2 The Master of Arts in English Studies (MAES) offered by the Department of English at City University of Hong Kong provides a professional education leading to a wide range of opportunities open to English specialists. In addition, the programme provides a strong foundation for those wishing to embark on PhD research in many other areas of English studies. The MAES provides a flexible programme of study enabling students to follow a mainstream general track or choose a stream in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Literary and Cultural Studies (LCS). 4 Programme aims The General Track (no stream) offers a solid foundation in English studies for students interested in an English-related discipline. It prepares students for language-intensive careers requiring higher skills in English, or students for higher-level research degrees. The TESL stream provides current or future teachers of English with a background in up-to-date methods of teaching English. Incorporating a balanced mix of theory and practice, this stream will qualify students to take up advanced positions in the English Language Teaching sector on completion of the programme, or will serve as a useful preparation for higher degree studies. The LCS stream is designed for teachers of English who wish to promote English language learning in a broad range of language arts, particularly literature and popular culture. It will provide students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to develop in the areas of literary studies and cultural studies. Students may only take one stream.

Attendance and assessment The MA in English Studies is flexible, modular and supported by specially designed learning packages, with classes held in the evening. The programme can be taken full-time (12-18 credits per semester) or part-time (no more than 11 credits per semester). Most courses are assessed through coursework, though some may include examinations. Students are expected to do a substantial amount of reading as well as to prepare assignments outside class.

6 Requirements To be eligible for admission, you must satisfy the General Entrance Requirements set by the University. The General Entrance Requirements are listed on the following link: Students will usually hold a bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification in English, TESL, Professional Communication, Education, or a related field. Students from disciplines related to Professional Communication, for example Business Communication, and also other disciplines, may additionally be considered from time to time. Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English should also fulfill any one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements: EITHER overall band 7 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); OR a score of 610 (paper-based test), or 253 (computer-based test), or 102 (Internet-based test) in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Other evidence of English proficiency will not be accepted. Tuition The tuition for the programme is HK$3,010 per credit 2 for local students and HK$4,030 for non-local students. This tuition fee will apply until the end of your study in this programme. 2. Pending approval
