5 Southampton A great place to live and study A major commercial centre and university city on the south coast, Southampton combines the modern and the historic and is ideally located. Southampton is best known for the Titanic, which sailed from here in Today, the city is still the cruise ship capital of England and is a major centre for sailing and shipping. Southampton s population of 230,000 includes 35,000 university students. This gives the city a young, vibrant atmosphere. Visitors will enjoy the popular West Quay Shopping Centre - one of the largest in the south - and also the huge entertainment complex Leisure World. In the heart of the city there are large, beautiful parks, which are great places to relax and have fun. London is only 1¼ hours by train and many places of interest are within easy travelling distance, such as the historic cities of Bath, Oxford and Winchester, and the New Forest National Park. 7 Our School Perfect city centre location The Lewis School has been welcoming students from all over the world since We are conveniently located in Southampton city centre, opposite a beautiful park (see photo, left). The city centre shops and bus terminus are just two minutes walk from the school. We occupy four elegant 18th-century townhouses with many original features. Facilities include 16 classrooms, a computer room, a study centre, a nursery, a prayer room and a coffee room. We also provide free wi-fi Internet. At the back of the school there are garden patios where you can relax or play table tennis. These are also used for barbecue parties in summer. Next door is Southampton Solent University with 17,000 students. We co-operate in a number of ways and our students can use their cafeteria. You will also benefit from our school s wide nationality mix. We welcome students from more than 50 different countries every year. Our typical number of students is , rising to in July and August. The average age of students is 24, with the majority aged between 18 and 30. 7

Many of us have lived and taught abroad, so we are familiar with a range of cultures, and with the experience of learning a language in a foreign country. We prepare you for communication in the real English-speaking world outside the classroom. Classes are motivating and challenging and the atmosphere is friendly and caring. These are the best conditions for learning. We pride ourselves on individual attention - our teaching team are always available to support your learning and discuss your progress with you. You will also find our teaching is very creative. We use many different techniques and a wide range of resources, such as authentic texts and audio/video from the Internet. 13 Your Clas ses A Guide to General English Your First Day We give you a grammar test and short speaking test to find out your level, and place you in a suitable class. We also take you on a tour of the city centre. Changing Levels Our teachers work together to monitor your progress and make sure you receive tuition at the right level. We can change your level any week, when you and your teachers agree you are ready. What will I study? Our syllabus is specially designed so you can start any week. Lessons cover speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, plus grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and study skills, with topics changing weekly. Self-Study & Learner Support You can do extra practice at our study centre and at our website, which has an interactive online syllabus. We also provide regular tutorials to make sure you are happy with your learning. Free English Clubs You can improve your skills at our free Conversation Club, Reading Club and Grammar Clinic (not available in summer and during busy periods). 15 Accommodation Choose Homestay or Residential Homestay Accommodation Staying in a homestay can be a valuable part of your language course. They welcome you into their home and give you a comfortable and friendly base during your stay. All homestay hosts have been personally chosen by the school and are regularly inspected. Your host will wash your clothes and keep your room clean, but do not expect hotel service! Most homestays are minutes by bus from the school. You can choose half-board or full-board accommodation. We also offer Executive Homestay, which guarantees you a private bathroom. Residential Accommodation (summer only) In the summer we offer residential accommodation a 5-minute walk from the school and the city centre (see photos above). All rooms are fully furnished, with free Internet access for laptop users. There is also wi-fi access in the common room. You can choose between a single studio, a double studio or a single ensuite room in a shared flat. Flats have five rooms and a shared kitchen. Rooms are offered on a half-board, full-board or self-catering basis. 15

17 Activities Discover England with your new friends We believe social activities are a very important part of your learning programme. They provide an opportunity to make friends, practise English and learn about British culture. We go on day trips every weekend in July and August, and once or twice a month at other times. Destinations include London, Bath, Oxford, Stonehenge, the New Forest, Brighton and the Dorset Coast. Evening activities include pub trips, barbecue parties, boat parties, cinema and theatre trips, restaurant trips, bowling and international food nights. Daytime events include films, art and craft classes, cookery classes and local visits. In addition, we offer many sports activities, such as football, badminton, windsurfing, cycling and horse riding. We can also arrange volunteer work to help you feel part of the local community. 17
