1 Sichuan University Academic Inquiries: Phone: (+86) Sichuan University Financial Accounting Course Number:ACC 201 Credits: 3.0 Contact Hours: 45 Time: June 13 th July 1 st, 2016 Instructor: Raj Garg Home Institution: Indiana University of Pennsylvania Office Hours: TBD and by appointment garg@iup.edu TEXTBOOK: Financial and Managerial Accounting, Custom Edition for IUP, Pearson with access code for CourseCompass/MyAccountingLab. Students will have to purchase MyAccounting Lab code to access the Lab. The cost of this online software is $60 per person. I. Catalog Description Introduction to the complete accounting cycle for service and merchandising forms, including the recording of transactions through journal entries and the preparation of the income statement, statement of retained earnings, and balance sheet. The course will emphasize a user s perspective in regard to transactions pertaining to: cash, receivables, inventories, long-lived assets, current and long-term liabilities, and equity accounts. II. Course Objectives 1. Students will learn the process of identifying, measuring and recording transactions in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, including the preparation of basic journal entries and financial statements. 2. Students will learn how financial accounting information is used by external decision makers, such as creditors and investors. 3. Students will understand the role of financial accounting information in business organizations as well as in other business disciplines. 4. Students will comprehend the concepts pertaining to corporate social responsibility and ethical behavior. III. Course Guidelines a) Obtain textbook and the access code for CourseCompass/MyAccountingLab immediately. b) Attendance is very important to your understanding of the course material. c) You should read each chapter thoroughly and attempt the exercises BEFORE they are discussed in class. Class discussions will be more meaningful if you have studied in advance. d) Your success in the course depends on your ability to work the exercises and problems at the end of the
2 chapter and the quizzes and homework assigned. e) You must keep up-to-date in this course. It is easy to keep up with accounting but quite impossible to catch-up. You should allow study and preparation time for this course each day. If you are having difficulty please get help at the very beginning of the semester. f) EXAMS will be administered after the completion of every three to four chapters. In-class Examinations will consist of TWO parts. The first part will consist of multiple-choice questions and the second part will consist of one or more problems. The first part will consist of 65-70% of the grade and the second part, the remaining 30-35%. All examinations are closed book, closed notes tests. g) Any student who misses a test and is unable to provide the instructor with a valid excuse will receive a grade of 0 (zero) for the test. The excuse must cover the day and time of the missed examination. MAKE-UPS WILL NOT BE GIVEN FOR MISSED EXAMS EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF EXTREME CIRCUMSTANCES. If a student misses a scheduled examination, it is the student's responsibility to immediately contact the instructor and to present a valid excuse. Ideally, the student should notify the instructor in advance if s/he knows that s/he will miss the test. Arrangements will then be made for a make-up test, which will be administered at the instructor's convenience. MAKE-UP TESTS WHEN ALLOWED HAVE TO BE TAKEN WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE MISSED EXAM. After this period is over students do not have the option of making up the missed exam and will automatically get a zero on the test. There will be no EXCEPTIONS to this rule. h) ALL HOMEWORK problems should be done online in MyAccountingLab and submitted on or before the due date (usually the class period after completion of the chapter) for credit. Homework submitted late will not receive any credit. i) Please turn off your cell phones before coming to class or place them in the silent mode. j) Please understand that tardiness of any kind will not be tolerated in class. You are expected to be present in class on time and stay for the entire duration of the class period. If for some reason you wish to be excused during class, please ask for the instructor s permission before leaving class. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from adhering to this policy, please bring a doctor s certificate to that effect to the instructor to document your excuse. Disruptions of any kind during the class period will not be tolerated and you may be asked to leave the class. k) Please review your course on a regular basis. This is your contract for the course. III. Evaluation Procedure Exam 1 (Chapters 1, 2, & 3) 20% Exam 2 (Chapters 4, 5, & 6) 20% Final Exam (Chapters 7, 8, 9, and 10) 20% Homework 15% Quizzes 15% CSR and Ethics Post Quiz 10% Total 100 % Grading scale A = 90% and above B = 80% and above but below 90% C = 70% and above but below 80% D = 60% and above but below 70% F = Below 60% V.
