2 Introduction to Commercial Fishing What is commercial fishing? Commercial fishing is the act of catching fish and other seafood for commercial profit, it provides a large quality of food to many countries around the world. Causing overfishing. Overfishing occurs when fish are being caught faster than they can reproduce and replace themselves.

3 Pros of commercial fishing Commercial fishing has provided career opportunities for thousands of fisherman, and is great for the economy, as the demand for fish is steadily increasing. Seafood is also a fairly healthy dietary option, and consuming it can be better for you than other types of meat.

4 Cons of commercial fishing Catching excessive numbers of fish heavily impacts the population of targeted species, and lowering fish populations can also lower predator populations, as the predators have much less prey to hunt. Overfishing can not affect only one species, it is damaging to entire ecosystems.

5 Effects on other animals There are many effects from fishing that not only affect us, but affect marine life as well. Overfishing has caused significant decline in the populations of many sea creatures, targeted fish experience heavy declines in their numbers, and as a result, predatory species become threatened as well because they lose a major food source. For example, the sea lion populations in the north Pacific have seen heavy decline due to overfishing depleting their stock of available fish, which they rely on for food.

6 Effects on other animals (Entrapment) A large area of concern is the amount of animals being entrapped by commercial fishing nets. An estimated 100,000 animals a year are are killed or injured because of the commercial fishing industry. These deaths result from species being hit by boats, ensnared by fishing gear, or being caught alongside other species. Mammals such as whales and dolphins get trapped in nets, which restrict their ability to get to the surface for air, causing the animals to asphyxiate.

7 Impacts on the Community Commercial fishing has always played a large role in New England s economy providing the community with jobs. But in recent years overfishing and tight catch quotas have caused a huge decline in the commercial fishing industry especially with Cod and Haddock. In 2004 there was 4,710 Massachusetts residents employed in fishing, hunting, and trapping. By 2014 that number had dropped to 2,739 residents. Fishermen and women are continuing to lose jobs because of either a lack of fish to catch because of overfishing or because they can t catch enough fish to make a living because of tight quotas and regulations put in place to help fix the problem overfishing has caused.

8 Impact on the Environment Commercial Fishing has impacted the ocean's ecosystem in many ways. One way is overfishing because of that there are less fishes than there was and so the fishes are not able to increase their populations. Overfishing is not just harming the fishes but is also affecting other sea creatures too and there

9 Cod Cod fish are becoming more endangered due to overfishing in the UK, Canada, and other Atlantic countries. Not only is overfishing decreasing the species of fish and their population, but it also disrupts the entire aquatic food chain, affecting other fish and animals in the ocean. There is 3 basic types of Cod: -Pacific Cod(Gadus Macrocephalus) -Atlantic Cod(Gadus Morhua) -Greenland Cod(Gadus Ogac) Atlantic Cod is considered to be the most vulnerable. The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and the WWF (World WIldlife Foundation) consider cod to be one of the most threatened species of fish. The IUCN and WWF are working to find a fair balance in the fishing industry to keep these species safe. Otherwise there will be no more industry and more importantly, no more fish in the ocean.

10 The Solution There is a solution to sustaining the Ocean s wild fish and the demands of the populace. Boats will no longer be required which will extinguish the need for fuel and instead bring forth a much more stable practice which is evident in today s society, fish farming. Fish farming will open new job opportunities, decrease pollution, and be able to keep up with the demands. Even though studies show that farmed fish can breed/ carry diseases when bunched together and known to be highly contaminated by chemicals due to their feed. As long as these fish are examined, checked, feed with natural foods and separated from native fish, fish farming is the most ideal approach to allow wild fish to repopulate and feed the ever growing human population.
