1 Butte County Regional Occupational Program COURSE DESCRIPTION COURSE TITLE: CEBEDS TITLE: RETAIL SALES AND SERVICE General Merchandise Retailing CEBEDS NO: 417 LENGTH OF COURSE: HOURS: ARTICULATION: 1 Year 36 (2 Hours a Day) Butte College JOB TITLES DOT NO: Salesperson Cashier Sales Attendant Sales Clerk Buyer Store Manager Merchandise Manager Department Manager Stock Clerk Receiving Clerk Display Person Recommended Prerequisites: None Course Description: This course combines classroom and community classroom instruction to train students for entry-level sales and sales-related jobs. Training will include: cash register operation, change making, merchandising, bagging, stocking, sales presentations, cashiering skills, inventory control, and customer relations. Training will also include advertising and display, buying, payroll and employee supervision. Emphasis is placed on learning by doing. Business attitudes, work habits and attendance are also an important part of the instruction. Student Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of career planning and employment opportunities in the industry. 2. Demonstrate basic skills necessary to gain and maintain employment within the industry, write a résumé, a cover and follow-up letter, complete an application, and participate in a job interview. 3. Describe leadership characteristics, demonstrate leadership qualities, and practice decision making skills. 4. 2 5. Apply communication skills orally and in writing, using appropriate vocabulary and grammar following acceptable standards for punctuation, capitalization, and number presentations. 6. Calculate and record totals, balances, percentages, interest, discounts, stock turnover, measurements, and other industry computations. 7. Demonstrate human/customer relations skills by working with people at the customer, peer, and supervisory/management levels and developing positive intra and interpersonal skills. 8. Explain basic concepts such as supply and demand, forms of business ownership, and free enterprise. 9. Apply appropriate techniques in selling products/services explaining features and benefits based on customer needs. 1. Demonstrate knowledge of advertising, visual merchandising, promotion, and other marketing strategies for products/services in the industry. 11. Explain operations, policies, and procedures utilized in the industry including stock keeping, inventory control and security. 12. Describe effective managerial and entrepreneurial qualities and show how they relate to successful business operations and ownership. 13. Describe he importance of product/service knowledge and apply it to a merchandising and sales situation. 7 Methods, Strategies and Techniques A variety of strategies and techniques are used to instruct the students, including: cooperative learning, current textbooks, technology and reference materials, demonstrations, field trips, group instruction, and guest speakers. Assessment of Student Performance Assessment of student performance will include: classroom participation, completion of required assignments, a complete portfolio, individual and group projects, industry related tests, and work habits (attendance, punctuality, professional attitude, and being a member of a team). ROP Certificate Requirements To earn a Certificate of Proficiency for this course, students must accomplish the following: completion of competencies at a minimum performance of 7%, maintain an 85% or higher attendance rate, and demonstrate positive work ethics in class. Academic Credit This course may be used for elective credits. Articulation This course is articulated with Butte College s 2+2 program. Assessed Job Market Needs According to the Employment Development Department, the top industries in Butte County, in the order of percentage of jobs are: Services (25%), Retail Trade (22%), and Government (21%). The estimated number of hires by industry in Butte County are Retail Trade (33%), Services (31%), Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (3%), and Public Administration (3%). Thirty seven percent of the hires will be in the service industry for which this class will prepare students with computer skills. Generally, the Department of Labor predicts that the overall employment of secretaries in the health and legal services fields and information clerks will have faster than average employment growth through the year 25. (See the attached labor market summaries done by the local Private Industry Council for jobs related to the course content).
