1 Mixed Methods Research COURSE INSTRUCTOR Kamau Oginga Siwatu, Ph.D. College of Education, Room 371 Phone: (806) ext COURSE INFORMATION EPSY 6349 (3 Credit Hours) Tentatively scheduled for Spring 2008 COURSE DESCRIPTION An introduction to the emerging field of mixed methods research, including research designs, strategies for data collection, analysis, and integration, and its applications across disciplines. COURSE PURPOSE The purpose of this course is threefold. First, this course will provide doctoral students with an introduction to the emerging field of mixed methods research (MMR), while examining the types of research problems that can be answered by mixing quantitative and qualitative methods of inquiry. Second, this course will provide students with an introduction to the four major types of MMR designs, data collection strategies, and the procedures for analyzing and integrating quantitative and qualitative data. Third, this course will examine the important issues and future directions of MMR and its application across disciplines. Throughout the course special attention will be given to the process of developing a MMR proposal and producing publishable mixed methods studies. COURSE PREREQUISITES Prior to enrolling in this course, students need to have had an introduction to research methods (EPSY 5379 or EPSY 5385, or the equivalent), intermediate statistics (EPSY 5381 or the equivalent), and qualitative data analysis (EPSY 6304 or the equivalent). These course prerequisites are designed to ensure that students registered for the course have the required minimum background for successful study of the course content. REQUIRED TEXTBOOKS Creswell, J., & Plano-Clark, V. (2007). Designing and conducting mixed methods research. Thousand Oaks, Creswell, J. (2003).
