1 Johnson County Community College Contact for Elementary: Gina Sanders Transfer Program to the University of Phone: (816) Missouri Kansas City School of Education Contact for Middle, Secondary & K-12: Brad Martens Catalog Phone: (816) Home Page: The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the A.A. degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The elective hours within the A.A. allows students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 64 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses. The Elementary Education program is for those who want to be certified to teach or work with children from grades 1-6. The Middle Education program is for those who want to be certified to teach or work with children from grades 5-9 in the following subject areas: * Language Arts * Mathematics * Science * Social Studies The Secondary Education program is for those who want to be certified to teach or work with children from grades 9-12 in the following subject areas: * Biology * Chemistry * Earth Science * English * Mathematics * Physics * Social Science The K-12 Education program is for those who want to be certified to teach or work with children from Kindergarten to 12th grade in the following subject areas: * Art * French * German * Spanish All the Bachelor of Arts in Education degree programs place student teachers in one of our nine partner school districts and emphasis is on teaching within urban or diverse settings. Students should apply to UMKC well in advance of the semester they hope to start. Apply at Students must have an overall GPA of 2.0 to be admitted to UMKC as a pre-education student. However, GPA requirements for program admission and certification are higher (see for more information). Students who are applying directly to the TE Professional Program should have an overall 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale in all coursework, as well as in content area coursework. Additional application materials are required to be directly admitted to the TE Professional Program. Additional information regarding GPA requirements as well as individual GPA evaluations can be obtained by contacting the program advisor(s) at the top of this guide. The School of Education will calculate the highest grade of a course in the GPA if it is repeated before beginning at UMKC. Courses use toward certification must receive a letter grade - pass/fail is not accepted. Completion of all education and content area courses with grades of C or better is required. Students considering transferring to the UMKC School of Education should submit unofficial transcripts for evaluation. Complete instructions can be found at: Once completed, you will be contacted to arrange an advising session to review your transcripts and create a time line to graduation. ***NOTE*** Completing an Associate of Arts degree (Liberal Arts) at JCCC will satisfy all lower level general education requirements at UMKC. It is the STUDENT S RESPONSIBILITY to check for updates to all transfer information. This transfer guide is provided as a service and is updated at least annually. Degree requirements at the four-year universities are subject to change by those institutions. Updated 7/15
