24 GENERAL NOTES 1. #298E Elastomeric Emulsion may be used in place of #298 Emulsion in most systems and details. 2. Tobacco Staining: For best results, emulsion surfaced roofs should be washed prior to the application of the reflective coating. Water soluble oils and residues are present in all asphalt products. These compounds can form a brownish film on the surface of the new roof membrane. This is known as tobacco juice or tobacco staining. This residue when dissolved by dews and other moisture can collect into depressions or bird baths concentrating heavy amounts of the substance in these areas. If not cleaned off first this can cause lack of adhesion of the reflective coating. The amount of the residue that is present can vary depending upon the asphalt and weather conditions. When heavy amounts of this residue are present they should be washed off of the roof surface. It is common that a small amount of tobacco staining may still be visible especially in the white ElastaHyde even after washing. This will not harm the coating and is not permanent. It will wash away during rains. 3. ElastaHyde : To increase performance and prolong the life of ElastaHyde acrylic coating on emulsion surfaced roofs (especially in ponding areas) we provide the following recommendations: a. Embed the top ply (or an extra ply) of polyester in emulsion and broom in well to insure complete attachment with no voids. Leave the surface of the polyester uncoated and allow to completely dry. Apply the ElastaHyde to the polyester surface per specifications adding ½ gallon per square to the amount specified. b. On GlasShield or other smooth emulsion surfaced membranes; In areas around drains, valleys or any ponding areas, embed 1 ply of polyester directly into the ElastaHyde. Add an additional 1 gallon per square to the amount specified in these areas. Extend the polyester at least 6 inches beyond the perimeter of the ponding area. c. Allow ElastaHyde to dry completely before it is exposed to any moisture. Stop application early in the day in cool weather. ElastaHyde will dry and cure more quickly if it is applied with high pressure spray equipment. 4. #525 SilverWhite is a water based elastomeric aluminum coating. Best results are achieved when it is applied by spray. SilverWhite will perform fine when it is brushed or rolled but it is much brighter when it is sprayed. If SilverWhite is to be brushed or rolled it is recommended that #530 SilverWhite roller grade be used. 5. #800 Elastic Cement is a water based product and must dry through dehydration. It should only be used on surface details. It should not be used under flanges or anywhere it cannot dry by evaporation. It should not be used to make repairs or dry in a roof if rain or wet weather is expected within 48 hours. #800 should not be applied in a thickness greater than 3/16 inch in one application. If thicker applications are required, apply in multiple coats. 6. Polyester Fabric: Be sure polyester is applied directly into wet emulsion or coating. Do not allow the coating to skin over. Broom the polyester well to achieve complete contact with the coating leaving no voids between the polyester and the coating. If voids are found (larger than 2 to 3 inches) after the coating system has dried they can be cut out with an extra ply of polyester applied to the area of the void. Small voids can be addressed with and extra ply only. Avoid wrinkles in the polyester. If wrinkles occur fold flat and embed well into wet coating. If coating has dried then press flat or cut out wrinkle and apply an extra ply of polyester to the area of the wrinkle. Small fish mouths can be addressed using #800 elastic cement to fill the void. Avoid walking on the polyester while coating is wet. This will cause displacement of the coating leaving a void under the fabric. Page N-1

25 7. Gravel Surfaced Roofs: When Western Colloid Fluid Applied Reinforced Roofing systems are applied over existing gravel surfaced roofs the following recommendations should be observed: a. Use a soft style polyester fabric as reinforcement to better conform to the irregularities of the graves surface. b. The gravel may be spudded to the membrane prior to the application of the membrane. Make repairs to the membrane if damaged by spudding or add an extra ply of polyester to the damaged areas. c. If the gravel is not spudded then apply additional emulsion to the cleaned gravel surface as a base / flood coat. The amount of emulsion required will vary depending on the size and amount of gravel still embedded. The amount may range from 8 to 12 gallons per square. Allow the flood coat to completely dry prior to the application of the system. Some mud cracking of the flood coat should be expected and is acceptable. Note...The surface will not be completely smooth after the flood coat. The irregularities of the gravel surface will still be visible but the soft polyester fabric should conform to this surface. d. GlasShield (chopped glass and emulsion) may be applied to the cleaned gravel surface as a base / flood coat. This option adds extra protection and cushioning from the gravel surface as well as extra strength to the entire system. Allow the flood coat to completely dry prior to the application of the system. 8. #298 Asphalt Emulsion s drying time varies depending upon the application rate, temperature, humidity and air movement. With high quality, properly emulsified clay emulsion the complete drying of the product is also the curing of the product. Once the water leaves the product the asphalt molecules that were in suspension, link up and form a solid matrix. This is unlike other coatings such as acrylics that initially dry but then must cure (or coalesce) over a longer period of time (up to 2 weeks) or asphalt cutbacks (solvent based) that must allow the solvents to migrate out over a period of 1 to 6 months. Historically it was believed that asphalt emulsion should cure for 30 or more days before it could be top coated. This was generally accepted based on other asphalt products that required that amount of time to cure before coating. Products like hot (oxidized) asphalt that will migrate and flow for a period of time and solvent based asphalt that must flash off and stabilize before it can be coated. Our Asphalt Emulsion can be coated as soon as it has thoroughly dried. After it has dried it is stable and will not flow or migrate. In California s warm weather conditions, a 3 to 10 gallon application should dry and be coatable in 24 to 48 hours. A heavier application of 10 to 16 gallons may need 2 to 4 days before it can be coated. Cooler winter months will add 2 to 4 days to these times. Other conditions such as heavy dews, fog and overcast skies can also slow the drying time of the emulsion. If #298 Emulsion sits exposed for a long period of time (more than 30 days) it should be power washed before coating. If it is exposed for an even longer period and the surface has started to oxidize it will require a light recoat of emulsion before the reflective coating can be applied. If #298 Asphalt Emulsion is applied in one application of 6 gallons per square or more it may mud-crack. These mud-cracks occur as the product shrinks when it dries. They can be easily touched up by applying another coat of #298 over the effected area. When #289 Asphalt Emulsion is applied with strands of chopped glass embedded in it ( GlasShield ), it can be applied in much greater application amounts. These amounts can range from 7 to 16 gallons per square in one application without mudcracking. Page N-2
