Detectors and Optical Cables Detectors and Optical Cables. Detectors Each detector monitors a sphere of 3m (radius) with the angle of 80. The sensitivity is reduced between 80 and 300 so that a sphere of.5 m is monitored. Above 300 the sensitivity of the detector is greatly reduced and should not be used. For further information regarding location see Instruction E. 3m 3m The figure illustrates how the sensitivity of the detector is reduced for different angles.. Glass fibre and plastic fibre cables All types have pre-designated lengths and must not be shortened. Excess cable should be wound up and kept as a ring with a diameter of at least 00 mm, as shown in the figure. Cable which has been wound up should not be fastened together in the middle, as this can harm the fibres. The glass fibre cables are not to be bent in a loop with a radius less than 0 mm occasionally and 50 mm continuously. The plastic fibre cables are not to be bent in a loop with a radius less than 0 mm occasionally and 45 mm continuously. These restrictions are to ensure a maximum lifetime for the cables, even at high temperatures. The ends must be kept clean and, if needed, be wiped off before connecting them to the unit..3 Connection possibilities Plastic fibre detectors with cat. No. SK and glass fibre detectors with cat. 3 (alone) (alone). Mounting of apparatus The units should be mounted with the flange opening facing downwards, inside a cubicle or separately on a wall or stand.. Electrical Installation The apparatus should be earthed for protection. (see diagram 4.) The supply voltage is connected to terminals 3 and 4. There are two versions of the : SFA R00 for 60-0V DC / 60-40V 50/60 Hz SFA R00 for 4-48V DC. The triac outputs, terminals 0, and, 3, are used for circuit-breaker tripping. If a DC voltage is used, the + is to be connected to terminal or 3. Please observe that a triac cannot break DC. The signal relay K, terminals 8,9 and 30, is used for external indication that the unit has tripped. The signal relay K, terminals 5,6 and 7, is used for external indication that the unit is in operation..3 Connection of Optical Fibre Cables and Detectors General Before the detectors can be connected to the apparatus the protective covers on the input terminals must be removed. Please note that unused optical inputs must have their protective covers left on, to avoid unjustified tripping signals coming from them. When connecting the detectors to the apparatus the end sleeve of the optical fibre is pressed to the bottom of the connection terminal. Please check that it can not be removed easily by gently pulling the optical cable. The detectors are connected to the detector inputs, i.e. the optical fibre connectors Settings for Operation Switch. Switch. Switch.3 Switch.4 OFF (depressed on the left side), current condition inactive Alt. : Automatic reset of the signal relay K after 00 ms, OFF (depressed on the left side) Alt. : Manual reset of the signal relay, ON (depressed on the right side) Not in use Not in use.5 Control Test after installation, performed before the unit goes into use The supply voltage is switched on. The decimal point on the display will be lit and the relay contact 5-6 open, when the supply voltage is on. A fault is simulated by using a camera flash with a flashing time of approximately 0.5 ms. At normal sensitivity the will react to a camera flash, guide number = 6 (m) DIN/00 ASA, at a distance of more than.5 m from the detector and pointed towards the detector without any object standing in the way. The test is done for each installed detector and every time it should be checked that the display shows the correct detector number and that the circuit-breaker trips. Reset must be done after each test to allow a new digit to be shown. Test when in use To enable a test to be done when the is in use, the trip circuit can be disconnected by opening the terminals and 3. Warning: Since the breaking capacity of the disconnectable terminal blocks are very low, they must not be opened when there is current flowing in the circuit. DO NOT FORGET TO RECONNECT THE TERMINALS AND 3 AFTER THE TEST. A control of the function is recommended after every arc fault and should also be carried out regularly, e.g. once a year or at least once every second year. This applies to all units. - 3-
3 + Current Sensing Unit 3 + Current Sensing Unit 3. Mounting of apparatus The units should be mounted with the flange opening facing downwards, inside a cubicle or separately on a wall or stand. 3. Electrical Installation The apparatus should be earthed for protection. See text for, paragraph. Current Sensing Unit (see diagram 4.) The supply voltage is connected to terminal The terminals are selected according to desired voltage. The current-circuits from the external current transformers are connected to the terminals...6. Single-, two- or three-phase connection is possible, but single-phase connection results in a somewhat longer function time. One side of each current-circuit should be connected to earth. By EMC-reasons this is best done by earthing of the terminals, 4 and 6 inside the enclosure. Current transformers. The internal connection in the Current Sensing Unit is selected according to which secondary rating the chosen transformers have. See table below. Secondary rating of trafo A A 5A Connection X4-X7, X5-X0, X6-X3 X4-X6, X5-X9, X6-X X4-X5, X5-X8, X6-X 3.3 Connection of Optical Fibre Cables and Detectors General Before the detectors can be connected to the apparatus the protective covers on the input terminals must be removed. Please note that unused optical inputs must have their protective covers left on, to avoid unjustified tripping signals coming from them. When connecting the detectors to the apparatus the end sleeve of the optical fibre is pressed to the bottom of the connection terminal. Please check that it can not be removed easily by gently pulling the optical fibre cable. The detectors are connected to the detector inputs, i.e. the optical fibre connectors...9. An optical fibre cable is connected between connector 0 in the and connector 7 or 8 in the Current Sensing Unit. Current Sensing Unit If more than one Current Sensing Unit is used, the optical fibre cables are connected from output 7 or 8 to input 9 of the next Current Sensing Unit so that the Current Sensing Units are connected in series. 3.4 Settings for Operation Switch. 5 3 + Current Sensing Unit Current Sensing Unit Switch Switch Potentiometer R Position : Test Position : Operation Position : When input terminal 9 is not used. Position : When input terminal 9 is used. The overcurrent level should be set as low as possible. Adjustment is to be done at max load current. The potentiometer is turned clockwise until both the yellow LED V7 and the green LED V9 are lit. It ishould then be turned back slightly until the yellow LED is switched off. With this setting the current sensing unit will indicate an overcurrent at a level of approx. 40% of the max load current. 3.5 Control Test after installation, performed before the unit goes into use The supply voltage is switched on. The decimal point on the display will be lit and the relay contact 5-6 open, when the supply voltage is on. a) Test with light detection only, without current condition. Switch. is set to open, OFF (depressed on the left side). After test switch. has to be reset to position closed, ON (depressed on the right side). b) Test with Current Sensing Unit. The settings do not need to be changed. Current Sensing Unit Switch is set to position, i.e. the test position. A red lit LED, V, indicates that is in test position. a) An overcurrent is simulated by turning the potentiometer R9 clockwise until both the yellow, V7, and the green, V9, LEDs are switched off. A fault is simulated again, in the same way as above, and it should be checked that the circuit-breaker trips. b) A normal current is simulated by turning the potentiometer R9 anti-clockwise so that both the yellow LED and the green LED are lit. A fault is simulated again, in the same way as above, and it should be checked that the circuit-breaker does NOT trip. Resetting to NORMAL RUN condition is done by: - Closing the terminals and 3 and the switch. in the. - Setting switch in the Current Sensing Unit to position. (The red LED V is switched off.) Test when in use To enable a test to be done when the is in use, the trip circuit can be disconnected by opening the terminals and 3. - 5-

5 Installation of Arc Guard System in MNS 5 Installation of Arc Guard System in MNS 5. Detector location Location in an apparatus cubicle The horizontal and vertical busbars in an apparatus cubicle can be monitored by a detector located above the busbars. A single detector is able to monitor the busbars in both the apparatus cubicle and the cable cubicle belonging to it. To fasten the detector a simple plastic mounting bracket SFA663006R00 or SFA663006R00, should be screwed on to the upper part of the cubicle frame, in the fourth hole from the right side, see fig.. The holes in the mounting bracket are suitable for M5 thread rolling screws or ST 5,5 tapping screws. The bend of the mounting bracket should point downwards and the detector should be attached to the upper side of it by a.5 mm wide cable strap fitted to the rear groove on the detector head and the notches of the mounting bracket, see fig.. The detector should be attached to the mounting bracket before it is screwed on to the cubicle. Mounting bracket Fig. Bracket with Cat. No. SFA R00 ) is intended for cubicle with depth 600 mm. Bracket with Cat. No. SFA R00 ) is intended for cubicle with depth 000 mm but can be cut to fit depth 800 mm also. ) contains bracket, cable straps and screws. Fig. - 8-
5 Installation of Arc Guard System in MNS Location in a circuit-breaker cubicle In a circuit-breaker cubicle there is a risk of detecting breaking arcs unintentionally, if the detector is placed above the busbars. In such a cubicle it is better to place the detector at the bottom, see fig. 3. The same mounting bracket as for top mounting can be used, but the bend is turned upwards and the detector placed on the upper side. There is a hole (or it has to be drilled, 0mm) in the transparent protective sheet in front of the busbars, in which the detector can be located. Fig. 3 If many cables are connected to the terminals on the lower side of the circuit-breaker, the arc monitoring should be completed with an additional detector located just behind the front protective sheet, see fig. 4. The detector should be attached directly to the bottom side of the bracket of the protective cover with a cable strap. The detector bracket SFA663006R00,...R00 is not required. Fig. 4-9-
5 Installation of Arc Guard System in MNS 5. Location of units The s and the Current Sensing Unit should preferably be placed in a 6-modules fixed apparatus group, where they can be accessed easily. As the viewing angle of the display in the is very narrow, it is important that they are not placed in the uppermost part of the cubicle. Fig Laying of optical fibre cables Optical fibre cables may be laid together with electrical wires but they are more fragile than such wires. It is very important that the bending radius is larger than the smallest allowable radius. An optical fibre cable must not be exposed to pressure or tensile stress. When fixing the optical fibre cable with cable straps, they must not be tightened so hard that the cable is deformed. As the optical fibre cables are delivered in fixed lengths, there is often a piece in excess. This should be laid or hung in a ring with a diameter larger than 00 mm. See also paragraph..
