1 TEACHING MAT MASTER OF ARTS TEACHING
2 WHY EARN AN MATSPECIALIZATION? Early Childhood Education The MAT Early Childhood Education degree program is ideal for teachers wishing to specialize in Early Childhood Education (birth through age 8). Those who enroll in this program will have the potential to gain new ideas for current best practices of teaching and developing skills for reaching all young children and working with their families. This program is also available to individuals who are not certified teachers, but who are interested in obtaining a master s degree in Early Childhood Education. This program is supported by highly qualified faculty who provide an excellent combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. Classes are offered in an online or hybrid format with the exception of TE 598, which involves a three week on-site teaching experience during the spring semester. (36 credits) An Early Childhood Endorsement for teaching children ages birth to 8 is also available for individuals who would like to add the "ZS" endorsement to their elementary education teaching certificate. K-12 Literacy Specialist The MAT K-12 Literacy Specialist degree program is ideal for classroom teachers seeking a planned program for earning a professional teaching certificate and preparing to qualify for the Michigan Department of Education Reading Specialist Endorsement (BA). Those who enroll in this program will research and implement current best practices in literacy education, develop skills for addressing the needs of all students, and build confidence as literacy leaders at the school, district, and community level. Courses integrate theory with practice to provide multiple opportunities for working with peers while implementing instructional and assessment strategies in the classroom and in a clinical setting. (36 credits) Special Education The MAT Special Education program is an ideal degree program for classroom teachers who wish to pursue teaching in the area of special education. Those who enroll in this program will have the potential to build confidence in teaching, gain new ideas for current best practices of teaching, develop skills for reaching all students, and share ideas with other professionals in the field. This program is supported by highly qualified faculty who provide an excellent combination of theoretical and practical knowledge. (38 credits) Additionally, certified teachers (elementary or secondary) may receive an endorsement to teach in Special Education programs requiring approval in either Cognitive Impairments, Learning Disabilities, Emotional Impairments, or Autism Spectrum Disorder by completing the required courses within the endorsement program. Michigan Special Education Administrative Rules require teachers to complete a minimum of 30 credits and 10 weeks of student teaching for initial special education endorsements and 30 credits (half of which must be unduplicated credits) with 180 hours of practical experience for each additional endorsement. For additional information on these programs, interested applicants should schedule an appointment with a certification advisor in the College of Education.
3 MEET Terri Haswell Terri Haswell s higher education journey started with SVSU and has remained with SVSU through her pursuit of her undergraduate degree and well as various certifications, endorsements, an education specialist directorship and a special education Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). She feels well prepared for the challenges that face her as principal of the Millet Learning Center, a school focused on students with moderate to severe performance challenges who range in age from As a non-traditional student, Terri also encourages students at all stages of their careers to entertain the possibilities of going back to school or adding credentials. I m proof that it s never too late. When asked why she would recommend SVSU to both education undergraduate and graduate students, Terri laughs and says, I know it sounds like a commercial, but I think I had a quality education at an affordable price. She adds that the graduate program faculty have high expectations, but they made us think and I was better [for the experience].
4 MASTER OF ARTS IN TE The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program provides opportunities for academic preparation and professional renewal for practicing educators. This program affords students opportunities to increase knowledge and understanding of the learning process, as well as expand their repertoire of teaching methods and skills.
