2 The Hull Sproul Genealogy As gathered by S. B. Prouty February, 1910 Our mother, Esther Jane Hull Prouty, was born on February 21 st, 1837, on the plantation of Jacob Hull, near Moffatt s Creek, Rockbridge County, Virginia. Our mother and her brothers and sisters were members of, or were at least baptized in, the New Providence Presbyterian Church, 4 miles south of Moffatt s Creek, Virginia. At that time it was not considered respectable not to belong to the Presbyterian Church in that vicinity. The dates of baptism and acceptance into the church, of my mother and the entire Hull family, are to be found in the church records in the possession Mr. Tom Smiley, two miles south of Moffatt s Creek, Virginia. (December, 1909) Our Grandfather and Grandmother, Jacob Hull and Nancy Jane Hull, were accepted into he church and were baptized April 15, This was after they were married and had some children. Jacob Hull was a son of Old Peter Hull (who was a Revolutionary soldier,) and Mary Linkenfelter, (German), and who spoke the language. He owned hundred and hundred of acres of land on Walker s Creek and on and around Pisgah Mountain, or hill of Rockbridge County, Virginia. A Hull spring is still to be found in the vicinity. They had several children. Among whom were: 1. Jacob Hull, born Died April Phillip Hull. Married Betsy (?) Lived at Collierstown. 3. John Hull. Father of A. Y. Hull. 4. Peter Hull. He lived on Kerr s Creek, Virginia. Had three children: John, Anna and Pinkard Clay whose name was Peter but was changed to Pinkard Clay by legislature. John and Anna still live there probably. Pinkard Clay Hull (4) moved to Mississippi and married a widow, Mrs. Moore, who had two daughters by a former husband, Artie and Cora. This Artie Moore married Dr. John A. Hull, son of Jacob and Nancy. Mrs. Armstrong, of Santa Anna, California, is the granddaughter of Phillip Hull (2). Other of his children live near Collierstown, Va. Jacob Hull and Phillip Hull were millwrights, and built a grist mill on Moffatt s Creek, for Squire Billy Sproul, about the year While building the mill Jacob fell in love with Squire Billy Sproul s daughter, Nancy Jane, who afterwards became our grandmother, they were married in Their children were: 1. 6 3. John Herndon, Washington, D. C. office of the doorkeeper of the House of Representatives. A book of Genealogy of Virginia Families by Hayden contains information about the Hulls. Prouty - Hull-Sproul Genealogy doc 6 The Hull homestead is about two miles south of Moffatt s Creek, Virginia. Esther Jane Hull (Prouty) looked like her mother. The house built and lived in by Squire Bill Sproul, and the mill built for him by Jacob Hull are still standing. December The house is occupied by Mrs. John Lucas, just beyond Captain Tom Smiley. The mill is still running. Major Richard Hull came from Falmouth, near Fredericksburg. The young Major Hull was a faithful and brave soldier, and a favorite of General Washington. For these reasons he was excused for gambling, and saucing a superior officer. John was the father or the brother of Peter, who was the father of Jacob Hull of Walker s creed, Va., our grandfather. Some slight doubt exists as to the exact authenticity of this relationship, but it is probably correct. The Wm. Sproul, who came from Ireland in 1740, was of Scotch-Irish decent. Sidney Sproul (woman s name) his daughter was born in 1776, and was the grandmother of Mr. Hugh Beard of Moffatt s Creek, Virginia. Mr. Beard lives about a mile south of the Hull homestead. He is a very old man at this writing, December David East married Betsy Trotter (cousin of Nancy Jane Sproul). Their children were: 1. Cousin Sam East 2. Mary Sproul East (Cook) 3. Eight other children. Mary East married Jacky Beard, of Santa Fe, Missouri. Their children are: 1. Miss Este Beard (in 1910 age about 55). A teacher in Stanton, Virginia. 2. David East Beard, an elderly gentleman of Middlebrook, Va. Our grandmother s mother, Mrs. Sproul, was Esther beard before marriage. This was her first marriage. From all reports our grandfather, Jacob Hull, was a southern gentleman, and much averse to manual labor. Esther Jane Hull (afterwards Prouty) was baptized in the New Providence Presbyterian Church, August 21, Rev. James Morrison, Pastor. Levi Prouty, and three others, were received on examination and profession of their faith, August 2, 1856, into membership of the New Providence Presbyterian Church.

7 It is the opinion of the writer that the Wm. Sproul, who went to Tennessee, as stated by Miss Fanny Sproul of Middlebrook, Va., was the son of Squire Billy Sproul, instead of a brother of Uncle John Sproul, as she thought. Mr. Hugh Beard says that Squire Billy Sproul and Uncle John Sproul were half brothers. Mr. Tom Smiley is of the opinion that they were brothers. It is a fact that in 1838, when Squire Bill Sproul died, and his estate was divided between Nancy Jane Sproul, Wm. Sproul, and Samuel Sproul, the said Wm. Sproul moved to Tennessee, and Samuel Sproul moved to Texas. More of this later on. In 1859, Widow Nancy Jane Hull, sold to Wm. Smiley, 114 acres of land for $2, A part of this money Samuel B. Hull returned to collect after the war. On this land was located the mill. Wm. Smiley was the father of Captain Tom Smiley, Mrs. Mary Smiley Beard, and Miss Letitia (Tish) Smiley. In December 1909, Dr. S. B. Prouty was most cordially welcomed and entertained at the home of Captain Tom Smiley. At that time Mr. Smiley was 67 years old. Nancy Jane Sproul (Hull) was born in Augusta County, Va., August 11, Died in Johnson County, Missouri, July 2, Margaret Emily Hull, was born in Rockbridge County, Va., April 4, Married in Johnson County, Missouri, February 1, Died in Johnson County, Missouri, November 11, James Menifee Warren, was born in Lincoln County, Ku., August 17, Died in Johnson County, Missouri, November 11, Margaret Emily Hull and James Menifee Warren, were married as stated above in Johnson County, Missouri, September 27, Their children were as follows: 1. William Harlan Warren. Born August 5, 1872 in Johnson County. Died January 19, 1873 in Mazelhurst, Mississippi. 2. Ralph Warren. Born November 19, 1873 in Clayborn County, Mississippi. 3. Waldo Warren (Afterwards, with both parents consent took a middle name and became Waldo Pondray Warren) Born December 25, 1875 in Clayborn County, Mississippi. 4. Hugh Early Warren. Born May 24, 1878 in Johnson County, Missouri. In 1910, Ralph Warren was married, had six children, lived at 728 South 3 rd., Chichasha, Oklahoma. In 1910, Waldo Pondray Warren, lived at 50 Morningside East, New York City. His wife, Carrie Johnson Moore of Chicago. No children. In 1910, Hugh E. Warren, lived at Lookeba, Oklahoma. Married, second time. One child by second wife. Child named Carrie Louise. Prouty - Hull-Sproul Genealogy doc 7

8 Wm. Sproul, brother of Nancy Jane Sproul, moved to Tennessee, at or near Paris. His sons names were Alexander Brown Sproul and Horatio Sproul. And are there now, Alexander Brown Sproul had two daughters, one named Esther, for her great grandmother, (our great grandmother) Esther Beard Sproul wife of Old Squire Billy Sproul, father of Nancy Jane Sproul (Hull). Samuel Sproul, brother of Nancy Jane, moved to Texas. His oldest son, Wm. Sproul, was living near San Antonio, Texas when last heard of, His oldest daughter was named Esther, after grandmother. This Esther is now Mrs. James McCan, Overlade, Overlade County, Texas. Aunt Betsy, Mother, and Mrs. Squire Billy Sproul were sisters. Nancy Jane and Betsy, and daughter of the above sisters, would therefore be cousins. This Betsy ( ) married David East, parents of Mary East, who married Jacky Beard father of Estie Beard of Stanton, Va. The above sister of Mrs. Squire Billy Sproul could have been Mrs. (Beard) Trotter, and the Aunt Betsy above would have been Betsy Trotter. Mrs. Squire Billy Sproul raised Nancy Jane and Betsy together, and Aunt may have been a love name given to Betsy by Nancy s children. Mary East, Sam East, and Mary Sproul East Cook are brothers and sisters, and have Trotter relatives in Carroll County, Missouri, who are wealthy and influential people.
