Students gain practical experience of many forms of writing for the public including fiction, short story, poetry, drama, screenwriting and creative non-fiction. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad University of Central Oklahoma. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. English Literature English Literature covers themes from the early-medieval period to the present day. The programme introduces students to the genres of poetry, drama and the novel and also offered the opportunity to study the literature of the Renaissance, Romanticism, Realism and Modernism, Gender and Medieval Literature. Entry requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. Chinese-English Translation and Language Teaching The MA in Chinese-English Translation and Language Teaching is offered to Chinese students who are interested in pursuing a career in applied language skills, including translating and teaching English or Chinese as a foreign language. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.0. Teaching English as a Foreign Language Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is offered to students who wish to teach people whose first language is not English, to speak the language. Students can take the TKT Practical Certificate. TKT Practical is an internationally recognised teaching certificate and a test of professional practice for English language teachers. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5 (minimum of 6.0 in writing and 5.5 in other components). Welsh Writing in English This MA offers students innovative contexts in which to explore the emergence and development of the English language and literature of Wales, whilst also addressing that literature s political, gendered and literary dimensions. This unique programme is taught as part of the work of the Centre for Research into the English Literature and Language of Wales (CREW). Entry requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5.
4 Our Departments and Subjects History and Classics The History Department s research is ranked in the top-30 [27th] in the UK for research excellence and is top in Wales for research impact Our staff are members of the following research groups: Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Research (MEMO); Health, History and Culture (HHC); Richard Burton Centre for the Study of Wales (RBC) and Conflict and Commemoration (C&C). The newest group is Myrddin, a Welsh academic network devoted to the history and social study of science, technology and medicine KYKNOS is the Swansea and Lampeter Centre for Research on the Narrative Literatures of the Ancient World. It stimulates, co-ordinates and promotes research on the historiography and narrative literatures of ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Near East. We have close links with the Egypt Centre, a unique resource which houses thousands of archaeological objects, constituting one of the largest collections of Egyptian material culture in the Wales and the UK Staff in the department participate in and contribute to a wide variety of multi-partner research activities and programmes. The largest of these is History Research Wales, a network of 120 historians and 150 postgraduate students in Welsh higher education institutions that was created to foster and support young scholars, and to promote collaborative research We also engage actively with public history and heritage agendas, working with the National Museums and Galleries Wales, Cadw, Hereford Cathedral, and the Gwent Glamorgan Archaeological Trust Visit our website: Our Taught Masters Programmes Medieval Studies Medieval Studies covers Late Antiquity to the Renaissance, and from the British Isles and France to Italy and the Holy Land. Areas of particular expertise include gender, warfare, aristocratic culture and frontiers and borderlands. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. Early Modern History; Modern History and History The wide-ranging expertise of Swansea University s historians offers the study of British, European, American or Asian History. These MA programme allow students to study specific periods and explore the history of art and culture, empire, gender, politics, religion, sexuality and science. Entry requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. Ancient History and Classical Civilisation Ancient History and Classical Civilisation offers a range of topics related to the history and culture of the classical world, from the Mycenaean world to the later Roman Empire. The range of options allows students to specialise in history or literature, or to combine study of the two. Entry Requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. Ancient Egyptian Culture Ancient Egyptian Culture is a distinct programme focussing on ancient Egyptian history, language and material culture Entry Requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. Ancient Narrative Literature The MA in Ancient Narrative Literature is the first of its kind in the world. It draws on world-level expertise to explore the various types of narrative produced in ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. Entry Requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5.
5 Our Departments and Subjects Languages, Translation and Communication The Modern Languages and Translation department is ranked in the Top-30 (29th) for research excellence and ranked 7th in the UK for research impact Our impact focuses locally, nationally and internationally, in two main respects: Fostering cross-cultural knowledge and understanding, with benefits to: a) local participants in Latin American Association festivals; b) Wales-wide NGOs in the asylum and refugee sector; c) Waleswide school/college students and teachers through video seminars; d) UK and international publics through online projects, broadcast and print media and live appearances as experts; e) cultural associations with reach outside academia, through executive service, web mastering etc to the Friedrich Nietzsche Society, Société Marguerite Duras, British Comparative Literature Association Economic benefits to regional SMEs in language industries, and their wider industry clients: through language-learning and translation resource and software development, research collaboration, upskilling employees, and by fostering a vibrant and innovative translation studies environment Our staff are members of the following research centres: The Centre for the Comparative Study of the Americas (CECSAM); The Centre for Contemporary German Culture (CCGC) and the Language Research Centre (LRC) Media projects include: Digital Television and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Audiences in Wales Our Taught Masters Programmes MA Communication, Media Practice and PR The MA is taught by industry professionals with academic backgrounds and includes Professional Writing/ Journalism, Visual Communications and Media Design, Video and Documentary Making and PR, Branding and Promotion. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA Digital Media Digital Media examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies. Students study media theory, political and social theory and research tools in analysing and understanding digital media. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA International Journalism International Journalism develops the knowledge and understanding of the role of journalism in society. The course combines the teaching of practical skills and techniques of journalistic production. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA Erasmus Mundus Journalism, Media and Globalisation The Mundus-Journalism Master is a two-year, truly transnational degree providing a solid foundation for analysing and reporting global changes. Building on journalistic skills, the degree offers a unique combination of journalism, media studies and the social sciences. An international consortium of universities and media outlets work closely together to run the Mundus Journalism programme. Entry Requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA Professional Translation The MAPT belongs to the European Master s in Translation Network which currently has 54 members throughout Europe. The programme includes advanced translation work on general, administrative and technical text types, and training in industry-standard Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools. Work Experience is offered. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad. Entry Requirements: 2.1 or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in Translation and Interpreting The MA in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) is a specialised variant of Professional Translation, with special emphasis on interpreting skills. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bolognacompliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad.
6 Our Departments and Subjects Political and Cultural Studies Politics and International Studies is ranked 21st in the UK for research quality and ranked 20th in the UK for research impact Our staff are members of two research groups: political analysis and governance (PAG); and International Studies, Conflict and Security (ISCAS). These are complemented by a research centre, the Global Drug Policy Observatory, externally funded by the Open Society Foundations We have a strategy for research impact that has led to major global, national and sub-national impacts on public policy and professional organisations Postgraduate research students training is conducted through the politics and international relations, and language-based area studies pathways of the Wales ESRC Doctoral Training Centre. Visit our website: Our Masters Programmes MA in Development and Human Rights This programme includes development studies, politics, political theory and international law. It examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies and examines the comparatively new interface between Human Rights and International Development. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad at the University of the Philippines. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in Gender and Culture The MA examines the production, reproduction and transformation of gender in culture and society and studies gender and gender relations in politics, literature, culture, and history. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in International Relations This MA provides an understanding of the international system, key issues, the crucial actors, and alternative ways of analysing and interpreting the subject. Students have the opportunity to specialise in examining one specific area of the world: the Asia-Pacific. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A & M University. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in International Security & Development This MA introduces students to issues and debates within International Security, including both traditional security issues such as war and conflict and non-traditional issues such as economic security, environmental security, health, identity and migration. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in Politics The MA in Politics is designed to provide a high level training in the core components of contemporary political study. Students can focus on global, comparative and/or British politics as well as political theory and philosophy. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad at the University of the Philippines. MA in Public Policy The MA in Public Policy is designed to provide a high level training in the study of public policy and policy making at international, national and sub-state levels. It will develop your knowledge and skills for a career in public policy research, policy advice, lobbying, public sector management or journalism. The extended programme is a 240 credit (120 ECTS), Bologna-compliant programme (15-21 months) and Year 2 can be study abroad at the Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A & M University. Entry Requirements: 2.2 (average of 55% or above) or equivalent. IELTS 6.5. MA in War and Society War and Society is a collaborative, interdisciplinary MA Degree programme that utilises the range of research expertise, analysing war from political, social, cultural, technological, historical, military and media contexts. 8 Research Degrees The College of Arts and Humanities offers three distinct research degrees, each of which requires you to conduct original research on a specific topic: A PhD (100,000 word thesis; 3 years full-time - 6 years part-time) An MPhil (60,000 word thesis; 2 years full-time - 4 years part-time) An MA by Research (40,000 word thesis; 1 year full-time - 2 years part-time) Our research students are supervised by leading international scholars and have access to skills and training programmes at College and Institutional levels.
