Best Delegate Best Delegate is an international education organization dedicated to helping students and teachers around the world find success in Model United Nations. The Diplomacy Fellowship is a paid opportunity for top university graduates or students at the pinnacle of their Model UN career to give back their experience and make a difference in the lives of future leaders by serving on the staff of the Best Delegate Model UN Summer Programs.

2 Diplomacy Fellowship The Diplomacy Fellowship is a paid seven-week summer fellowship for top university graduates or students with significant Model UN achievements, leadership experience, and interest in educating the next generation of student leaders. Diplomacy Fellows will be trained to teach high school students, middle school students, or educators during the Best Delegate Model UN Summer Programs held in university campuses throughout North America. The fellowship term is from June 17 - August 2, Diplomacy Fellows must be available during the entire fellowship term. All Diplomacy Fellows will start in Washington DC for training and to teach the first residential summer program. Afterward, Diplomacy Fellows will be assigned to travel in small teams to teach at residential or commuter programs held in different cities throughout North America. The Diplomacy Fellowship will cover travel costs, accommodations, and some meals throughout the fellowship period; see the Benefits section for more details. Teaching will take place every weekday of the residential or commuter programs and typical working hours will be from 8am-5pm. Staff may occasionally be assigned to help cover a weekday evening or the check-in or checkout process during the weekends of the residential programs. There will be at least a day off between programs. A possible schedule could look like the itinerary below, but assignments to specific programs and locations will be given after acceptance into the Diplomacy Fellowship. It will also be a fun and very rewarding experience as Diplomacy Fellows have personally and professionally grown over the summer to learn how to make a lasting difference in the lives of future leaders. The Diplomacy Fellowship is ideal for those who want to eventually pursue a career in education, public diplomacy, international relations, non-profit work, or business management.

3 Responsibilities Diplomacy Fellows will be responsible for classroom teaching and small group coaching at the high school and middle school levels at the Best Delegate Model UN Summer Programs. A typical day during the program would include lectures and demonstrations on particular leadership skills or topics followed by small group practice sessions, discussion sections, or activities. On most days, the lessons will be tied together through a Model UN simulation, and time will be spent on individual student evaluation and feedback. Specifically, the responsibilities include: Leading public speaking practice sessions. Guiding students during research labs, providing feedback on position papers, and conducting Socratic questioning on students research and solutions. Chairing practice committees and providing feedback on delegate performance. Facilitating a fun and educational environment through mentoring and icebreakers. Providing supervision and safety throughout the program. Diplomacy Fellows will be assigned to at least one residential or advanced program during their six weeks of teaching. These programs involve more advanced curriculum such as creating a campaign for a NGO, chair training, or simulations of crisis committees. These programs will also require rotational responsibilities with evening programming and supervision in the dormitories until student curfew. Individual student evaluation and feedback will be highly emphasized at these programs. Therefore, the additional responsibilities for residential or advanced programs could include: Providing guidance on the NGO project. Designing and executing pedagogically sound crisis committees. Holding office hours for intensive individual feedback. Leading evening programming or social events. Late night supervision on a rotational basis. Diplomacy Fellows will receive training on professional techniques in classroom teaching, skill building, coaching, and classroom management. Diplomacy Fellows will also be trained on global Model UN standards in preparation for their responsibilities. The goal is for all Diplomacy Fellows to deliver the highest quality educational experience at the Best Delegate standard.

4 Qualifications The Diplomacy Fellowship is a competitive program that seeks to recruit Best Delegates who are capable of bringing out the best in other highly talented and passionate delegates. Applicants should demonstrate the following criteria: Minimum Background Currently attending or graduated from a top-tier university. Minimum age of applicants is 18 years old. Citizens or residents of the United States or Canada are preferred; applicants must not require sponsorship for a visa to visit either country during the fellowship term. MUN and Classroom Experience Demonstrated track record of winning awards as a delegate with preference given to those who are part of a top-ranked university Model UN travel team. Experience with classroom teaching or lesson planning is highly preferred, and experience training a travel team or with outreach programs is also preferred. Experience chairing committees as a university student and expertise in North American procedure is required. Knowledge of THIMUN or UN4MUN procedure is a plus. Past experience as a participant in the North America high school circuit, particularly for a top-ranked travel team, is a plus. Experience working or attending summer programs in the past is a plus. Skills and Style Understands how to deliver a high quality educational experience to students. Ability to explain complex concepts in simple, organized frameworks or formulas. Research, writing, and editing skills must be at the top-tier university level or better. Confident and skilled in prepared and impromptu public speaking. Familiarity with teaching social skills and diplomatic behavior to younger students. Can share experiences in college admissions, college life, and college Model UN. Enjoy working with students and possesses a fun and engaging personality. Maturity to respond to behavioral or safety issues and other liabilities.

5 Benefits Benefits for the Diplomacy Fellowship include: Stipend: $3500 fellowship stipend. Travel: Travel costs will be covered if originating from a major city in the USA or Canada to the beginning of the fellowship in Washington DC. Travel costs between program cities during the Fellowship term will be covered. Travel costs will be covered if departing from the end of the program to a major city in the USA or Canada. Accommodations: Accommodations will be provided throughout the fellowship term starting with check-in on June 17 th and checkout on August 2 nd. Meals: Lunch is provided on every teaching day. Breakfast and dinner are also provided during the residential teaching days. All other meals will be on your own. Certification: Best Delegate Trainer Certification.
