2 Colour Theory Color Wheel Color Values Color Schemes

3 The Colour Wheel The color wheel fits together like a puzzle each color in a specific place. Being familiar with the colour wheel not only helps you mix colours when painting, but in adding colour to all your design creations.

4 Primary Colours Primary colours are not mixed from other elements and they generate all other colors. Red Yellow Blue

5 Secondary Colours By mixing two primary colours, a secondary colour is created. Red + Yellow = Orange Yellow + Blue = Green Blue + Red = Purple

6 Tertiary Colours Intermediate, or Tertiary, colors are created by mixing a primary and a secondary. red-orange yellow-orange yellow-green blue-green blue-purple red-purple

7 Colour Values Colour values are the lights and darks of a colour you create by using black and white ( neutrals ) with a colour. This makes hundreds of more colours from the basic 12 colours of the wheel. white + colour = tint colour + black = shade

8 Tints Tints are lightened colours. Always begin with white and add a bit of colour to the white until the desired tint is obtained. This is an example of a value scale for the tints of blue.

9 Shades Shades are darkened colours. Always begin with the colour and add just a bit of black at a time to get the desired shade of a colour. This is an example of a value scale for the shades of blue.

10 Neutral Colours The principles of colour mixing let us describe a variety of colours, but there are still many colours to explore. The neutral colours contain equal parts of each of the three primary colours. Black, off-black, white, off-white, gray and sometimes brown are considered "neutral.

11 Warm Colours Warm colours are found on the right side of the colour wheel. They are colours found in fire and the sun. Warm colours make objects look closer in a painting or drawing.

12 Warm Colour Samples Here are some samples of the use of warm colors - reds, oranges, yellows and greens.

13 Cool Colours Cool colours are found on the left side of the colour wheel. They are the colours found in snow and ice and tend to recede in a composition.

15 3 Basic Designs Hue The actual colour, such as red or green. A hue can be changed by adding tone, example - white to lighten, black to darken Chroma the intensity of the colour Tone the amount of black or white in a colour.

16 Colour Schemes Colour Schemes are a systematic way of using the colour wheel to put colours together Monochromatic Complementary Analogous Warm and cool.

17 Monochromatic Mono means one, chroma means colour monochromatic colour schemes have only one colour and its values. These non-objective paintings have a monochromatic color scheme - blue, yellow, red and the values (tints and shades) of blue, yellow and red.

18 Complementary Colours Complementary colours are opposite on the color wheel provided a high contrast - if you want to be noticed wear complementary colorus!

19 Complementary Colour Samples These pictures have complementary colors and their values.

20 Split-Complementary Colours Like complementary colours, split-complementary colours are also opposite each other, but include three or four colours, not just two. Split-complementary contains the actual colour (hue) and the two colours on either side of its complement.

21 Analogous Colours The analogous colour scheme is 3-5 colours adjacent to each other on the colour wheel. This combination of colours provides very little contrast.

23 Achromatic Colours Designating color perceived to have zero saturation and therefore no hue, such as neutral grays, white, or black
