1 THREE VILLAGE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
2 INTRODUCTION: THREE VILLAGE CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT COMMUNITY SWIM PROGRAM INFORMATION The TVCSD Swim Program follows the American Red Cross (ARC) Progressive Swimming Course format. This program has been revised. Please take note of the following changes: 1. Level VII and VIII have been dropped. 2. The program is now I through VI. 3. Children in the old Level I through V should continue as before, as the required skills are similar. 4. Level VI has 3 sub-parts. They are: Lifeguard Readiness Personal water safety Fitness Swimmer Stroke instruction and improvement are included in each of these new levels, with additional emphasis on fitness, personal safety or lifeguard readiness. The complete list of required skills is listed later in this bulletin. We understand these changes will cause some confusion initially, but please be assured the swimming pool staff will make every effort to make this transition as simple as possible. A progress report is given to all children at the end of each session. Please note: ARC cards are available for all programs. There is a fee of $1.00 per card for Level cards (you are not required to purchase these cards), and $5.00 for WSI and LG cards. GENERAL INFORMATION: Each swimming session consists of the following: ability grouping to enhance instruction; Safety Day instruction concerning safety in, on, and around the water; visitation days 2 scheduled dates when everyone is invited to watch the lesson; testing of skills and techniques that have been taught, and issuing of appropriate certificates. SPECIFIC INFORMATION: To insure the health, safety and convenience of all, the following policies have been established: Four and five-year-old class: (3-6 students per instructor) Must be four by first class date (BIRTH CERTIFICATE IS REQUIRED AT REGISTRATION). 2
3 Children must demonstrate a willingness and readiness for group swimming instruction to remain in the program. Parents may remain in the pool area during every lesson. They must, however, remain on the bleachers behind the chain. Siblings must also remain seated with the parent. Strollers are not permitted in lower level/pool area. All strollers must remain in main lobby. Parents may assist children in the locker rooms at the beginning and end of each class every day. All other Level Swim Classes: (6-10 students per instructor) ALL PARENTS MUST LEAVE THE POOL AREA DURING SWIMMING LESSONS. All are welcome to watch the entire lesson on visitation dates. Only appropriate parent may assist in locker rooms. Males are not permitted in female locker rooms; females are not permitted in male locker rooms. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Swim Program is progressive in nature. Each class session is important; therefore, every effort should be made to have your child attend every class. THE FIRST CLASS IS VERY IMPORTANT. Children who miss this class tend to have difficulty adjusting. NO MAKE-UP LESSONS WILL BE SCHEDULED. Refunds are permitted for medical reasons only. No other refunds will be given. A doctor s note is required for refund. Program cancellations due to inclement weather will be announced on radio stations WALK and WBLI. Also, our district website should have district closing information. The address is Lockers are available; however, valuables should be left at home. All jewelry must be removed before each class (jewelry should also be left at home). Please remind all children of the importance of using the toilet (located in the rear of each locker room) before entering the pool. If your child has special needs or a disability please notify the pool supervisor so that adjustments can be made in the program to insure your child s success in the program. Goggles that cover the eyes only are permitted. Masks that cover the nose or mouth are not permitted. The use of nose clips, although discouraged, is permitted. Proper bathing attire only; no cut-offs. All children with long hair should secure it in a ponytail or with a barrette, etc., so that it will not interfere with their swimming ability. NO RUNNING AT ANY TIME. This includes the pool area, locker rooms, stairs and parking lot. 3
4 Children should report any accidents to the instructor. Children should be instructed to wait for their rides on the sidewalk in front of the gymnasium entrance. All drivers must observe the one-way signs when entering the school parking lot. Always be on the alert for a child who may dart out from between parked cars. Please pick up children promptly at the end of each lesson. DROP OFF AND PICK-UP AT CURBSIDE IS PERMITTED. TO ALLOW FLOW OF TRAFFIC TO CONTINUE, DO NOT STOP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARKING LOT TO DROP OFF OR PICK UP CHILDREN: THIS IS DANGEROUS. ALSO, DO NOT WAIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARKING LOT FOR CHILDREN AT THE END OF A LESSON. PLEASE PULL YOUR VEHICLE INTO A PARKING SPACE. On visitation days, please feel free to discuss your child s progress with the instructor. No food or glass containers are permitted in the pool area at any time. NO SMOKING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS. (NYS Law). SWIMMING STAFF: The staff of the Community Swim Program is committed to provide quality swimming instruction for your child. All of our staff are certified by the ARC as Water Safety Instructors; many are four-year college graduates holding NYS teaching certificates and are, in fact, also employed as full-time teachers. We strive to provide quality, caring instruction by a certified staff at a reasonable price in a non-threatening, safe environment. A certified lifeguard and adult supervisor are on duty at all times. 4
