2 About Johnson County Community College Located in Overland Park, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area) 21,033 credit students fall degree and certificate programs 1,014 full time faculty and staff Member of League for Innovation

3 About College Johnson County Community College 3,010 students 300 instructors 26 partner high schools Service area: one county and a portion of neighboring county Established in the late 1980 s Accredited by NACEP in 2006

4 Introductions Cindy Crabtree, Counselor at DeSoto High School 23 years experience as a high school counselor DHS hosts grades 9-12 with a graduation rate of 93 percent 680 students with senior class of College Now students taking 403 credit hours fall 2011 Three possible National Merit Scholars in this senior class Loralee Stevens, Assistant Dean at JCCC 20 years experience in higher education Positions in housing, admissions, instruction Served as an adjunct instructor for ten years Worked with the College Now program since 2003

6 How JCCC and the role of the high school counselor Each role within the program has a designated set of guidelines and responsibilities These roles include: Instructor, Building Representative (designated counselor), School Administrator (principal), Liaisons (one per discipline) and The College (all of the details can be found on our website Today we will focus on the role of the building representative

7 High School Building Representative What we expect from them How we nurture the relationship Best practices for counselors The benefits to our CEP of a close affiliation with our counselors

8 Building Rep guidelines In general, serve as the point of contact for their secondary school site. Compile a fall, spring, and year-long course schedule at the beginning of each academic year. Receive and distribute class schedules to classes. Inform students of the maximum number of college credits they may earn through the CN program. (24 per the Kansas Board of Regents) Be the official person at the secondary school site to answer questions that students and parents may have about the program. Maintain an inventory of basic JCCC forms. Receive, distribute, collect, and return textbook order forms. Receive, distribute, collect, and return final grade rosters. Notify JCCC (Office of Community Outreach for Credit Instruction) of any problems or questions. Attend meetings, as needed, to discuss issues, ideas, and suggestions about the CN program. Distribute various mailings (instructor letters, JCCC publications, directories, etc.). Share information about the Metcalf Bank Scholarship opportunity.

9 Building rep events/inclusion Fall and spring Building Representative Breakfast on campus The fall breakfast is a working meeting with in-depth discussion of program goals, Q & A, etc. Those on campus who work closely with the program are invited. Including: Testing Services Bookstore Admissions Registrar Dean of Students The spring breakfast is a thank you breakfast with small gifts and a light agenda. The academic deans and faculty liaisons are invited to the spring breakfast The building representatives are included on the professional development planning committee Break-out sessions for building reps are included in the large instructor professional development events. They typically meet with the Director of Admissions

10 Building rep inclusion (cont.) All instructor mailings such as the newsletter and our campus feature magazine are also mailed to our building representative Building representatives are invited to all meetings and professional development events for instructors There is a scholarship for students who participate in College Now and Career Pathways Counselors receive a $500 payment for their efforts above and beyond their day job for the College Now program Counselors are eligible for other opportunities on our campus based on their affiliation with the College Now program The counselors as a group serve as an advisory board to the program. Their input is sought regularly on program-wide topics

11 Best practices Cindy Crabtree will share several of her best practices for high school counselors. Direction for enrollment processes to students (students enroll themselves on-line once all requirements are met) Classroom presentations to all eligible classes Presentations detail: Applying for admission, ACT/testing requirements, course information, deadlines Inform parents Remind them of the of JCCC information sessions Invite a JCCC representative to Back to School Night Add information to school counseling website/wildcat Growl Maintain an open door policy

12 Benefits of a strong relationship with a designated high school counselor Your program has an informed manageable group of professionals representing in the high schools By getting the group together regularly they can share best practices If you need to know about changing policy/trends/issues with other institutions, they will keep you informed Students have a consistent contact person Others in the building have one go-to person for questions Your counselors understand the meaning of NACEP and the reason behind the policies The impact study had 100 percent response from this group
