8 Delta The Delta qualification The Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults The Delta is one of the most prestigious ELT qualifications in the world. Matthew Brigham, The Guardian Entry Requirements: > Minimum age 21 > A good academic background and initial teacher qualification preferred > A minimum of one year s full-time English language teaching experience (for Module 1) > Two years full-time experience teaching at a range of levels and contexts (Modules 2 and 3) This course is designed for experienced English language teachers who would like to develop new techniques and progress in their career. The Delta is a qualification that is a balance of theory and practice but will enhance candidates understanding of the English language, while examining in depth the principles of effective teaching and the practical skills required for teaching English. The Cambridge Delta is accredited by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) at level 7 on the National Qualifications Framework. This means the Delta is of a similar academic level to a Master s degree. To access Module 2, most candidates will already have completed Module 1. The Delta is made up of three modules and can be taken together or alone. Cambridge recognises each one separately so candidates can choose to do all or part of the programme but still be assured of a recognised certification. Completing all three modules successfully will lead to the full Diploma award. Module 1 Understanding language, methodology and resources for teaching This module allow participants to extend their background in knowledge and understanding of language, methodology and teaching resources. It also allows candidates to accredit prior learning and knowledge gained through teaching and experience. Module 2 Developing Professional Practice Module two looks at developing candidates further through focusing on classroom practice, deepening the understanding of language, skills, principles underlying methodologies and approaches. It also allows candidates with an MA in ELT/ ESOL or Applied Linguistics to gain more practical experience. Module 3 Extending practice and English language teaching specialisation This module focuses on specialisation. It is for candidates who already specialise but do not possess a formal qualification in the area of expertise or for candidates who want to develop an understanding of a specialist area but have no experience. It can also be used for candidates who already hold a Delta or a formal qualification in a specialism but wish to gain an understanding of a further specialism. Each module lasts eight and participants then have a further two to research and write the module assignments. Module 1 Introduction to Academic Management Module 2 Observation and Giving Feedback Module 3 Setting up INSETT > To develop skills in line-managing teachers > To gain a range of practical ideas and techniques to help candidates be a more effective academic manager > To network and share ideas and best practice with other academic managers throughout the world Assessment: Assessment is measured in two parts for this course. Firstly by maintaining an active participation rate level of 80% throughout the course. Secondly by submission of a 2,500 word assignment at the end of each module. Candidates typically have around six or more years of teaching experience and have some management responsibilities at a senior teacher level. It is also necessary to have access to an ELT institution for information gathering and research. The Diploma in Academic Management is for experienced academic managers and typically those operating at a senior level within their institution or are planning to move into a more senior position. The Diploma in Educational Management is credit-bearing towards the MSc in TESOL offered by Aston University. The course is made up of five modules. Modules One to Four last eight and Module Five lasts 4. Module 1 Managing Change Module 2 Effective Communication Module 3 Managing Customer Service Module 4 Business Management Module 5 Extended assignment Each module lasts eight and participants have a further two to research and write the module assignments for each Module. > To have a clear understanding of the more strategic aspects of academic management > To be equipped to function at senior management level > To undertake focused and supported research on a specific aspect of the candidate s organisation s operations Assessment: Assessment is measured in two parts for this course. A unique introduction to current research, theory and practice in English language teaching Students who are just starting out in a career teaching English as a foreign language, with a 2:1 degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject (such as English or a foreign language, Linguistics/Language, Communication, Psychology or a social science subject). This course is for teachers of primary or secondary school-age children, or adult learners. It is for subject specialist teachers who need to teach in English, or who want to add language teaching to their skill-set. Classroom assistants working in CLIL contexts may also take this course. CELT-P and CELT-S give English language teachers the opportunity to refresh and build on their knowledge and skills to get the best from their learners. The CELTA Trainer in Training programme with IH London is a 3-month course to become a Cambridge English CELTA Trainer. This consists of a full time 2-month course based at the London school followed by a 1-month online mentored programme. The training programme is for organisations who wish to train staff members in order build their capacity to run CELTA courses. Applicants for the training need to be approved as trainers in training by Cambridge English, meeting the minimum requirements: > 5 years varied current classroom based ELT experience in more than one context > Cambridge Delta Modules (One, Two and Three), the Cambridge DTEFLA, Cambridge English Delta or Trinity Dip TESOL. > Evidence of professional commitment e.g. involvement in staff development conference attendance and other training experience Applicants will usually also have: > Previous training experience especially at pre-service level > Experience of observation and feedback > 3 years post Delta level qualification experience. The programme follows the Cambridge English guidelines for trainers in training and involves intensive periods of observation, formal sessions, tasks and on-the-job practice. Approval as a Cambridge English CELTA trainer is only granted by Cambridge English on successful completion of the course and submission of portfolio work.
