Click here to better understand your style Expressive Amiable Driver Analytical Working Styles Understanding Your Working Style Understanding Your Working Style Your Working Style describes how you primarily approach and deal with people and situations at work. Many people will say their Working Style is similar to the way they behave outside their work. These style assessment measures two important aspects of a person s behaviour: 1. How emotionally expressive they are. 2. The degree to which they assert themselves. 1. Emotional expression The degree to which you show or hold back your emotions helps determine your style. In particular, emotions are expressed in four ways: Verbal expression What type of language do you use? Are your discussions filled with colourful metaphors and larger-than-life phrases, or do you tend to say things in an understated way? The types of words that you use and the way in which you use them is a direct reflection of your working style. Vocal expression

2 Are you a fast talker or do you go at a slow and easy pace? Is there a lot of intensity and excitement in your voice, or do you usually sound calm and relaxed? The tone you use communicates as much about your working style as the words themselves. Body language Do you talk with your hands or hold them by your side when speaking? Do you walk at a brisk pace or do prefer a leisurely stroll? Your body movement tells a story about which working style is the most natural to you. Environment Do you have a neat and tidy office with charts and graphs or do you prefer posters and motivational sayings plastered on your walls? Your office environment is a clue to the type of working style that you have. 2. Assertiveness Assertiveness relates to how much or how little you try to influence and control the actions and opinions of those around you. If your working style reflects a high degree of assertiveness, others probably see you as forceful and direct. A lower degree usually signifies being more reserved and easygoing. The degree to which you show or hold back your emotions helps determine your style. In particular, emotions are expressed in four ways: One style is not better than another Don t make the mistake of thinking that one style is better or more desirable than another. Everyone expresses himself or herself differently. Working Styles will help you better understand and appreciate these differences and provide you tips on how to read the situations and needs of the people with whom you work. With this insight, you can adapt strategies and adjust your behaviour in small ways that will significantly improve your working relationships, communication, and effectiveness.

3 Working Styles Style Map A Map of the Four Working Styles Expressive, Amiable, Driver and Analytical Characteristic Behaviour: Actions that people can see or hear Emotional Expression: Degree of emotion expressed in behaviour Assertiveness: Degree of forcefulness expressed in behaviour People or Task: Preferred orientation Pace: Relative rate of action EXPRESSIVE Expressive, Impressive, Persuasive Optimistic Ambitious Creative; ideas flow Needs approval and compliments Generalises Friendly, outgoing Opinionated, excitable Fast decisions Enthusiastic, shows confidence Wide range facial expressions AMIABLE Easy Going, Steady, Good Neighbour Needs people Good listener, patient, respectful Status quo, dislikes change No risks, no pressure Counsellor, helps others Questioning Insecure, needs reassurance Supportive, co-operative No conflict Friendly facial expressions DRIVER Dominant, Demander, Commander Goal and results oriented Impatient, risk takers Taskoriented, high achiever Workaholic Decisive, intense Opinionated, stubborn, blunt Practical Tough, firm in relationships Controloriented Competitive, loves challenges Makes direct eye contact ANALYTICAL Thinker, Perfectionist, Conservative Planner, organiser Details, technicalities Slow decisions Must be right Business-like, serious Precise, critical, logical Problem solver Persistent Follows procedures Focus on facts more than feelings Shows little facial expression

4 Working Styles Style Synopsis Analyticals General Characteristics: Using their logic, and diagnostic skills, Analyticals take a systematically well thought-out approach to everything they do. Their "Let s do it right the first time no matter what it takes" creed exemplifies their commitment to exceedingly high standards. In their quest for perfection, they can be very hard on themselves and equally hard on others. The cautious Analyticals gather the facts, ask questions, and take ample time to analyse all the significant possibilities before making a decision. To other styles, this prolonged decisionmaking process may be seen as "analysis paralysis." The Analyticals are the quietest and most critical of all the styles. They have a minimal interest in social interaction and are often seen by others as cool and detached. Their stoic, cautious nature belies their sensitivity to criticism and their desire to be a part of a group. Individuals with the Analytical style are found in every profession. Many will choose careers in accounting, engineering, information technology, law, and science where they can use their investigative, research, and mathematical abilities. Analyticals' most effective environment: Analyticals seek a predictable environment with set rules and procedures. It is important that they know exactly what is expected of them. Settings that give them freedom to work alone with limited interruptions and allow time for concentration and preparation are important. Analyticals' least effective environment: An organisation that is in constant change, with an "adapt as you go attitude" will be stressful for the Analytical style as will working with a group of playful colleagues who thrive on small talk and lots of personal interaction. How to effectively manage an Analytical: Analyticals appreciate a straightforward, direct, and business-like approach. Because of their deliberate, thorough pace, Analyticals may want more time than a decision allows or project demands. Many businesses today require quick decisions, and accelerated turn-around time; extended deadlines are not an option. Managers need to help Analyticals with their indecisiveness and time management. By scheduling intermittent progress updates with their Analytical associates to address their questions and concerns, managers will improve the certainty of meeting objectives. Praise the Analytical when he/she has achieved the desired results on time. Don t be misled by their minimum concern for relationships. Analyticals are sensitive and need personal attention and appreciation but it is important to be sincere and specific when complimenting them on their achievements. Under stress, Analyticals may become depressed, defensive and withdraw.

5 How to be effectively managed by an Analytical: Analyticals are irritated by clutter and disorganisation. Avoid surprises and do what you say you will do. Although Analyticals may want increased time to make their decisions, they have no patience with people who are late for work or meetings. They show their head not their heart and are uncomfortable with emotional outbursts. Synchronise your style to theirs by down-playing your feelings, and respecting their need for privacy.
