCs, MICRO-EH can be programmed using a standard laptop utilizing Actron Programming Software. In addition to digital standard modules, a unit with integrated analog I/O is available. These units feature one (or two) RJ45 type modular connectors for direct communications to the computer. These can also be utilized for connection to modem or HMI. Page 4

5 EH150-Series: The EH150-Series currently has five processors in its family. All have two (RJ45 type) ports. The EH- 150 has an exclusive port 7 and a general-purpose port. In addition to Port 1 that is capable of controlling a modem, a second port (Port 2) is provided that can connect to any programming tool. Port 1 of the EH-CPU308/316/448 (Type III and Type IV processors) can be used as either EIA 232C or EIA 485 by changing switch positions. The one-piece cable pin-out is presented below. See the last page of this document for information on the modular cables. 7 H200-Series: The H200, H250, and H252 series employ Large-H series processors, packaged in the same size modules as the EM-series. They utilize the EM-series mounting base, the same power supplies, and the same digital I/O. High function (like the CTH high speed counter) modules and analog I/O are unique to the H200. Just as the Large-H, direct connection to the (IBM)PC is accomplished via the serial port directly located on the processor card. The onepiece cable pin-out is presented below. See the last page of this document for information on the modular cables. (See Footnote #9.) NOTE: This cable is exactly the same as the cable needed for the Large-H series Hitachi. The H200/250/252 utilizes the same processor as the Large-H, although packaged in the smaller (EMII style) case. Page 7

8 H252C-Series: The H252C (Processor designated CPU22-02HC) features an extra EIA232C serial interface in addition to the DB15F as described in the previous section. This is extremely useful for connecting to two devices at once. For example: a HMI 8 can be permanently connected, while a programming devices is used on the second port. Likewise, a programming computer could be connected on one port while a hand-held device is connected to the other. Right, is the pin-out of the second port. 8 HMI is the three letter acronym for Human Machine Interface. Some users prefer O.I. or Operator Interface. Either signify a display device which takes the place of conventional operator panels with switches, push-buttons, and indicator lights. Cost savings are realized by space savings, as well as wiring being minimized. The HMI or OI panels typically are connected by a three wire shielded cable (in place of the multiple wiring bundles associated with operator panels. Page 8

9 H-series: This series has only direct connections to the computer (meaning no protocol converter such as the PGMJ- R(2) is required). Connect the small H cable (red/yellow) with the MAIN cable (grey/red) to the cable connector on the CPU module. The speed will change if you change the cable 9. It is originally set for baud. The settings in the software should be baud, 1 stop bit, 1 start bit and even parity. The one-piece cable pin-out is shown in the following diagram. See the last page for information on the modular cables. (See Footnote #9 below.) 9 PHL: The communications speed of the H-Series processor is determined in part by the cable. Note the jumper between pin 8 and pin 14 on the PLC side of the cable. When voltage from pin 14 (PV12) is applied to pin 8 (PHL) of the connector, the PLC processor is set to communicate at 19.2kbps. When PHL goes low (voltage from PV12 is removed), the communications speed of the PLC processor drops to 4800bps. Page 9

10 MODULAR CABLES: Diagrams shown thus far represent one-piece cables. The cable sets included with the Programming Software packages from Actron A.B. and Lighthouse PLCs, Inc., are modular. While the one piece cables may offer advantages in some situations, the modular design is especially effective if you are connecting to several different models of HITACHI programmable controllers. The modular design allows for fast change over from one model to the next. Please note that not all cables are delivered with all software packages. (See Footnote footnote #9) Page 10
