4 Mississippi Alternate Path to Quality Teachers 1. Undergraduate bachelor s degree (non-education) from a nationally/regionally accredited Individuals who have been graduated from college 7 years or more must have a minimum of a 2.0 overall GPA. Individuals who have been graduated from college for less than 7 years must have a minimum of a 2.5 overall GPA or a 2.75 GPA in major. 2. Passing Scores on Praxis I 3. Passing Score on Praxis II, Specialty Area Test in area of endorsement* A score that is within one standard error of measurement of the passing score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, in area of endorsement* 4. Applicants for the Teach Mississippi Training Institute must meet the requirements in 1, 2 and 3 above. Teach Mississippi Training Institute A two or three week session that introduces new teachers to the profession by providing training and hands-on field experiences. Training topics will include, but not be limited to, the following: Effective Teaching Strategies State Curriculum Frameworks Planning and Instruction Survival Skills The Real Classroom (Successful completion of the requirements in 1-4 above qualifies applicant for a One-Year Alternate Route License. Applicant must present documentation to the Office of Educator Licensure of employment by a local school district to be issued a One-Year Alternate Route License.) 5. During the first year of employment, teacher must complete the following: (a) New Teacher Practicums weekend sessions Fall & Spring that focus on: (i) Classroom Management (ii) Peer Coaching (iii) School Law (iv) Data analysis and using test results to improve instruction (v) Other topics as needed (b) New Teacher Training Modules (interactive video training); (c) Local district evaluation; (d) Local school district should provide an intensive induction program and provide a mentor for new teacher. (Individuals who have a passing score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, and successfully complete all of the requirements in 1-5, qualify for a Standard Five-Year License. Individuals who have a score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, that is within one standard error of measurement and have successfully completed all requirements in 1-5 above qualify for renewal of the Special One-Year Alternate Route License) (Continued on the following page)

Teachers who have not achieved a passing score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, after the first year of teaching must: (a) retake the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, during the second year they hold a Special One-Year Alternate Route License; (b) continue work on an Instructional Portfolio during the second year of teaching; (c) complete additional content specific college coursework in area of weakness. (Teachers who pass the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, at the end of the second year will be issued a Standard Five-Year License. Individuals who have not passed the Praxis II and have successfully completed all requirements in 1-6 above qualify for renewal of the Special One-Year Alternate Route License) 7. Teachers who have not passed the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, at the end of the second year of employment must: (a) retake the Praxis II test during the third year they hold the Special One-Year Alternate Route License; (b) continue to work on an Instructional Portfolio. Classroom videos must accompany the written portfolio; (c) complete additional content specific college coursework in area of weakness; (d) local district should conduct an evaluation of teacher. (Teachers who pass the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, at the end of the third year will be issued a Standard Five-Year License.) A teacher who has not achieved a passing score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test, by the end of the third year of teaching, but has a score that is within one standard error of measurement of the passing score, shall submit his/her Instructional Portfolio to the State Board of Education. The Board will have the portfolio evaluated by an external team. If the portfolio is recommended for approval by the external team, the teacher may be issued a Standard Five-Year License. *For the school year only, individuals will be exempt from holding a passing score on the Praxis II, Specialty Area Test. Individuals who successfully complete the Teach Mississippi Training Institute and obtain employment must obtain the required score during the first year of employment. NOTE: An Alternate Route License may not be obtained in the following areas: Administrator, Audiologist, Elementary K-4 and 4-8, Emotional Disability, Guidance Counselor, School Psychologist, Severe Disability,, Speech/Language Clinician, Library/Media, Special Education K-8, Child Development, or Birth/Kindergarten NOTE: A One Year Mississippi Alternate Path to Quality Teaching License may be obtained in the following areas: Art Education Marketing Mathematics Biology Business Education Music Education Physical Education Chemistry Physics English Social Studies French Spanish German Special Education (7-12 only) Home Economics Speech Communications Technology Education

6 TEACH MISSISSIPPI INSTITUTE ALTERNATE ROUTE (Beginning January 1, 2003 for grades 7-12) 1. At least a bachelor s degree from a nationally/regionally accredited institution of higher learning 2. Passing scores on the Praxis I (PPST) 3. Passing scores on Praxis II Specialty Area Test in area of endorsement* 4. Applicants for the Teach Mississippi Institute(TMI) must meet the requirements of 1, 2, and 3 above. The Teach Mississippi Institute is an eight(8) week, nine(9) semester hour summer program which shall include, but is not limited to, the following: Instruction in education Effective teaching strategies Classroom management State curriculum requirements Planning and instruction Instructional methods and pedagogy Using test results to improve instruction One(1) semester, three-hour supervised internship to be completed while the teacher is employed as a full-time teacher intern in a local school district (Successful completion of the requirements 1-4 above qualifies applicant for a One Year Nontraditional Teaching Route License. Applicants must submit a completed application packet and sealed transcripts to the Office of Educator License. ) 5. The teacher under this nontraditional route shall successfully complete, at a minimum, a one-year beginning teacher mentoring and induction program administered by the employing school district. 6. Upon successful completion of the TMI and the internship license period, applicants for a Standard License Nontraditional Route shall submit to the Office of Educator Licensure a completed application packet and transcript showing successful completion of the twelve(12) semester hours required in the internship program, and the employing school district shall submit a recommendation for standard licensure. If the school district recommends licensure, the applicant shall be issued a Standard License-Nontraditional Route which shall be valid for a five-year period and be renewable *NOTE: A Teach Mississippi Institute Alternate Route License may be obtained in the following areas: Mathematics Biology Business Education Chemistry Physics English Spanish Social Studies Special Education (7-12 only) German Speech Communications Home Economics Marketing French Technology Education
