1 Macomb Intermediate School District Garfield Road Clinton Township, MI (586) Fax: (586) Oakland University-Macomb Master of Education in Early Childhood Education with ZA Endorsement Program Overview The Master of Education in Early Childhood Education program prepares professionals to work with children from birth through age eight in public and private schools and agency settings. It also provides training for the direction and evaluation of early childhood programs and the coordination of community resources for young children and families. The program combines theory with observation and participation in clinical, community and school practicum settings. This Oakland University program will be offered in a cohort format at Macomb Intermediate School District in Clinton Township. Students will complete requirements for the Early Childhood Endorsement and the Master of Education in Early Childhood Education. Who Should Apply? Certified teachers or other individuals seeking training in the direction and evaluation of early childhood programs and the coordination of community resources for young children and families. Admissions Criteria Minimum criteria for acceptance into the program are: 1. An undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (applicants who do not meet this standard may be considered for conditional admit, but will be required to achieve a grade of 3.0 or above for the first 12 credit hours) 2. Completion of a minimum of 24 semester credit hours at the undergraduate or graduate level in education, humanities, social sciences, health or an appropriate related field (this requirement is carefully weighed by the department s faculty admissions committees). Note: Admission is selective. Meeting minimum criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Degree Requirements To fulfill the degree requirements, the student must complete the planned program of credits, with a GPA of 3.0 or above within the six-year period allowed for the degree. Students must apply to graduate by the deadlines set by the university to be eligible for graduation.

Above schedule is tentative and a Petition of Exception is required for approval of an equivalent course not listed here. 2. Early Childhood Endorsement (ZA) is available to teachers who hold a current elementary teaching certificate. Students seeking a ZA endorsement must complete a Practicum with young children. Those students who elect to continue their graduate studies beyond the endorsement to obtain a Master's degree will complete the degree with 38 credits, reflecting the addition of the 2 credit endorsement practicum, EC546, Practicum in Early Childhood.

3 Oakland University-Macomb Master of Education in Early Childhood Education with ZA Endorsement Endorsement Information Overview An endorsement is a credential added to a teaching certificate which allows an individual to teach in a given categorical area. Endorsement in Early Childhood Education: Only students who hold a valid Michigan elementary teaching certificate are eligible to receive the early childhood endorsement. Process for Applying for Endorsement Fill out an application online. The form is available at Look under Certification Renewal and click on Application Forms Under application forms, click on additional endorsements Complete the form and submit application to address given on that form. OU will verify the information and send it to the State. The State will bill you, and when you pay the bill, the endorsement will be added to your certificate. Your certificate need so to be current to add the endorsement. If it is not, then you need to apply for that renewal and the Early Childhood Endorsement at the same time. 4 Oakland University-Macomb Master of Education in Early Childhood Education with ZA Endorsement Practicum Information Description As part of the requirements towards completing the endorsement, Michigan Department of Education requires that all students seeking an Endorsement in Early Childhood complete 300 hours of guided practicum with children birth to age eight. These 300 hours can be in two of the three age categories determined by the State. The three age categories include infants and toddlers, preschool age and early elementary. OU will count 200 hours of student teaching in an elementary (K-3) setting as partial fulfillment of the 300 hours requirement. You will be given a form on the first class to document your experiences with children. In addition, Oakland will provide approximately hours of supervised practicum in EC 546 Practicum in Early Childhood. EC 546 is a two-credit practicum. Students are placed in approved sites and work with Infants/Toddlers or Preschool age children for two full weeks, 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Students are also expected to attend an orientation before they begin their practicum. Practicum dates and orientation dates will be provided. According to State regulations, adults working with children need: 1. Health Appraisal and Test for Tuberculosis Form (TB test valid for one year) 2. Family Independence Agency (FIA) Clearance 3. Employee Statement The test for tuberculosis, the Health Appraisal Form and the FIA Form need to be completed by the practicum orientation date. Failure to do so can jeopardize participation in the practicum. The supervised practicum can only be completed at sites identified and approved by Oakland. You will be informed of site options closer to the practicum.
