1 Introduction This lab should take approximately 1 hour to complete and it is due before you leave today. Task 1: Setting up VMware for Installation Task 2: Installing an Ubuntu Server Task 3: Hardware Naming in Linux Questions Task 1: Setting up VMware for the Installation 1. Before you start the install open the VMware Player Preferences as shown 2. Make sure it is configured exactly as shown below Created by Donna Warren 1/2/2012 Page 1

2 3. Linux Server Install 4. Click on Create a new virtual machine 5. Select I will install the operating system later if you are installing from a CD. Created by Donna Warren 1/2/2012 Page 2

3 6. Select the 32 bit version of Linux (Ubuntu if it is on the menu) and click Next 7. Enter the machine name (use your initials-linux) and select the location you want to store you virtual machine (highlight store as a single file) and then click Next 8. Select the defaults by clicking Next 9. If you are using a CD, click on the customize hardware button Created by Donna Warren 1/2/2012 Page 3

4 10. Highlight New CD and click on the advanced button 11. Check the box next to Legacy Emulation the click on OK 12. Click OK on the hardware page 13. Then click Finish Task 2: Installing an Ubuntu Server 1. When the VMware home page appears 2. Highlight your new virtual machine and click on Play Virtual Machine in the right hand pane. 5 1. The next screen you will see is "installation type," what you see will be dependent on whether you have an existing Windows installation or not. 2. I'm going to split this into three different sub-steps, to make it as simple as possible. 3. For those installing in a virtual machine or to hard disks without an OS you will see the following screen on the next page 3. Select the first option radio button and then click continue 4. As the installation starts to copy the required files to the hard disk, you will be presented with a screen to select your locale. 6 5. The next screen to appear will be keyboard layout, Select English and US and click on continue 6. You will now be greeted by the "who are you" screen, ready for you to fill out with your user details: 7. The computers name and username will automatically populate when you type your full name. 7 Make sure you select Require My Password to Login The installation information screens will now appear as Ubuntu continues the installation: 8. Once installation has finished, you will be presented with the following box: 9. Select "restart now" and when requested, remove your installation CD, then press enter to reboot. 10. 9 Task 3: Hardware Naming in Linux Questions 1. Open a terminal window and use the dmesg command. What general kind of information is displayed? 2. Filter the information using the command dmesg grep sda. What did Linux name your bootable partition? 3. If you were to add a new partition on the same drive, what would it be named? 4.
