Methodology (recall) The Methodology to use considers the Analysis, Architecture, and Design as Processes with Information Flows between them: TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 5
Characteristics of Networks Levels of hierarchy and diversity. Hierarchy is the degree of concentration of networks or traffic flows at interconnection points within the network Hierarchy is the number of tiers of interconnection points within the network. Diversity (a.k.a. redundancy or interconnectivity) provides a mechanism to achieve performance within a hierarchical structure Hierarchy provides structure in the network, diversity balances this structure by interconnecting the network at different levels in the design to provide greater performance through parts of the network. 7 Characteristics of Networks TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 7
Network Analysis its importance Network analysis is important in that: helps us understand the complexity and nuances of each network and the systems they support. provides data upon which various decisions are made these data can and should be documented as part of an audit trail for the architecture and design processes. Such data (requirements, metrics) help ensure that the resulting architecture and design are defensible. Network requirements are requests for capabilities in the network, usually in terms of performance and function, which are necessary for the success of that network. Network requirements can be gathered and/or derived from customers, applications, services and devices Requirements, in conjunction with measurements (on the existing network) are used to derive traffic flows (sets of network traffic that have some common attributes, such as source/destination address, information type, routing, or other end-to-end information) TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 8
Network Services Network services, or services, are defined as levels of performance and function in the network. two perspectives: Services offered by the network to the rest of the system (the devices, applications, and users) Sets of requirements from the network that are expected by the users, applications, or devices. 11 Requirements TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 11
User Requirements Design TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 12
Application Requirements TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 13
Application Types: Application Requirements Mission-critical applications have predictable, guaranteed, and/or high -performance RMA requirements Rate-critical applications have predictable guaranteed and/or high -performance capacity requirements Real-time and Interactive applications have predictable, guaranteed, and/or high-performance delay requirements Application Groups (examples): Telemetry/Command-and-Control. Visualization Applications. Distributed-Computing Applications. Client Server Applications. Web Development, Access, and Use Applications. Bulk Data Transport Applications. Operations, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P). Location Based Applications. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 14
Device Requirements TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 15
Network Requirements TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 16
Other Requirements Supplemental Performance Requirements: Operational Suitability is a measure of how well our network design can be configured, monitored, and adjusted by the customer s operators. Supportability is a measure of how well the customer can keep the system performing, as designed, over the entire life of the system. Confidence is a measure of the ability of the network to deliver data without error or loss at the required throughput. Financial Requirements: Funding is often bounded by an overall cost limit, consisting of both one-time and recurring components. One-time costs are based on the actual planning and construction of the network and consist of network architecture, design, procurement, deployment, integration, and testing, and all hardware/software components, as well as the initial installation or establishment of any services from service providers. Recurring costs are for tasks and items that are expected to occur or be replaced/upgraded on a periodic basis. This includes network OAM&P, costs from service providers, and provisions for modifications to the network. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 17
Network Architecture Architecture is the Art and Science of Designing and Constructing: the discipline dealing with the principles of design and building. Network Architecture is the high-level, end-to-end structure for the network. Includes the relationships within and between major architectural components of the network, such as addressing and routing, network management, performance, and security. Network Architecture is also the set of methods used to describe, understand, and optimize the functions of a network, their interactions within the network, and how they can be meaningfully combined for that network. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 18
Network Architectures A Component Architecture is a description of how and where each function of a network is applied within that network. mechanisms (hardware and software) by which that function is applied to the network, where each mechanism may be applied set of internal relationships between these mechanisms. A Reference Architecture is a description of the complete network architecture and contains all of the component architectures (i.e., functions) being considered for that network. Architecture Models are the Types of architectures used as foundation or starting point for the build TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 19
Component Architecture In a Component Architecture each Function of a network represents a major capability of that network: addressing/routing, network management performance security Infrastructure, Storage Mechanisms are hardware and software that help a network to achieve each capability Internal relationships consist of interactions (trade-offs, dependencies, and constraints), protocols, and messages between mechanisms, and are used to optimize each function within the network TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 20
Component Architecture TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 21
Component and Reference Architecture Component Architectures and the Reference Architecture are Derived from Network Requirements, Flows, and Goals TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 22
Reference Architecture A reference architecture is a description of the complete network architecture and contains all of the component architectures being considered for that network. The reference architecture is developed by combining component architectures, incorporating the effects that functions have on one another. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 23
Reference Architecture Example This example of Reference Architecture is for a 3G Mobile Network, specifying the Domains, Functional Blocks, the Interfaces and/or reference points. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 24
Architectural Models Topological models, which are based on a geographical or topological arrangement and are often used as starting points in the development of the network architecture; Flow-based models, which take particular advantage of traffic flows from the flow specification; Functional models, which focus on one or more functions or features planned for in the network. Note: the Reference Architecture will contain more than one Architectural Model. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 25

Network Design Network Design is the culmination of network analysis and architecture processes. Network Design adds product, vendor, location, and configuration detail to the architecture. TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 32
Network Design Products The key products of a Network Design are: Network blueprints describe the physical aspects of network design consist of a single diagram or several diagrams of the network, depending on the needs and the size of the project A component plan providing function-specific information describes the mechanisms associated with that function, internal interactions among those mechanisms, and external interactions among functions Vendor, vendor equipment, and service-provider selections Traceability Between design decisions, architecture decisions, requirements, and problem statements Metrics for measuring design success TÓPICOS AVANÇADOS EM REDES ADVANCED TOPICS IN NETWORKS 33
