2 Oregon s Part Time Workers There were 418, part time workers in 214. Usually work less than 35 hours per week Part time workers are more likely to be women. 62% of part time workers are women Teenage workers ages 16 to 19 are more likely to be part time. 9% of part time workers are teens (1% of FT workers) Not much difference in part time and full time workers by race and ethnicity. 2

3 Reasons for Working Part Time (Oregon) Of those who usually worked part time in 214, the reasons given were: Slack work or business conditions (13%) In school or training (18%) Other family or personal obligations (18%) Could only find part time work (11%) Retired or Social Security limit on earnings (8%) Childcare problems (2%) Other reasons (3%) Seasonal work, health and medical limitation, employers fulltime work week is less than 35 hours, and other reasons. 3

6 Involuntary Part Time Workers (Oregon) Much of the recession s increase in part time employment was among people who would rather be working full time, but their hours were cut or they were unable to find a full time job. These workers are part time for economic reasons and are sometimes referred to as involuntary part time workers. The number of involuntary part time workers in Oregon has fallen significantly since the recession ended. Involuntary part time workers were just 4.7% of total employment in August 216. Highest share was 9.2% in June 29 (worst of the recession) Lowest share was 3.9% in January 26 (previous expansion) 6
