1 Lake County Fair Game Boards and General Information. SECTION N - GAME BOARDS RULES LOT 280. Member Game Board 290. Club Game Board 1. Open only to Lake 4-H Members and/or Lake County 4-H Clubs. No Cloverbud Exhibits. 2. Only one board may be entered per club and/or member. 3. Maximum Board Size 36 X 36. (Foam board construction suggested) 4. Brads or screws may be used for connections. If using brads, soldering is optional. 5. A 6 volt lantern battery must be used. 6. Suggested wire gauges: Back of Board gauge 7. Battery Wires - 18 gauge 8. Probes - 14 gauge 9. Exhibit must include a light to indicate correct answers, and a buzzer for incorrect answers is optional. 10. Technique (Is it Fun, Readable, Clear Purpose?) Construction INTRODUCTION Electricity is a part of our everyday lives, we need to understand it for our own safety and comfort. Important aspects are voltage, current and resistance and how current flows in closed circuits. OBJECTIVE The objective is to design and build an electric game board which can be used to teach the relationships between words, numbers, pictures, etc. The challenge is to build a neat game board that works and to invent a creative game or learning system. CAUTION: This game is for battery use only. Do not plug into a wall socket. Electric current from the wall socket must have a transformer before use for these board games. DANGER: Plugging game into a wall socket can cause server injury or death. Materials Needed: Central Florida Fair has size restrictions, please follow guidelines in their premium book. *Maximum Board Size 36 X 36. *Foam board construction suggested. *Paint or colored pencils or magic markers *Brass nuts and bolts or brass brads secured by hot glue. *Black stick on letters or black contact paper to cut letters. *Socket and 6V flashlight bulb to fit socket *Wire: 14 gauge probe, 18 gauge power, 20 gauge backs of board. *6 Volt lantern battery *Solder - 50/50 and flux *Buzzer is optional

2 Tools Needed: " Hammer " Screw Driver " Wire Strippers " Soldering Iron " Drill with small bit " Hot Glue Gun " Pliers Plan the game and Construction: The major task will be to design and build the circuitry so that the board will work. The board will be wired with an even number of questions and corresponding answers, each question and answer with an electrical contact available. A question is selected by placing an alligator clip probe on the appropriate contact. An answer is then selected by touching the pointed probe to the contact for that answer. If the correct answer is selected, an LED (Light Emitting Diode) will glow. If the selected answer is incorrect, the LED will not glow. Q & A in the form of pictures, printed notes, or any other form may be chosen and secured to the board. You may use labels, attach Q & A with scotch tape, or use whatever artistic or creative means you find appropriate. Nuts, machine screws and washers are installed on the board at points where Q & A are located. The direction of the bolt should be reversed for Q & A to accommodate either the alligator clip or the probe. For example, on questions, all bolts could go nut side up, and on all answers the bolts could go nut side down. A wire is then connected between each question and the corresponding correct answer. The insulation must be stripped from the ends of all wires to allow electrical contact. A probe and alligator clip are connected to a battery with a current limiting resistor and a LED. The wiring between the question and answer terminals will complete the circuit between the LED and battery, causing the LED to glow. Wires all turned screw-wise, clock wise and excess wire removed so wire won t turn and short out. Check to make sure that no bolt is longer than the light socket; no sagging wires, no stiff wires. Wiring must be consistent, the probe wires should be the same color, etc. After the protective material has been removed from the battery, care must be taken not to short out the terminals. The battery should not be placed in a bag with loose hardware. If it is necessary to store the battery with loose hardware, the battery terminals should be covered with an insulating material, like Scotch tape.
