2 One Day Courses GEOCHEMISTRY OF LACUSTRINE SYSTEMS [Dr. Tim Ruble] This workshop will cover practical geochemical techniques to evaluate lacustrine petroleum systems. Using the Green River Petroleum System in the Uinta Basin as an analog, we will provide a background for interpreting routine source rock geochemical data to evaluate organic richness, thermal maturity and kerogen type. We will address specific interpretation caveats associated with lacustrine source rocks and discuss their applications in resource play evaluation. Variability in hydrocarbon fluid geochemistry within lacustrine systems will be evaluated from both a bulk compositional perspective and detailed biomarker analyses of key organofacies. Hydrocarbon yield calculations calibrated with laboratory simulation experimental data will be assessed to offer additional techniques for quantifying resource potential. Selection of appropriate kinetic input parameters and basin modeling of oil generation in lacustrine systems will also be covered. This course is appropriate for industry professionals with limited geochemical background and to those who seek to enhance their basic understanding with more detailed applications specific to lacustrine systems. INTRODUCTORY GEOCHEMISTRY FOR SHALE-GAS, CONDENSATE-RICH SHALES AND TIGHT OIL RESERVOIRS [Dr. Tim Ruble / Richard Drozd] The course is a practical and applied introduction to geochemical techniques routinely employed in shale-gas, shale-condensate, and tight-oil reservoir assessment. Class emphasis is on explaining which tools and techniques can best address specific questions, what caveats must be kept in mind when employing these tools, what are the strengths and limitations of petroleum geochemistry in resource play evaluation, and how to interpret conflicting data from different analyses. Participants will complete exercises interpreting pyrograms, gas chromatograms, and elementary biomarker data. The class will employ various cross plots and simple mathematics to interpret gas isotope data and calculate original TOC, hydrogen index, and oil and cracked gas yields. APPLICATIONS OF STABLE ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY IN THE PETROLEUM GEOSCIENCES [Dr. Tim Ruble / Richard Drozd] This workshop will acquaint petroleum industry and environmental professionals with the tools, methods, terminology, and interpretive techniques of stable isotope geochemistry used to understand the origin and fate of hydrocarbons and associated compounds in the earth s subsurface. The workshop will provide a general overview of first principals concerning stable isotope geochemistry in the earth sciences, followed by in-depth discussions and exercises about natural gas and liquid hydrocarbon geochemistry, and stray gas investigation and mitigation. The workshop is designed for geologists, geophysicists, engineers, and environmental professionals interested in gaining a basic knowledge of the applications of isotope geochemistry in petroleum geoscience, especially with regard to exploration, production, and environmental problems commonly encountered by the oil and gas industry in its search for energy resources. SEDIMENTARY GEOCHEMISTRY AND BIOGEOCHEMISTRY: A GUIDE TO INTERPRETING ORGANIC RICH MUDSTONES, THEIR SOLID-PHASE COMPONENTS AND ORGANIC CARBON PRESERVATION [Raymond Bruce] This course is designed to present the concepts of sedimentary geochemistry and biogeochemistry, along with the framework to interpret elemental and mineralogical records in such organic rich mudstone sequences. We will also focus on concepts as opposed to quantitative analysis, though some computations and chemical reactions will be discussed as they relate to biogeochemistry and carbonate equilibria. This course is appropriate for industry professionals who are seeking an introduction to geochemistry and chemostratigraphy as it relates to organic rich source rocks and for geologist, geophysicist, petrophysicist and/or petroleum engineers who work in unconventional shale resource plays and who use geochemical data to better understand their reservoirs. GEOCHEMISTRY: THE EFFECTS OF CONTAMINATION OF LAB DERIVED DATA [Paul Walker / Stephen Palmer] This one day course looks at many of the common forms of LCM, OBM and SBM contamination and their effect on the quality of lab data. We ll also investigate how improper sample handling, containers and packaging can have devastating results on data quality. Analyses that are covered include TOC, Rock-eval or SRA, Vitrinite reflectance, Gas Composition, GC, GCMS, and bulk crude properties.
