1 2 nd Grade Language Arts Curriuclum Saxon Phonics Phonics: A new skill is introduced daily. Review of previous skills occurs daily as well. Students then complete a worksheet together in class and a homework assignment which mirrors the daily worksheet is reviewed. An assessment of student knowledge is given following every fifth lesson. Students will: participate in daily phonemic awareness skill building activities learn a new letter, letter cluster, or spelling concept every day participate in daily reviews of previously taught concepts to ensure sufficient exposure to, and mastery of, each concept begin blending sounds to read and unblending sounds to spell after learning two letters learn to spell by applying spelling rules rather than by relying only on memorization learn common suffixes and selected prefixes never be asked to read or write sounds that have not been taught practice decoding by reading controlled text (decodable readers)
2 develop fluency by reading text (fluency readers) written with highfrequency words receive explicit handwriting instruction (print) be assessed regularly to monitor progress in phonics and spelling participate in games and activities that motivate, reinforce, and remediate Specific skills include: Print Awareness: Concepts About Print Capitalization Punctuation Phonemic Awareness Decoding: Consonants Alphabetic Recognition Initial Consonants Medial and Final Consonants Twin Consonants Consonant Blends Sounds of s Consonant Digraphs Consonant Trigraphs Sounds of Hard and Soft c and g Silent Consonants Vowels Short Vowels Long Vowels Silent Vowels

A pre-test is given each Monday. Review of the spelling words occurs throughout the week and a post test is given each Friday. Students are also required to write dictated sentences. Proper punctuation is required as well as correct spelling. Letter/Sound Correspondences Consonants Short Vowels
