2 What is Phonics? Phonics teaching involves teaching children the sounds of letters (not just the names) and how to segment and blend them together to make words c a t

3 Letters and Sounds At St Wulstan's we teach phonics using the document Letters and Sounds It is a systematic programme for teaching phonics, reading and writing skills It starts in the first few weeks of starting in foundation stage and continues until our children are confident and capable readers and writers

4 Daily Phonics Everyday the children have 20 minute sessions of phonics plus additional interventions when needed We have a fast paced approach Lessons encompass a range of games, songs and rhymes We use the Letters and Sounds planning document to support the teaching if phonics, alongside the Jolly Phonics actions There are 6 phonics phases which the children work through at their own pace

5 Phonics Glossary Phoneme: The smallest unit of sound found within a word Grapheme: The spelling of the sound Digraph: Two letters that make one sound when read Trigraph: Three letters that make one sound CVC: Consonant, vowel, consonant Blending: Putting the sounds together to read Segmenting: Breaking up a word into sounds to spell Tricky words: Words that cannot easily be decoded

6 Saying the Sounds Children will learn the letter names and the letter sounds Sounds should be articulated clearly and precisely It is important to say the sounds precisely, and not grunt extra sounds at the end of a phoneme

7 The Phonics lesson There are four parts to a phonics lesson Review Teach Practise Apply

8 Phase 1 Getting Ready for Phonics Tuning into sounds Listening and remembering sounds Talking about sounds Music and movement Rhythm and Rhyme Sound effects Speaking and listening skills

9 Phase 2 Learning phonemes to read and write simple words Children will learn the first 19 phonemes: Set 1 - s, a, t, p, Set 2 - i, n, m, d Set 3 g, o, c, k Set 4 ck, e, u, r Set 5 - h, b, l, f, ff, ll, ss They will use these phonemes to read and spell simple CVC words sat, tap, dig, duck, rug, puff, hill, hiss

10 Phase 3 Learning the long vowel phonemes Children will start phase 3 when they know the first 19 phonemes and can blend and segment to read and spell CVC words They will learn another 26 phonemes: j, v, w, x, y, z, zz, qu, ch, sh, th, ng, ai, ee, igh, oa, oo, ar, or, ur, ow, oi, ear, air, ure, er They will use these phonemes (and ones from phase 2) to read and spell words like: chip, shop, thin, ring, pain, feet, night, boat, boot

11 Phase 4 Introducing consonant cluster: reading and spelling words with four or more phonemes Children move into phase 4 when they know all the phonemes from phases 2 and 3 and can use them to read and spell words (blending and segmenting) Phase 4 doesn t introduce any new phonemes It focuses on reading and spelling longer words with the phonemes they already know These words have consonant clusters at the beginning of a word, end of a word or both! spot, trip, tent, mend, trust, spend, twist

12 Phase 5 Teaches new graphemes for reading ay, ou, ie, ea, oy, ir, ue, aw, wh, ph, ew, oe, au, a-e, e-e, i-e, o-e, u-e Learn alternative pronunciations of graphemes The same grapheme can represent more than one phoneme fin / find cat / cent cow / blow eat / bread

13 Phase 5 And learning all the variations burn, first, term, heard, work Learning split digraphs Tie time Toe tone Cue cube Pie -- pine

14 Phase 6 Phase 6 focuses on spellings and learning rules for spelling alternatives Children might learn about past tense, rules for adding ing and irregular verbs tion and sion words

19 Phonics Screening Michael Gove introduced a phonics screening test into primary schools, to help to ensure all children are reading by age six. Our year 1 children will sit this test at the end of the year.

20 Letter Formation Letter formation is also taught as part of the phonics session in nursery and reception Each letter can be described as long straight/short straights long curves and short curves. Handwriting is taught separately in years 1 and 2

21 Pronunciation How can you help? Reading, listening to your child read and modelling good reading Encourage sounding out blending and segmenting Sharing rhymes and songs Talking about sounds Praise! Tricky words
