5 Elements of a Good Story: 1. Characters 2. Setting 3. Conflict 4. Plot/ Main Events 5. Resolution
Where we re going: The students will record the main characters, events, causes, and outcome of the 1st Punic War using a story-board worksheet. The students will illustrate their understanding by creating a storyboard poster depicting the important information from their worksheet. The students will characterize the actions of the Romans during the 1st Punic War as aggressive or defensive using text-evidence and summarize their conclusion on a take-away slip.
Today s Story Title: 1st Punic War
Characters
The Story Begins:
Team 1: Rome At this point in our story, if you were asked to relate Rome to a type of person in school who would it be? Strong Seemingly Invincible Thought the world was theirs to have!
Rome s Motto: Mare Nostrum - Our Sea
Team 2: Carthaginians Looking at the map, and where Carthage is located, what do you think their main source of income was? *Coastal town- Sea trade *Controlled trade in the western Mediterranean *Carthaginian trading empire spread to islands of Corsica, Sardinia, and western Sicily, along with southern Iberian peninsula (modern- day Spain) Present-day Tunisia
Rome s Strengths Vs. Carthage Strengths --VS-- Rome Carthage
Worksheet: Characters: 1. Romans Conquered all Italy Mare Nostrum Strong Army of Loyal Soldiers 2. Carthaginians Sea traders Expand Trade Strong Navy (paid)
Setting:
Worksheet: Setting- Mediterranean Sea Italy and N.E. Africa
Conflict:
The Fun Begins: Put your one finger on Carthage. Put another finger on Rome. Look between your fingers, what do you see that may be of interest to you as Rome or Carthage?
Oh NO you didn t Carthage wants to take over Sicily for Trade Rome wants to take Sicily to ensure over Mare Mare Nostrum and to keep power
Who will win when you re playing in this?
Be the General: You are Rome s General... what do you do to prepare? Three Ideas:
Main Events:
1. CHEATERS! Corvus- Retractable Plank- Boarding Bridge Made the sea battle a land battle!
The Corvus
2. Let the Battle Begin: *260 B.C.- Battle of Mylae: First naval battle. Romans destroyed the men on the ships and took the ships for their own. Romans Win!
Summary:
Go Men Go! *Romans invade Northern Africa B.C Bad luck happens for the Romans... a storm comes through and destroys almost the entire Roman navy The Roman army now is stranded in the desert by themselves, and they die... Carthaginians destroy them. Stalemate until around 240 B.C. the war is becoming a war of attrition because they are all running out of money/ financial problems. Who can hold out the longest
3. A few years later... * 240 B.C Roman gov t raises taxes enough, rebuilds the army! * Loyal Army! * Vs: * 242 B.C Carthage is virtually bankrupt-- no army (they leave cause they re not getting paid) *Paid Army= Army of Mercenaries
Worksheet: Main Events: 1. Corvus: (Rome s advantage) boarding plank that connects two boats together so a naval battle becomes a land battle-- one-to-one combat 2. Battle of Mylae 260 B.C: Rome wins using the Corvus. Invade in N.E. Africa 3. Stalemate until 240 B.C.: No one has any money! Rome finally raises enough money for their army.
Resolution:
And the winner is... * Romans win the 1 st Punic War in 241 B.C
Give us your money... *Rome received: * Land: * 3,200 Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia talents ($3.5 million)--this keeps Carthage from re-arming
Worksheet Resolution: Rome received: 1. Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia 2. 3,200 talents ($3.5 million)
Before vs. After After Before
Extended Thinking: Opinion Question: Was the 1st Punic War aggressive or defensive in the eyes of the Romans? Why?
Group Pictorial Story Board: Directions: 1. Split into groups of Create one picture with your group using poster board and colored markers of the theme of a good story (plot, characters etc) assigned to your group. 3. Come together and share why you drew what you did.
