3 This curriculum has been prepared on the basis of the $ Ministerial Order No. 338 of 6 May 2004 of the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation concerning Bachelor and Master study programmes at universities (uddannelsesbekendtgørelsen) and $ Ministerial Order No. 867 of 19 August 2004 concerning eamination at university study programmes (eksamensbekendtgørelsen) and $ Ministerial Order No. 231 of 22 March 2006 about changes in Ministerial Order concerning eamination at university study programmes (eksamensbekendtgørelsen) and $ Ministerial Order No. 931 of 5 October 2005 concerning joint education between Danish and foreign universities (Bekendtgørelse om parallelforløb og fællesuddannelse). The Board of European Studies may make eemptions owing to etraordinary circumstances to its own rules of the curriculum, which are laid down only by the university (supplementary regulations). 5 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 4 of 16 Ministerial Regulations 1. Terms of admission The admission requirement for the MSc in European Studies programme (cand.soc.) is the three-year Bachelor of Science in European Studies or another corresponding qualifying degree.

6 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 5 of Duration, title and content of the study programme 2.1 Duration of the study programme The duration of the MSc in European Studies programme is two years. 2.2 Title of the study programme The graduate who has completed the study programme is entitled to use the title Master of Social Sciences (European Studies) or Cand.soc. 2.3 Content of the study programme The Master s degree study programme is organised as series of modules. A module is a course or a group of courses, aimed at providing a full set of academic qualifications to the student, within a specified timescale stated in ECTS-points and which are passed by one or more eaminations, within specific eamination periods as defined in the curriculum. 60 ECTS-points are equivalent to a student s full-time work in one year. The study programme is officially set to two years workload. One year s workload is equivalent to a student s full-time work in one year. 2.4 Joint education between University of Southern Denmark and University of Flensburg In a study programme that is offered as joint education with a foreign university study activities that comprise at least one third of total ECTS, i.e. 40 ECTS in a master programme, have to take place at the University of Southern Denmark. 2.5 Credit transfer Relevant courses completed at other institutions are equated with corresponding courses, and will be transferred with grades according to the Danish 7-point grading scale or with the assessment passed/not passed. Participation in foreign study activities must not comprise more than 60 ECTS. Credit transfers must be approved by the Board of European Studies.

7 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 6 of Eaminations and requirements for passing 3.1 Assessment At least 1/3 of the study programme must be evaluated by an eternal eaminer and graded according to the Danish 7-point grading scale. No more than 1/3 of the study programme may be evaluated as passed/not passed. 3.2 Average and minimum grades In calculating the eamination average each eamination, evaluated according to the Danish 7-point grading scale, is assigned a weight (see section 5.4). The courses must be passed separately with a grade of at least 0.2 or with the assessment passed. 3.3 Re-eamination Eaminations are considered passed if the student earns a Pass or a grade of at least 0.2, thus re-eamination is not allowed. 3.4 Number of eamination attempts The student may only sit an eamination in the same course three times. The university may allow the student to sit an eamination four or five times under eceptional circumstances. Determination of what constitutes eceptional circumstances is not affected by assessments of academic ability. The student can request participation of a second eaminer when sitting a third, fourth and fifth eamination when the eamination is internal, assessed only by eaminer. In eceptional cases the university may eempt for more than five eamination attempts, especially when the student only needs to pass one single eamination to graduate. 3.5 Time limit for completing the study programme In the curriculum the university can stipulate the latest date after enrolment on which the student must have completed the Master s Degree study programme

Supplementary terms of admission 4.1 Other diplomas of post-secondary education Applicants who are not in possession of the relevant admission requirements but who on the basis of other diplomas of post-secondary education are considered to be qualified for carrying out the study programme may send an admission application to the Board of European Studies. However, the permission given may stipulate that one or more supplementary courses be passed. Bachelor programmes open for admission to the Msc in European Studies are the following Danish degrees: HA, HA-engelsksproget, HA-Entreprenørskab & Innovation, HA (jur.), BA Oecon., BA Scient.oecon., BA Scient.pol. or SPRØK. Applicants with other Danish or international bachelor degrees might be admitted to the Master programme as well, however, admission might be conditioned by passing one or more supplement tests to be determined by the Board of Studies. Language requirements: Danish students must also have passed English at B-level by the grade 6 or above. Students from abroad must be able to participate actively in the eercises and lectures, which are only offered in English. Students must be able to take tests, deliver written tets and make oral presentations in English. Students from other EU-countries must document knowledge in English corresponding to what is required of Danish students. Students from non-english-speaking countries must have passed an IELTS test with a score of at least 6.5 or a TOEFL test with a score of at least 550/213.

9 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 8 of Description, content and weight (ECTS) 5.1 Description The MSc in European Studies programme at the University of Southern Denmark encompasses courses offering advanced studies within disciplines related to Social Sciences and Humanities. It is a cross-border international study programme offered in cooperation between the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Flensburg (Germany). The programme is offered at the campus of the University of Flensburg with substantial instruction provided by scholars from the University of Southern Denmark. It is aimed at international students from all over the World. Thus, the language of the study programme and instruction is solely English, sharpening the international profile of the study programme. Consequently, all eaminations and the Master thesis have to be in English. The programme has a combined European and Regional focus, both offering courses on general European issues regarding Law, Economics, Identity & Culture, Contemporary History, and courses with a regional focus regarding innovation, regional integration, and border region development within a European contet. The study programme allows for at total of 15 ECTS elective courses on the 3rd semester, enabling the students to define their individual profile. Elective courses can consist of one or more courses. The study programme enables the students to gain substantial competences within the core areas of European integration and development. Graduates will be able to find occupation and job opportunities within a wide range of both public and private institutions such as international and national bodies, agencies, organisations or companies working with both European and regional areas of activities.

Study activities that comprise electives of 15 ECTS and the Master Thesis have to take place at the University of Southern Denmark. 5.3 Content Each semester, a number of core courses and advanced courses are offered in the Master s programme. 13 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 12 of Other regulations 6.1 Course descriptions and methods of evaluation Course descriptions and methods of evaluation will be published in the descriptions of the graduate courses, which form part of the curriculum. The course descriptions contain information about: 1) The Danish and the English title of the course. 2) The campus in which the course is offered. 3) Level of the course (graduate or undergraduate). 4) The responsible Study Board. 5) Approval date of the Study Board. 6) Date for latest update. 7) Responsible instructor. 8) Responsible department. 9) ECTS-points/Share of annual workload. 10) Prerequisites (recommended and not required). 11) Aim of the course. 12) Main topics. 13) Literature. 14) Teaching term. 15) Type and language of the course. 16) Evaluation time. 17) Eamination requirements (must be met to participate in the eamination). 18) Evaluation form, internal or eternal evaluation plus the Danish 7-point scale or passed/not passed Eamination in a discontinued course will normally be held three times after last normal eamination unless the course is reinstated. The latest announced evaluation form and syllabus will always be applicable. Students can only attend courses forming part of the study programme in which they are enrolled, unless they have obtained special permission from the Study Board to follow courses not offered in their study programme. Only courses which can be used in the Master s degree may be followed. Eamination language All eams will be held in English. The Master thesis has to be written in English as well.

Students will be eamined in the latest syllabus. Syllabus descriptions form part of the curriculum. 6.3 Eamination Ordinary eamination As a rule, the ordinary eaminations are held in February/March and July/August. Re-eamination Re-eamination in the same eamination period is not held in the MSc in European Studies programme. Make-up eamination Documentation for the eaminee s illness must be provided and must be sent to the Board of European Studies along with an application for make-up eamination. Registration for eaminations Registration for eamination takes place during the periods of: 20 November 20 December for the winter eaminations, 1 May 31 May for the summer eaminations. Redrawing must be handed in no later than one week before the eamination. All study material allowed If all study material is allowed for the eamination it means books, notes, papers, pocket calculator and similar. Computers, printers, telephones or other material that can communicate inside and outside the room and which may be disturbing can not be used unless it is precisely announced in the course description. Spelling and writing Assignments etc are mainly assessed upon the academic contents. Spelling and writing of the student weight only on a limited scale, unless it concerns rather significant deviations from the standard academic usage. This applies mainly in connection with larger assignments in writing.

15 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 14 of Regulations concerning study activity On 27 May 2005 The Faculty of Social Sciences has adopted "Regulation concerning cancellation of enrolment owing to study inactivity (Please see separate enclosure). 6.5 Credit transfer The rules about passed/not passed are not in force if the institution has accepted a trainee period and/or credit transfer from another educational institution. Every credit transfer must be approved by the Board of European Studies. 6.6 Complaints Complaints about an eamination or the assessment must be brought before the Dean no later than two weeks after the eamination result has been notified. The reason for the complaint must be stated in writing.

16 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 15 of Master s Thesis 7.1 Topic area As an integrated part of the MSc in European Studies programme, the Master s thesis must be prepared in a topic within the area of study. The topic chosen must be approved by a teacher. Written reports, term papers, and seminars which have previously been handed in for assessment may not form part of the Master s thesis. In re-eamination a new topic must be chosen. 7.2 Elaboration and group work Students may choose to write the Master s thesis individually or with a fellow student. However, the Board of European Studies may waive this rule. When choosing to write in groups it must be specified in the preface who is responsible for which parts of the Master s thesis. The Master s thesis has to be written in English and must be accompanied by a summary in English or another principal language according to arrangement with the supervisor/supervisors. The contents of the summary will form part of the evaluation of the Master s thesis. The summary must not eceed two pages. 7.3 Registration Having chosen a topic for the Master s thesis, a supervisor agreement must be filled in and turned in to the secretariat. The agreement must include information about the topic of the Master s thesis and a deadline for handing in the project description. The agreement must be signed by the student(s) and the supervisor(s).

17 Year: 2006 Updated: 22 August 2006 Page 16 of Evaluation of the thesis The student(s) must hand in the Master s thesis in three copies at the secretariat (four copies, if it may be issued by the University Library). During the evaluation of the thesis the student presents the Master s thesis. On the basis of this, the teacher and eaminer will eamine the student within the field of the Master s thesis. Duration of the evaluation of the thesis (oral defence) is approimately one to three hours. The eamination is individual. If the Master s thesis is prepared by a group, students are not allowed to stay in the eamination room before their individual eamination shall begin or has taken place. The oral defence is opened by the student giving a speech of 10 to 20 minutes, focusing on problems during the preparation of the master s thesis, etc. A summary of the assignment is not advisable. The purpose of the subsequent discussion is to * clarify disputed points concerning details of the Master s thesis * undertake a thorough test of the student s knowledge within the topic of the Master s thesis. Time and place for the evaluation of thesis will be announced on the notice board no later than seven days before the evaluation takes place. By the evaluation of the Master s thesis the linguistic presentation might under certain etreme circumstances have an effect on the evaluation. In case of relevant and documented functional disabilities an eemption to this rule can be made. The evaluation of a thesis is open to the public unless special arrangements have been made and will be held at University of Southern Denmark.

18 The Faculty of Social Sciences University of Southern Denmark Regulation concerning cancellation of enrolment owing to study inactivity According to 31 in the Ministerial Order No. 126 of 26 February 2005 concerning admission etc. for the bachelor and master programmes at the universities regulations regarding cancellation of enrolment owing to study inactivity are hereby stipulated. 1. Enrolment is cancelled when a student has not been actively studying within the last two years, unless the student and the Study Board / Director of Studies agree in writing. Subsection 2. Periods of leave are not included after subsection Study inactivity means that the student has made no attempts to sit for any eam nor passed any courses by virtue of credit transfer within the last two years. 3. Before the end of the two year period, the student will be offered counselling and possible supportive arrangements with the aim of resuming study activity. Subsection 2. Prior to the cancellation of enrolment the student is informed about the date of the cancellation of enrolment. Subsection 3. If the student does not respond to this information after subsection 1 and 2, or if the student stays away from the supportive arrangement after subsection 1, enrolment will be cancelled. 4. The Study Board may make eemptions from the regulations in 1-3 under eceptional circumstances. 5. The regulations do not include enrolment at Part Time Study (Åben Uddannelse). 6. The regulations take effect as from 1 September 2005 and include students who are enrolled at a programme offered by The Faculty of Social Sciences on the date of effect of the regulations and students who are enrolled after the date of effect of the regulations. 27th of May 2005
