1 -1- C.I.S.A.A. BADMINTON (last update June 10, OFFICIAL RULE BOOK The rules shall be the Umpires Handbook published by the Ontario Badminton Association. 2. SCHEDULING Each school is encouraged to play all other C.I.S.A.A.-Boys' Division schools participating at their level of competition. TOURNAMENT PLAY a. Each school will be asked to declare their involvement in the tournament approximately three weeks before the event. b. The tournament convenor will send out the schedule of games before the tournament date and as soon as possible. Seedings often occur on the last day before the tournament. c. Athletic Directors will determine the dates of the Junior and Senior tournaments at AD meetings and the dates will be published on the League Information Charts. These tourneys usually are scheduled after the Victoria Day holiday weekend. d. To accommodate this dual format of recognising both team and individuals, there will be 5 draw sheets for each age level, one draw sheet each for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd Singles, as well as 1 st and 2 nd Doubles. Players on each draw sheet would play a modified double-elimination tournament leading to individual standings (see later in this section for more). Points would be awarded to each player depending on their final standing. These points would contribute to their teams overall total. Therefore, the school that accumulates the most points would win the championship at their age level. In the event of a tie in the final standings, co-school champions will be declared. Points will be awarded as follows: Championship winner Second Place Third place Fourth place Fifth/sixth Seventh/eighth 18 points 15 points 12 points 9 points 6 points 3 points

2 -2- All matches will be 2 out of 3 games to 21 rally points. Setting rules would continue to follow Ontario Badminton Association standards. First place champion (gold medalist) will be main draw winner. Second place (silver medalist) will be determined by the winner of the following match: the loser of the gold medal match from the main draw vs. the winner of the consolation draw. Please note that this match will not have to be played if the loser of the gold medal match has already defeated the consolation winner previously in this tournament. e. Tournament convenors will attempt to seed participating schools based upon their season's record. Each school participating in the tournament will attempt to play at least three other schools during the regular season. f. In order to ensure as fair a draw as possible, coaches are requested to comply in three ways: 1. The coach of a hosting school for an exhibition match would fax/ the next day, a copy of the names of players and results of the matches to the Tournament Convenor. 2. Entries for the tournament would be formalised and submitted by fax/ to the Tournament Convenor by the set deadline, normally one week prior to the tournament. 3. Each participating player must compete in a minimum of two games to be eligible for the final tournament. g. For each draw a school would have to seed their best player or team at the 1 st level, the next best at the 2 nd and the third best at the 3 rd level. A coach would have to refrain from the temptation to stack a team by putting a stronger player in a lower draw (playing your best singles player in the 2 nd singles draw) to guarantee extra points for the team. The integrity of the tournament would be dependent upon each school honouring this requirement completely. h. In order to ensure the team nature of the sport, a school should attempt to enter a full team compliment of players. 3. OFFICIALS Umpires and officials will not normally be appointed, but any player may ask, through their coach, for these officials to be appointed 4. FORMAT AND LENGTH OF GAME

3 Length of game is to 21 points and continue to rally point as at OFSAA. -3- a) If the score reaches 20 all, the game is won by establishing a two point lead. b) If the score reaches 29-29, the winner of the next point shall win the game. c) At all age levels scores are to be recorded after the final game. Team Composition: 3 singles, 2 doubles 5. SCORING Any official thus appointed will decide all points, keep score and declare the final results. Otherwise, games normally will be self-refereed. We will adopt the OFSAA scoring system for all age levels in Badminton. 6. ELIGIBILITY - See Constitutional Guidelines Article XIII, XIV, and XV Players are players regardless of their sex. 7. UNIFORMS All players would have to adhere strictly to dress regulations during tournament play. An ad hoc committee of coaches would be struck by the tournament convenor to enforce the dress code. Players without proper dress would not be permitted to continue their matches and would forfeit. The only acceptable dress for tournament play would be either school gym uniform or whites as per OFSAA regulations. Head coverings (hats, bandannas) would not be permitted, nor would sweats be allowed during play. Sweatbands would be permitted. 8. EQUIPMENT The official shuttlecock will be the "Yonex Mavis 350 Yellow model, as at OFSAA. Mandatory use of protective eye wear for all age levels at all games/championships, including warm-ups. 4 CONVENOR See the CISAA Constitution, Summary of Convenor s Responsibilities, Appendix SPORTSMANSHIP & CONDUCT See CISAA Constitution, Article XVIII, Discipline 14. COACHES RESPONSIBILITIES & HOST SCHOOL Coaches would be asked to assist during the tournament to make sure that players get to the correct court and that warm-up times are limited to 2 minutes. A roster of duty times would be posted at the beginning of the tournament. 15. AWARDS CISAA plaques will be awarded to the champion at each level Winner and finalist of each event (ie 1 st singles, 2 nd singles, 3 rd singles, 1 st doubles, and 2 nd doubles) for Sr i and Jr will receive CISAA gold and silver medals. 16. GUIDELINES for OFSAA REPRESENTATION Eligibility Rosters must be sent in for all Senior Div 1 OFSSA bound teams to the convenor before the first C.I.S.A.A. league game. The OFSAA qualifying tournament will be scheduled in April by the athletic directors. 17. SAFETY GUIDELINES Equipment A fully stocked first aid kit must be readily accessible. A working communication device (e.g., cell phone) must be accessible. Determine that all equipment is safe for use. Racquets must be inspected regularly for breakage and to determine proper grip. Protective eye gear meeting ASTM F803-standard or equivalent must be worn by all (singles and doubles) for competition and all practice situations. Clothing/Footwear Appropriate clothing and footwear must be worn. No hanging jewelry.

5 -5- Facilities Determine that all facilities are safe for use. Playing surface and surrounding area must be free of all obstacles (e.g., tables, chairs), and must provide sufficient traction. Court boundary lines must be clearly defined. A safety procedure must be established for side-by-side courts. Special Rules/Instructions Skills must be taught in proper progression. Where the activity takes the athlete off campus, parents/guardians must be made aware of means of transportation used. Be aware of athletes whose medical condition (e.g., asthma, anaphylaxis, casts, orthopaedic device) may affect participation. A student athlete s fitness level must be commensurate with the level of competition When teaching/practicing skills, adequate spacing must be allowed for each athlete to be able to make an uninterrupted swing. The code of etiquette for court play must be taught and enforced,(e.g., not entering a court being used). Players must stop play whenever a foreign object comes onto the court. Encourage front court player to avoid facing partner during a rally. Interschool competitions must follow the regulations and rules of the local governing body (CISAA, OFSAA) and/or Provincial Sport Organization for the activity. Setting up of equipment requires on-site supervision.
