2 About this course Sports Coaching and Development offers you the opportunity to be at the forefront of the industry. With a focus on improving employability, you will study all aspects of sports coaching and sports development gaining applied skills that are relevant to the workplace. If you are not already in employment within the sector, work placement opportunities will ensure that you have access to considerable time coaching and undertaking development work. Flexible pathways exist to study full-time or part-time over one or two years. More than just a course! The sport and leisure industry remains one of the UK s key growth areas with a broad range of careers in the field of sport, physical activity and health. Sports Coaching and Development offers you the opportunity to be at the forefront of the sports profession, leading to opportunities to gain meaningful employment in the sports industry or towards developing your own sports related business. Close links with employers ensure that we boast an excellent network of contacts across many different sectors both locally and abroad. With a focus on improving employability, students will study all aspects of sports coaching and sports development providing applied skills that are relevant to the workplace. You will spend a considerable time coaching and undertaking development work. 3 Length of study There are a number of pathways than can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis to meet your particular needs. You can also start your programme in September or February. Full Time: 120 credits are completed in one year Part-Time: 120 credits are completed in two years On a part-time course, attendance is over one day per week. Depending on demand, there may be the possibility of completing part-time HNC courses in the evening. You will need to discuss this further with a member of staff during your interview. For a full-time course, you will be expected to attend College over 2/3 days per week. On all pathways, significant additional study will be required outside College hours to be successful on this programme. What will I study? HNC (Full-time 1 year) Applied Sports Coaching The Evolution of Sports Development The Sport & Leisure Industry Training and Fitness for Sport and Exercise Employability Skills Skills Acquisition in Sport Analysis of Sports Performance Sport and Exercise Rehabilitation HNC (Part-time 2 years) You will complete the same units as the HNC Full-time course but over 2 years.

4 What skills will I develop? The course has been designed to enable you to develop the following skills during the programme of study: analysing, synthesising and summarising information critically the ability to read and use appropriate literature with a full and critical understanding the ability to think independently and solve problems the ability to take responsibility for your own learning and recognise your own learning style obtaining and integrating several lines of subject-specific evidence to formulate and test hypotheses recognising the moral and ethical issues of enquiry and experimentation and appreciating the need for ethical standards and professional codes of conduct designing, planning, conducting and reporting on investigations undertaking laboratory and/or field investigations in a responsible, safe and ethical manner the capacity to give a clear and accurate account of a subject, marshal arguments in a mature way and engage in debate and dialogue both with specialists and non-specialists. How will I be assessed? Assessment methods include: Case Studies Reports and written assignments Oral presentations Practical Assessments Individual project work Data analysis Portfolios of evidence

5 Entry Requirements You will need to be 18 years of age on or before 31st August of the academic year that the programme commences to complete the programme. Admission to the programme in 2017/18 would normally be on the basis of you possessing attainment from a previous course of study, and/or relevant experience, which may be ascertained by the following:- A minimum of 48 UCAS points which may be gained from the following qualifications or combinations of qualifications: GCE A Level or AS level passes 90 Credit Diploma, Diploma or Extended Diploma A Diploma or equivalent such as NVQ, GNVQ, International Baccalaureate, Scottish Certificate of Education An Access to HE Course Any other relevant international qualifications You can find out how many points your qualifications are awarded by using the UCAS Tariff look-up tables on the UCAS website. In addition, GCSE Maths and English Language (Grade C or above), or equivalent is required. We also welcome students with relevant work experience subject to a successful interview. All learners who are non-native English speakers or who have not studied the final two years of school in English, will need to demonstrate capability in English (IELTS 5.5, with a minimum of 5.0 being awarded on individual sections). What can I do after this course? Progression to the Pearson BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Sport (Coaching and Development) for one further year of study, or to undergraduate study in a related sport programme, or directly to employment in the sector. 7 Additional information including fees The tuition fees for the HNC are as follows: HNC 1 year Full-Time: 5500 HNC 2 years Part-Time: 2750 per year Key points regarding Tuition Fees: If you never earn more than 21,000 per year, you never pay anything back. If you stop earning more than 21,000 at any time your payment stops. If you wish, you can repay your loan in full at any time with no penalties added. Your employer can pay part of the fees, with you paying the rest through a loan. If you don t pay off the loan within 30 years, the Government will write off the outstanding amount.
