1 American Bikers for Awareness, Training & Education NEWSLETTER December 2014 NEXT GENERAL MEETING January 13, LIABATE( )

2 A B A T E is American Bikers for Awareness, Training & Education The main purpose of the ABATE organization is to work toward continued freedom of the road by insuring that motorcyclist's point of view is presented to our legislators and to promote motorcycle safety, rider education and awareness. We are trying to alleviate the very real possibility of "Big Brother Government". We encourage all our members to be informed registered voters. We write letters to our elected officials and stay aware of what is going on with motorcycle legislation, education, and other transportation issues. 4 This concludes our first year as OUR OWN organization! I have to admit that I am very proud of what we were able to pull off in such a short time. I knew in my heart that it would be the best thing for Long Island riders if we left NY ABATE and established our own LI ABATE but it was a very risky move because if we failed there would be NO representation for riders on Long Island! That was a lot of pressure for all of us Officers because we stood before you and asked you to trust us in this new venture. We had 550 members as a chapter of NY ABATE but we had to start LI ABATE with no members and hope that many of you chose to make the move with us. We also had to hope that no one attempted to keep the NY Chapter operating because then there would have been 2 similarly named groups that would have been very confusing and hampered our success. Ultimately, it was a unanimous decision for everyone to crossover and say goodbye (or good riddance) to NY ABATE. Secretly I had hoped LI ABATE would grow to the same 550 members by the end of the first year. You have no idea what a relief it was for us to not only have reached 550 members within the first year but to have reached 1,100 members! That tells me that we made the right move and that you agreed by joining and supporting the new LI ABATE! Personally, I can t thank you enough for that! Nancy is working on publishing a special edition of our newsletter which will be out soon. It is a collection of events of LI ABATE in its first year. As we go about our everyday business of ABATE we tend to forget things that occurred thru the year but thinking back about the year, we did some cool stuff. And the best part is that so many volunteers stepped up to participate that it made it easy and fun for all during the events. Now that 2014 is over, it s time to focus on 2015! We are starting the year with 1,100 members so I can t see any reason that we can t at least match what we did this year. Therefore my goal for 2015 is that we grow to 2,500 members! It might sound difficult but if everyone brings in just 1 member we would only need 300 more. So if you believe in LI ABATE and want to see it grow in clout and influence, grab a friend or spouse or stranger and get them to sign up! Its only $20 per year and it s an investment in YOUR future riding conditions! Just imagine the clout as we walk into a town board meeting to discuss motorcycle related issues and we state that we are representing 2,500 riders! One voice alone will always be ignored by politicians, but one large, united voice of thousands will always be heard and sometimes listened to. continued to next page 4

5 I want to thank the entire 2014 Board who put in so much time and effort in order for us to get where we are! I also want to thank the other 1,099 of you for believing in and supporting Long Island ABATE! What is so amazing to me is that EVERYTHING we did this year was always unanimous among the 100 or so members at every monthly meeting! EVE- RY vote was unanimous and there was no one trying to suit themselves over the organization. Every member put LI ABATE first and it paid off! THANK YOU ALL! As I m writing this, a song just came on by Blackberry Smoke that is so appropriate. It expresses how I feel about going into the new year with a new list of goals to be accomplished. The song is called I feel a good one coming on! I couldn t have said it any better! Once again, THANK YOU for all your support and allowing me to stay on for another year! Jim Barr 5

14 THANK YOU LONG ISLAND ABATE Just want to take a moment and THANK the LI ABATE team and all those that help to make this a GREAT GROUP. Whoever thought that making a break from NYS ABATE and going out on our own would work? Almost as silly as when we broke away from England years back. Not only did it work, but it grew and is still growing. The people that make up the LI ABATE board have done a super job in getting this show on track and out to the public. After being a member for over 20 years it has finally become A MOTORCYCLE RIGHTS ORGANIZATION. The events that are held take a tremendous amount of work from those that step up and get involved, so THANK YOU. If ANY member wants to come forward and help, PLEASE speak up. Not all things require a full commitment or a title. Anyone can help at meetings, rides and attending events as well as PROMOTING LONG ISLAND ABATE and signing up new members. REMEMBER, the more members, the more we are heard and that PROTECTS YOUR RIGHTS as a RIDER. Looking forward to a great 2015 with new blood and ideas that will keep it rolling and building speed and strength. Wishing all a HAPPY and SAFE HOLIDAY SEASON Steve Sorensen Steve s Motorcycle School, Inc. 14

30 As we wind down the comfortable time of year to ride, we approach a time of year and a season that we should leverage to cultivate the things most important, our family and our friends. When we ride our scoots, I believe we move in a place of self indulgence, mostly about us. What we feel, what we enjoy and that isn't a bad thing in and of itself, but when life becomes all about us it is a dangerous thing. So us here in the northeast, are almost forced by God to slow down, spend more time at home or with the people in our life and hopefully learn to appreciate and love them at a higher level. Being in the wind and on our ride is such a thrill and enjoyable lifestyle that it is to the detriment of all around us. It is like all things God created in its purest form to be good, but in our obsessing and overindulgence they become amaging and even deadly to other aspects of our life. It is holiday eason, Christmas time, a time that God sent his Son to show us how to love and appreciate one another, how caring and relationships are most healthy. A time of healing for some, if you allow it to happen, if not another year wasted. Peace on earth, good will towards all men (and women). Thank God He is in our corner of the world and forces us to hit the kill switch, put the kickstand down and practice those most valuable values. As we head into 2015 I pray we all take this time to cultivate what is truly important. For only in that will next year be different and better. Only with those things in line with what is healthy we enjoy to the utmost our 2015 and all the riding and adventure ahead. Then you will experience all the wonder God has for you in what we feel, see, smell and experience on the gift to humanity that is the motorcycle. God Bless, ride safe, God bless America and 30 Have a Blessed Christmas... Pastor Ski. Bikers for Christ and Chaplain

Old Business Motorcycle Only Checkpoints: On 9/28, a motorcycle only checkpoint was set up at exit 66 of the LIE. This checkpoint happened to be only 2.5 miles before the LIE exit for the large Land and Sea Motorcycle Run for Autism, which began at police headquarters in Yaphank. Lorenzo posted about this checkpoint on facebook. Within 20 minutes of learning about this, LI ABATE, also posted on facebook, ed all LI ABATE members and notified the presidents of the motorcycle clubs. We have learned that approximately 134 motorcycles were stopped and 57 tickets were written. (LI ABATE will be in Suffolk County Traffic Court on 12/1, the court appearance date on these tickets.) Jim wrote a letter to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and subsequently met with him on 9/30 about this issue. Jim also met with the new 36

37 Chief of Police and the Chief Deputy County Executive. He presented them with a packet outlining LI ABATE s objection to these checkpoints, past testimony at the Suffolk County Legislature regarding motorcycle only checkpoints and the past agreement to stop them. LI ABATE s position is that there MUST be probable cause for a motorcyclist to be pulled over, and not be pulled over just for riding a motorcycle. Both the Chief of Police, Jim Burke, and the Chief Deputy County Executive understood LI ABATE s position, and promised to work together to put an end to motorcycle only checkpoints. LI ABATE has been attending the arraignments and proceedings of those people who were involved in causing motorcycle accidents. We are lobbying elected officials to put pressure on the district attorney to increase charges and penalties in effort to hold drivers accountable. In the proceedings for Jacklynn Barkey, the driver who hit John Pesce, Jacklynn remains in jail since the July incident. She allegedly circumvented the breathalyzer lock in her car and was driving drunk at the time of the accident. The next court proceeding in this case will be December Cohalan Court Complex, Central Islip, in D-31 Judge Comacho. In the proceedings of Jason Monet, the driver who hit Sid / Enders MC, misdemeanor charges have been upgraded to 3 felonies. The next court proceeding in this case will be December Cohalan Court Complex, Central Islip, in D-31 Judge Comacho. Members, please check s, facebook, etc. for dates and locations of these proceedings and attend if at all possible. The presence by LI ABATE has been noticed by the district attorney in these cases. A strong presence from the motorcycle community is warranted in order for these cases not to be taken lightly and to hold these drivers fully accountable for their actions. NYS C.O.I.R., Coalition Of Independent Riders, is a registry of s in which you would be notified of issues relating to motorcycling and can take action, via , phone call, etc. to political officials. COIR is currently active in 37 states. All LI ABATE members are automatically registered in NYS COIR, as agreed upon at a previous membership meeting. If you object to being part of this data base, please let us know. You don t have to ride a motorcycle to be a part of COIR. It is for all who are concerned about the rights of motorcyclists. To register go to NewYorkCOIR@gmail.com, and write that you wish to register. Also like us on facebook at New York COIR. Only your address will be added to the registry. Not your name, address, or anything else. St. Mary s Food and Toy Run: Unfortunately it was a cold and very windy day and we had a low turnout, approximately 150 motorcycles. Through the generosity of the motorcycle community, however, we were still able to fill 2 pick-up trucks with food and toys, and collect $2,000 in donations Guest Speaker Motorcycle Mike, Personal Injury Attorney, spends a lot of time lobbying for an increase in minimum liability coverage. Mike states that 90% of motorcyclists do not have adequate insurance coverage. Motorcyclists do not have no-fault insurance coverage and must look toward their personal health insurance policy if they do get hurt in a motorcycle accident. Mike will speak again at a future membership meeting about the declaration page of insurance policies to help members determine if they have adequate insurance. He also stresses that it is important to have uninsured motorist coverage. 37
